Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

It depends on what type of lift and the direction of the wind--- If the wind is directly up or down a lift line it doesn't matter as much --- directly accross is worse. Force 7 is sometimes ok - force 8 they start closing some sometimes.

Anyone see the report from Glenshee on the Main BBC news just now?

They had a reporter there live and footage of sport on the mountain today - Glenshee looks gorgeous and they seem to have floodlit skiing this evening!

It'll be up on the Beeb website later this evening, look out for the report near the end of the main news.

Was at Glenshee today and it was a beautiful day. Very cold but clear blue skies and sunny all day. Arrived about 8.30am and got straight on the hill but unfortunately 2 friends I had taken up had to hire skis and they waited in a queue for 2 hours! There were a lot of queues on the hills but they got a bit better as the afternoon wore on and weren't the worst I have seen. The snow on the pistes was generally very good, lovely and soft but the few bits I ventured off piste were quite variable, hard crusty snow, rocks of ice and lovely powder all mixed in. Good end to the day as everyone melted away about 3.30pm and got a few laps of Caenlochan poma in where we skied straight down and back onto the lift Smile
There was a K2 stand today so I tried out a new pair of skis as well Smile

lynseyf, was at Glenshee myself. stopped in Blairgowie for bacon butties at the Early Bird Cafe, then reached the 'Shee just after 8 am. Saw the queues at the ticket and ski hire offices a bit later on - they were Shocked . Had a fantastic day in my lovely new Nordica fur lined boots. Tried off piste once, but I really did not like the crustiness so kept to the groomed stuff after that. I saw the K2 stand, but got distracted by the donut stand! We stayed on the Calybokie Poma run at the end of the day when everything else was shut. That's my fisrt time skiing in floodlights after dark! I gave up at about 5.15pm, only had to stop when I got too cold Sad . Left the 'Shee at about 5.45, thinking the traffic would have died down, but it still took 2 HOURS to get to Perth. Had to stop there for a pizza before driving all the way home.

I was thinking to myself - the one good thing about the huge queus for the lifts, and the general slowness of the lifts, is that the pistes remained fairly quiet all day Very Happy

Tim Sawyer, we drove:

I drove up to Cheltenham from Bristol (45 minutes or so) and went to Topsmoke's place, we bunged all our gear in Topsmoke's car and then headed up, it was the other way round on the way down lol.

Anyway, we headed up to Fort William on Friday evening, I can't remember the exact timings but we started off from Cheltenham at around 11.20 I guess and arrived in Fort Bill just before 8am, this was including taking an unintentional detour towards Stirling and then through The Trossachs to get back on track, that must have added 45 minutes to an hour that otherwise wouldn't have been included.

On the way down we left Cairngorm on Sunday just after 3PM and were back in Cheltenham just before 11 IIRC. Being Sunday evening there was som heavy traffic on the roads so I reckon we made pretty excellent time all in all.

I'd definitely do it again! Toofy Grin

The UK Meteo site is now updated with conditions for the next few days and it's looking pretty good for snowfall with Cairngorm getting some very cold weather and more snow. According to the reports on Winterhighland Cairngorm has got around 3 to 4 inches of fresh today (Monday) which in new money I calculate as being 7.5 to 10 cm. Whilst the weather on Sunday was, shall we say, not to everyone's taste it actually did a valuable service to the snowpack by wetting it and now with it refreezing it's going to be far more consolidated and less prone to melting easily in warm snaps - add to that todays fresh and then forecasted snow tomorrow too and later in the week and there's every chance of another epic weekend ahead!

Hopefully the other ski areas will fare as well with a solid consolidated base and a decent depth of fresh on top.

All I can say is if my family allowed me (which I doubt they will!) I'd be heading up there again this weekend and giving Cairngorm/Glenshee a visit! (I'll just have to console myself getting the teaching hours in at Gloucester dry slope Madeye-Smiley )

It's going to be very interesting following the pattern of this years weather because traditionally the big Scottish snowfalls don't come until later in the year (March/April) if this early snow keeps it up and then is followed by the more usual snowfalls Scotland is going to be pretty amazing this year - I'm looking forward to the Easter ski test up there already but I'll have to try to get up again before that if this caries on!

Are these the sorts of conditions I remember from the late 70s/early 80s or is my memory cheating!

Cairngorm

8 out of 10 lifts planned to open on Wednesday including the all important (for advanced riders) West Wall Poma!

We have excellent cover of snow on the upper, middle and lower slopes. There is still a good, complete, run from the top to the bottom, with a dusting of fresh snow on a hard base. The Ptarmigan Bowl, Ciste Fairway, Traverse, 105, Gunbarrel, Zig Zags, Home Road, Burnside, Fiacaill Traverse and M1 provided excellent pisted skiing. Other runs were also available, but unpisted.

Forecast for Wednesday: Heavy overnight snow will persist until midday, easing later. Wind N 30 to 40mph, easing to 20mph by noon. Temperature @ 900m -3C lowering to -4C.

Quad Chair/Warrens T bar will open if there is sufficient demand.

Conditions expected to improve again with the snow which is forecast. We are preparing to run all lifts on Friday and at the weekend.

The Lecht

13 out of 15 lifts were open Tuesday

All main runs are complete with good cover of groomed snow. Ample nursery areas. Tows will operate subject to demand. Light dusting of fresh snow.

All in all looking very good for the next few days and the weekend so anyone planning a trip should have great conditions under their skis, just make sure overhead conditions are reasonable too Very Happy

I'd say Cairngorm and Glenshee look particularly good but Glencoe sounds great too snowHead

hoping to go up one day this weekend if conditions stay good. I will probably just play with kids though and let hubby ski, it kind of seems pointless both buying lift passes when we will get only an hour or so each as we will have to take it in turns to watch kids. I might get a beginners pass though fopr half day then i can at least just have a go on the nursery slopes

How was it?

There are some nice looking photos on the Summit Park forum here but I hear Nevis is currently the centre with the least snow and most ice.

The weather is now looking very iffy for Friday, with another freeze/thaw and rain in prospect then back to cold and snow. However I believe it's 50/50 whether this is accurate or not given the ever changing forecasts.

so we could get away with sharing a pass??? i did think of that seeings you don't need a photo but wasn't sure. I think we will stick to glenshee as it is soo easy for us to get to and hubby has a lot of driving with work this week and next so don't want more travelling than necessary , and i think given our fitness etc. and the kids being little a half day will probably be adequate. I'd just like to potter down a couple of nursery slopes to see if i can still do it. if we want the afternoon pass can we get there a bit early and buy the pass as i don't want to be stuck in queses at the ticket office and miss all the best part of the day or will we not be able to get one until 12.30
