skied towards Flaine today with my eight year old. Snow best on on the Les Carroz side as on the way to Flaine the snow cannon snow was bumped up showing rocks places, mainly on the Dolomine run. Good sunny weather, I should have put more sun cream on! Snow forecast for tomorrow so should give a good top up

We got back on the 29th from Flaine and have had a damn fine time. We arrived out on 19th, and the conditions were just great for the next 6 days or so. Just one morning of high winds [could have gone on the drag lifts in the bowl but decided discretion, valour etc]. Bluebird every day.. Great, fab.
I have been really pleasantly surprised by the whole Grand Massif area. We managed to ski in all the sections, and had a great run down to Sixt on the Cascades run. I really enjoyed down in Morillon, and had a great steak for lunch in the D'Eclair [?] restaurant on the last day. Yumm. Can see it is a great place to go and learn to ski, and the Flaine area is ok - I think that from the mountain looking down onto the apt blocks was not so bad really. Enjoyed the Picasso etc etc. Your eye tends to get drawn to Mont Blanc and Point Percee, so not an issue.
We were in the P&V apts which are probably the best standard of P&V we've been in. We were a bit spoiled as a couple in a 5 person apt, but even at that it felt spacious. Only minor downer was the drinking water was a bit yergh/chemically for the first few days and there was not a lot of hot water, but that all got solved by midweek. I guess it is the early season probs. I think these apts have to have the best ski-room we've been in - personal boot warmers in each of the ski lockers, and a pod of rooms for about 10 apts or so, so no congestion or anything.
The euro/pound rate is a bit of a killer, and we did balk at some of the resto prices, but did eat well from the butcher's in Flaine Foret shops.
I think I liked it and would come back again.

Excellent news - Reading the above has made my hangover a lot easier to bear (is it bear or bare????)
Many thanks MarjMJ, we are also staying in the PV Apartments and it was down to me to choose the accommodation for the trip so sounds like I shouldn't get too much hassle.

I'll let Chris tell you what he's been upto today....as a teaser....he went, he got burnt, he came back and went again!!
Clear blue skies here today with a smattering of fresh snow in the Village and more on the slopes!!

Early start after a late night drinking too much.....
The slopes where beautiful in the morning, going over to Samoens. No queues, in fact no people at any lift until 11am. The new snow had made a big difference. It is staying cold so the snow will hold up well, for another sunny day forecast tomorrow. Got very busy in the afternoon as everyone realised the snow was good and got up the hill so spent the afternoon on the near the telecabin above Les carroz where the views looked just like the grand massif website.

|
|
|
|
Today was another sunny one, but much busier on the slopes as the locals came up from Geneva to get the newish snow. Snow holding up well with the cold temps. Stayed near Les Carroz today as the rest of pur chalet have found those the better slopes than going over to Flaine.

marcellus,
Just been on snow-forecst.com & it's looks like next week is going to be even colder, sorry pal!
Throw something 40% in one of those Lemsips, that should warm things up!
If you get a mo could you give the the best route from GVA to Les Carroz, can't be sure if the hirecar will have Sat Nav. We land at 09.40hrs next Sunday & was hoping to hit the slopes around lunchtime.
Cheers.

Back home in Newcastle
marcellus, Don't use those Lemsips all at once you got this morning as we left!
After a week of snow covered streets, England looks rather bare
Lucan, Should be plenty of snow for you when you get there. Going to be a quiet week in Grand Massif this week so the snow will not get too much ski ing on it. And yes it does go too quickly....

Lucan, From airport follow blue signs for FRANCE which will put you on the Autoroute through the border at Bardonex.... then follow signs for Chamonix/Mont Blanc Tunnel.
At 2nd Peage make sure you're in right hand lane and come off.
Follow road round to lights.
Turn right at lights (signposted Sallanches?)
After a mile or so take left hand Turn up mountain (signposted Les Carroz & Flaine?) and follow your nose for about 7 miles.
Chrisb Lemsips??? I thought they were sherbert dib dabs........... perhaps that's why I'm feeling GREAT!!

marcellus, sorry to hear you weren't feeling so good - have you recovered yet? I was nearly out over New Year but it didn't come off, but will be in Verchaix the beginning of Feb and again mid March. How's the snow holding up? Looking at the GFS forecasts there doesn't seem to be a lot of snow predicted over the next ten days or so (although of course that's subject to change!).

So that I could quench your thirst for knowledge, today I braved the man flu and went up to see what the snow was like....
We've got very high cloud, it's very cold (-2) at the chalet....the snow was nice but there were a lot of small pebbles on some of the slopes over at Samoens apart from that had an awesome couple of hours very few people around and certainly no queuing!!
Right back to being a chalet biatch!!

the things I have to do to quench your thirst for knowledge!!
I'm now off the Lemsips (or rather they ran out) and am on the potent french stuff called Fervex washed down with coffee and Porridge.
A quick stop at Zig Zags to borrow some skis (we've decided that my 12year old Saloman XScreams are getting past it and Katie has almost approved my purchase request)... todays skis were some Bandits...I was a bit surprised at the lenght 184s but when I questioned this Jack did ask me how long had I been selling skis and shrugged, so I assume they're ok...anyway off we set in the Telecabine and into the cloud which we soon past through.
At the top was a vision in Orange......I initially mistook him for a DUtchman but then realised it was danjunk,....we headed over to Samoens via the Gron Chair and the snow was good, ........Samoens is still affected by the pebbles but today we took the velarge run down which was quite pleasant although some pebbles!!
By this stage we all agreed the description of the weather today was; c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-cold so headed off for lunch and vin chauds as the snow started to fall......only a light dusting at the moment but more forecasted through the night, tomorrow and into Thursday morning.
Not sure when we'll next be able to report as aparently "I do have some work to do" ..................... so same time tomorrow then?

marcellus, I saw the weather forecast today has been saying it is frighteningly cold there. I hope you're battling on through, even without lemsips! Although I must say my hip flask is normally full of brandy which, when combined with a square or two of chocolate, provides just the pick-me-up required on the lifts!

Lucan, marcellus has no beds to make this week as they have an empty week before the next onslaught of clients, so he has time to ski, while I have to work, work, work in snow dusted Tyneside. Not that I am bitter and twisted after a great time last week. Today me and the other half were deciding on the top starter, main and dessert we ate last week, got a bit depressed so opened up the wine (after promising to have a dry week!)
Lucan, Have a great time when you get over there

marcellus, No surprise that we could not agree so here were the choices
Me - starter Beetroot soup, duck, rasberry marague (sorry can't spell that word)
Sam - Goats cheese, chicken in pastry (closely followed by sausage and lentil caserole), choc choissant pudding
Number one girl - cottage pie and eggs and bacon
Number two girl - pasta, potato and 12 bowls of cereal, missing Sasha

ok so todays weather report;
Last night sasha (the dog) decided a bag of Liquorice toffee looked good...........so the night was spent escorting said stupid f***ing mutt outside to be sick..... this continued throughout the day............ Bl***dt stupid hound is now up for adoption!!!
It is because of this that todays weather report is sub standard (and nothing to do with me being tied up doing TVA returns or in the pub since lunchtime)..
anyway back on topic...cold, but not as cold as yesterday!!
and chrisb, I'm, surprised

Todays report is brought to you despite the best attempts of Messrs Stella and Chilli at the Belle Piste last night!!
However I am better at keeping my food in that that stupid hound of Katies is at the moment......I mean a whole bag of sweets, wrappers, bag, 2 receipts...it's no wonder she's still under the weather....................
We set off at Lunchtime with Zigzag jack leading and me on a pair of 184 Fischer Cold heats....not my favourites I think I'm going out of the Bandit 170s tomorrow............anyway I digress......get to the point I hear you call at the back??
After you get through the inversion layer at about 1300m you're in brilliant sunshine and not as cold as earlier in the week.
The couple fo centimetres (if that) of snow has helped everywhere and over at Samoens it looks as though they've done a lot of snow moving as the issue with the pebbles has gone..
We had a great ski and an exceptional lunch............apologies to anyone who wanted to hire skis from zig zags he really did mean to open at 14:00 but thought no one would mind if it were 16:00!!
