I'm more interested in Scotland at the moment - not due in the dolomites for 25 ish days. Todays double digit temps up the mountain have given the snow pack a nasty beating already andmore mild weather is forecast before the weekend.

Dave Horsley, no sign of prolonged cold up north yet, just more of the rollercoaster.

wrongsideof30, the North side of the Pyrenees should see a decent amount of snow at the weekend, heaviest towards the western end. Starting on Friday afternoon/evening and into Saturday with perhaps some more lighter snow on Sunday into Monday. Snowline up and down a bit but the heaviest bit on Friday night looks like being snow above 1500m or so.
Unfortunately I have no idea of Pyreneean geography, so I can't really tell you if that's much good for Andorra.
Maybe metalhead132 or AlTom could chip in here ?

kitenski, thanks. Ok, on that basis, I wouldn't be getting my hopes up, looks a bit too far east and to the south of the main ridge.

Still looking good for a continuation of the alpine dumpage, the north and west again being favoured. Should be snowing by the small hours of Friday morning, initially below maybe 1800m or so then dropping to below 1500m by Saturday morning. Snow easing for a time on Saturday followed by a more intensive dump into Sunday and Monday. This will snow to progressively lower levels, should be down below 1000m by Monday.
Thereafter the trend looks like high pressure will take over and produce a more settled spell. A cold day on Tuesday but then major uncertainty as to where high pressure will position itself, fingers crossed.

boredsurfin, thanks, but I'm hoping brian will be able to nail it down to the nearest hour so I can decide how best to avoid needing snowchains tomorrow

rob@rar, should be fairly light overnight, then a beefier spell from about 8am or so. You could get 20cm -ish by the middle of the day.

brian, excellent, I'll be out of Les Arcs by 7am so hopefully no need for chains if there's only light snow.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Rob,
Are the winter tyres not sufficent on their own ?
|
|
|
|
|

Not in the rubbish hire car I have, especially when there was 30cm of unploughed snow on the uphill stretch of road from my garage. Normally this is cleared in the early hours, but as Les Arcs has not opened yet the road doesn't get cleared until later in the day. I've had to put chains on twice this week and I'm hoping to avoid using them for a third time.

lisach, 12z was a bit colder though. I don't think that (18z) would cut it for Scotland and would be a big let down for the English rampers. Same thing in January with the extra cold could be epic, mind you.
The alps have been doing fine out of good old fashioned zonality though, thanks to the absence of the Euro high letting low pressures get through to deliver the goods.

Incidentally, I've been looking ahead a bit trying to figure out what's coming next week, but in the short term it's looking like a *very* snowy weekend in the French and western Swiss alps. Sunday in particular has dump written all over it. Accumulations of up to a metre are distinctly possible in the Savoie, Haute Savoie and wester lower Valais between now and Monday if recent runs come off.

Fantastic. Let's hope freezing levels are low enough. For us at home, Sunday has FLOOD written all over it - deep low passing over central England, probably at around high tide Sunday, after some days of strong south westerlies. We rarely get atmospheric pressure on the south coast as low as is currently being forecast in the met office surface pressure charts.

So ..gong to Tignes on the 17th. Should I take my phat skis, or my rock skis ?
