Pistes hard this morning, but softened up under the warm (January!!!) sun by the afternoon - great skiing.

Just back (well, today anyway). Reports of the winter being cancelled in europe are highly overstating the case - we were pleasantly surprised to say the least by the amount and quality of snow. We were in the espace killy for the same week two years ago and the snow cover this year is definitely better than it was two years ago. As has been pointed out though temperatures (and winds) have rocketed - Thursday was mostly fogbound, friday we caught first lift more or less up Grattalu and wished we hadn;t bothered, it was like a race piste - sheet ice! The high winds has scoured 90% of the loose snow off the pistes and the wind chill must have acted to freeze the surface as it was real boilerplate! I caught an inside edge and did two full 360 spins before I came to a halt! Conditions lower down (Carline, under Tichot) were better, softer snow allowing at least some purchase (bearing in mind I had an edge and wax on wednesday night!), and after lunch we managed a couple of tours around val claret when Paquis finally opened - by this time the upper pistes had also softened. Howevere, it was, as Stewart had said, raining in the village for most of the morning and it was drastically affecting snow quality. It was -1 when we left at 5am and the path to the hotel which had been cleared of snow had filled with water then frozen. Sorry to say but it doesn;t bode well for conditions further down the hill

Hello !
i'm from Montreal and going to Val d'Isere / Tignes next sunday. I'm thinking of bringing my skis to save on the location ($); but since they're pretty new (Rossignol Z9), are the conditions ok, or is there still small rocks than can damage the skis ?
thanks !

the pistes were gettng a little thin when I left: my last skiing day was friday. ON friday it was raingin as far up as aroun 2200m so the snow quality will have been further affected. before that point, we'd found that there were stones on piste going below around 1900, above that it was only really getting thin at busy junctions. I didn;t do any major damage to my own skis, but if you have to pay extra for ski carriage then I;d say renting in resort is the better option

stewart woodward, snow-forecast are just churning free output from a global forecast model. Good for medium range forecasting of likely developments/trends etc. but pretty poor for short term detail on the ground.
Go with experienced local forecasters every time ! (unless they're proven to be cack at it ).

Piste conditions in Tignes very good - good snow with blue skies and sunshine.
Conditions lower down in Val d'Isere not so good with quite a bit of ice.
Some pistes, while good at the moment, are quite thin and will need more snow quite soon
