whats the prob with the cannons?

Apparently they disconnected them when they did the work in the summer widening the Gentil, making it a Green now back into the village and they don't appear to have reconnected them again! Very French! It also means by keeping the resort "closed" they don't have to pay the lifties for the first week, as one of our liftie friends told us. Again very French!

Candice is in La Plagne skiing this week with Les Etoiles du Sport, they do it every year. Well she reported yesterday afternoon that the snow in La Plagne was GOOD!

rebeccay, They had better have that lift running by Saturday
I can't remember who it was but one of the villagers was saying in August that it was pointless that the tourist office wanted opening so early, it does make you wonder if SAP are playing politics again doesn't it.

Don't know if this is the best place to put this, but there doesn't seem to be any other La Plagne threads... I'm staying in Les Coches at the mo, so just some info re snow conditions in Les Coches/La Plagne... Unfortunatley no Montalbert as we can't actually get there!
Anyway, as expected, runs down to Les Coches aren't open, but the Lac Noir lift is running for getting up and down the mountain. Bijolin chair lift then running from the top of the Lac Noir lift up to the top of the mountain. The Mont Blanc piste is open down to the bottom of the Bijolin lift, so there is a bit of stuff you can do on the Les Coches side of the mountain. Had some teething problems on the lifts today, one of them (Salla I think) broke down a couple of times.
We got here yesterday and the snow canons down to the village have been constantly running since we arrived. It also snowed all day yesterday, although it was very light snow, so only a cm or two settled. Snow that was forecast for today didn't materialise we've had glorious sun all day! So anyway, there are some huge piles of snow just above the village. I haven't seen a single piste-basher anywhere tho, so they don't seem to have started spreading that snow around so that they can open the pistes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they might make a start overnight!?!
Over in La Plagne quite a few runs open - mostly blues. We've stuck mainly to the Belle Plagne/Plagne Bellecote side so far and the glacier. Some other people staying in our chalet said they got all the way down to Champagny today, so that side seems to be open too.
Snow conditions - high up where there is snow it is amazing!!!!!! We've had some fantastic runs the last couple of days around Belle Plagne, and down to Plagne Centre, the snow has been really powdery and smooth (although getting a bit more choppy this afternoon on some steeper slopes). the off-piste looks fantastic - very tempting!!! Snow canons are running all over the place.
So in short, where there is snow it's really good at the mo. Where there isn't they're obviously preparing to open, but I suspect reason they aren't opening more things yet is more to do with the number of people to man the lifts/piste bashers rather than the quantity of snow...

The number of runs open as reported on the website doesn't look too promising. Only 3 reds across the whole of La Plagne area.

No worries!
We've only come across the one red piste open so far. But as I say, what is open is in pretty good condition. I think there were more pistes open today than there were yesterday, so keeping my fingers crossed that tomorrow will be better again...

they've been going all day today but the stuff they are pumping out is really really fine, they don't seem to be making very big heaps. They'll need to produce day and night till Saturday I should think to get enough to spread around. The good thing though is that it is cold, i mean very cold, so at least the ground temperature should be cold enough to provide a decent base. Can't wait to see you Mouth,

Boredsurfing, Are they going to hurry up and get some snow on these runs?
I have never been to a resort when there was not enough snow.
Boxing day dosen't seem long off to hit La Plagne.

I have just returned from Champagny having spent the last 3 days skiing La Plagne and I would say the skiing conditions are very good for this early in the season. I would agree with Boredsurfing, about the snow cover being good above 1800 metres. A lot of the runs are not yet open, not due to lack of snow, but more likely due to lack of skiers to ski them. It was deserted yesterday. We have a couple of beginners staying in our apartment this week and they had the Champagny nursery slopes to themselves.
The best run I found open yesterday was Les Sources, the red run down from Roche de Mio towards Belle Plagne. It was powder nearly all the way, even on the steep bit that is usually a bit icy. A few runs were open on Monday that were closed on Sunday, I would imagine the vast majority will be open this weekend. All the runs on the Verdon Sud side of Grande Rochette to Champagny were closed but the snow cover on them looked excellent and I think they are saving some slopes for the busier Christmas and New Year weeks. The runs into Champagny village (1250 metres) were not open but the snow cannons were running so at least one run into the vilage will be available for the wekend.

hey everyone, it snowed during the night. Down here in Longefoy we've had about an inch fall and cover the roads. It's looking white again, don't know how much will have fallen up the road but I suspect more than what we've had!

Not Twinner, Mouth. We've been SkiSet for at least 3 years now. In fact there's a new logo this year so all the signs have been changed and we've even got new carrier bags!

Hmm, I don't know Chalet Balcon at all coolhandluke, is that definitely in Montalbert? And as for SkiSet I, II or III... I can only think of 2 shops, we have the main one in the main street, which is called Les Etoiles du Sport (it used to be a Twinner franchise, but changed over to SkiSet 3 years ago, and finally all the Twinner branding has gone), and then we have a smaller shop in the MMV Hotel called Les Sittelles at the top of the village which generally services the hotel guests, there's less choice of material up there. So coolhandluke, if you're in Montalbert, definitely come into the main shop in the village, there'll be loads of choice of skis in Jan. Hope to see you then.
