Helen Beaumont, sorry I just have said. I know that Culture de Neige can mean artificial snow.
It is something to do with the history of the area I think?

Christopher, yes, it would appear to be. I think there are some Roman things going to be around Monetier, there was a thread on that forum you linked to earlier this week.

this year they have tried to introduce some of the history of neige, and of the valley, you'll find many new things around of interest.
I'm not gonna tell you too much you'll find out when you get here

Whats the damage then? It seems to have rained at lower altitude throughout the French Alps and the webcams suggested it did.

Raining hard to 2400 meters in the Serre Chevalier area but the snow line will drop to 1000 m tomorrow (but the rain, ahem I mean snow, will ease off).
If you've not booked your vacation I would hold off for the moment, a long dry cold spell in store next. Eet eez a deesaster... as my local ski resort manage says.

as someone just said, at least with the forecast cold they will be able to run the snowmaking for the resort runs and there will be plenty of snow higher up.

Still 2 and a half weeks to christmas though, even with a period of cold dry weather there is enough time. Sorry to hear its not going to be one of the best openngs. The one year I don't go at christmas. I have a group of friends who are staying in Chantermerle that week, some of them are begginers and really want them to have a cracking time. Have a sneaky feeling it might just snow big time for christmas.

Christopher, snowmaking on the nursery slopes up at Serre Ratier should mean they have a great time. The beginners won't need a huge area open for them. My fingers are crossed for Christmas too.

Helen Beaumont, Yeah I'm sure it'll be fine. So annoyed I'm unable to join them, but my job prevents me taking holiday over christmas.
I'm sure they will open it regardless of whether the snow. I would have thought it would have been a marketing catostrophe if they didn't open on time. Plus the snow looks good enough above and around Bachas and Serre Ratier.
And there is always this from snow forecast:
Winter weather warning for Western Europe issued 09:00 GMT Tuesday Dec 8th. Following a very mild autumn in Britain and the near continent much colder conditions will develop across most of Europe by the weekend. Next week should see significant snowfalls for the Alps and the Pyrenees as well as snow falling to lower elevations across large parts of mainland Europe.

Helen Beaumont, I would say that is conclusive, the snow line must be lower than 1500m. No big patches of brown and green there. If you can ski down to Monetier I wouldn't worry.

Luke, there's not a lot of difference in time (apart from the cost of the tunnel ) TBH, but if there is bad weather it might be best to use the Frejus tunnel. You can phone the information line on 00 33 4 92 24 44 44 to get up to date info on the conditions of both the Lauteret and Montgenvre

Currently here with a school trip. ESF reckon they will only have the upper Monetier section open for the whole week. Access via the Bachas, then the three upper lifts which serve 7 or 8 pistes. Piste conditions up there are good; very cold with light dustings today. But going to be pretty tedious for the week doing the same runs over and over again, and looking at the dry forecast, I personally wouldn't bother booking for Christmas week. I can understand why they're not opening the lower runs, but the upper bowl above Villeneuve??

snowhound, They should open up some limited areas such as above Chantemerle and Villeneuve and then use the lifts to return to the villages as is happening in Monetier.
Have they got the snow cannons going on the pistes down to Monetier?
I get the impression it is probably penny pinching or preserving the snow for christmas.
I wouldn't be very impressed if I was there as I assume you paid the full price for a weeks lift pass?

snow fall was pathetic not eve worth thinking about.

well from where i sit the cucumelle and the grand serre actually look quite nice!
the snow blowers have been blowing from half way up the luc alll day and are still blowing, the lower ones were blowing over night.
very cold, really hasn't warmed up down here at all.
planning a little ride at monetier tomorrow.

Cannons to Villeneuve and Monetier running pretty much continuously at the moment. Looking across from the top of the Yret lift, the upper Villeneuve bowl has had the basher treatment and the snow is great at altitude so really hacked off they're keeping it for next week's French invasion-most voices today on the pistes were English and I don't think they're that bothered about keeping us happy this week. Oh, and we have payed for a full area pass through the Tour Operator who are trying to get refunds but the lift company have not agreed to anything.
We're looking at going to Deux Alps or ADH for a couple of days. Doing my research now. Today was very cold out of the sun.

snowhound, they're not doing anything unusual. there is not enough snow and it is quite normal for them to open part and not all if the snow is lacking.
the french influx will be on the 26th not saturday although it will be busier.
As to how much you paid.
you paid through a tour agency, so you didn't pay a full price, infact you normally pay approx 40€ less, which would take you to the price of just monetier.
|
|
|
|
|
|
snowangel., depends on what price the tour agency gives the clients. A lot don't pass on the discount. Not SC lift company's fault of course in that case.
