There was about 10cm overnight at 1700 meters. My guess is for around 30-50cm by next Saturday at resort level, mixed with some rain.

Seeing as there are 99 quid holidays to be had for next weekend in l2a and adh I would think they would have to be worth a punt for a week's pre season.

there is the $99 dollar question, both resorts can open at village level with half a meter as the skiing is on grass at that level. A quiet l'Alpe d'Huez with skiing on the Pic Blanc down to 1800 would seem like a good bet, I might even go up there myself!

metalhead132, With the snow that's falling at the moment I will be very disappointed if they don't open down to the Cretes level. It's all quite skiable, and if we get another, say 15cms they'll have no excuse not to use the machines on it. Only thing stopping it now is vile snow and officially closed runs. They do tend to worry about wear on the snow if it's thin cover though. At any rate. I would expect to see Toura and/or Lac Noir open + down from 2,600 to 2,200 after today. However ... it may be a financial decision ....
You can see from the pic that it's raining hard here, and you can also see that the snowline is a bit lower than yesterday

I just booked a week in Hotel Le Cret at Le2Alpes and now I'm worried there's gonna be no snow!
I'm taking a first timer too and don't want him to be dissapointed, spoke to the resort today and they say "good skiing" on the Glacier but no snow down low -
So my question to all you Deux Alpes experts is: what's the Glacier Skiing like i.e. how many runs, how long and how technical (isn't it just all ice) - also how long does it take to get to the Glacier from my little Hotel Le Cret; oh and if anyone's stayed there before I'd appreciate any info on the accommodation.
Thanks in advance for your help.
First time skiing in France as usually go to Switzerland, Wengen - fingers crossed ...........

williams691, welcome to snowHeads I am sure that you will have a great time and you made a very sensible choice in view of the current situation generally. The forecasters are beginning to agree that the conditions are likely to improve before you go as well, so there is every chance of better conditions by the time you go.
When we went to Les 2 Alpes in November it was taking anything upwards from 45 mins to get to the glacier, but it varied enormously depending on the queues at the bottom and the time that you set off.

Cool - what about the variety on the Glacier itself, are there many runs and do you know how long they are etc, etc... Cheers

williams691, There are a fair number of runs, but there isn't a lot of variety on the glacier, it is one open area with several T bars. They are all blue and will be excellent for your learner friend.
There will definitely be more open than just the glacier though.

williams691, Looking at the forecast you should have lots of skiing above 2200m. If the temps drop then wrap up warm for the glacier.

williams691, (and everyone else) I haven't been up today, but it looks cloudy high. It snowed a fair bit yesterday, but has stopped for the moment. currently there isn't any snow in resort but it's possible but not actually open, to ski down to 2,100m which is the first intermediate level. REalistically, unless it gets very cold and they're able to run the cannons night and day then there won't be much if anything down here in 2 weeks time. The glacier is fine though, and we have a couple more runs available than we did at the Mondial in November. The wind has been nasty up there though. It's officially open to the mid station of the 8 man chair at 2,900 (or was yesterday), but in view of the weather being better today than tomorrow I think I'll change my plans and get myself up there with the camera (if it doesn't freeze the batteries again) today. Therefore, as it's now after 11 I should get a move on ..
NO-ONE SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT COMING HERE, EVEN IF WE DON'T HAVE A HELL OF A LOT MORE SNOW. there's plenty of fun skiing around, and a good bit of variety if you're adventurous enough.
williams691, Welcome to snowheads - we should all get together for a drink at least once when you're here. My mobile number is on my website!

We are counting on the Wednesday weather front but the local Meteo Chance forecasters in Grenoble seem pessimistic this will do much to improve our lot. It is quite warm now with that dreadful south wind again. Most of Sunday/Monday's snow will melt. I can't see a great deal below 1900 m on north slopes and very little below 2200 m on south facing slopes. I suspect the snowline on sun exposed slopes to rise to around 2500m today.
Meteo France is frequently wrong and the front does look quite active. I'm still thinking of at least another 30cm by the weekend.

davidof, well apart from the Föhn today, Meteoschweiz is forecasting lower temps from tomorrow through to Saturday (as far as the forecast goes), indeed dropping off sharply by Sat (4 deg at Zurich level) plus precipitation for most of the week. This is the best foreacst there's been for about 2 months

metalhead132, are you here?
OK - so I went up, and as it was very windy I didn't bother to ski on the glacier itself. Most of the ice patches have now gone though as the photo shows:
I started to ski down, and this time took the Serre Palas/Mura route which was really nice snow
I then moved onto the Jandri which was in very good condition indeed. I met up with Euan about half way down, and the snow was so much better that one could even let the skis run a bit without worrying about rocks! Euan, however was a wimp and went down in the Jandri Express from 2,600 while the brave Easiski continued down the Grand Nord which was in much better conditon than on Saturday with lots of tracks both down the right where I went on Saturday and down the centre where I went today.
The Cretes is now really ready to go as soon as there are enough peeps to make it worth the DAL's while
From there I took the Village chair down, which gives you a good view of the face (Belle Etoile)
and found that the Patron of the Bon Cannon just at the bottom of the Valentin was having a cheeky game of Petanque with his chef de Cuisine! He used to be a ski teacher and worked for many years in Val Thorens.
Now I had lots of fun - I skied 1,100m vertical without going up the glacier on blue, green and red slopes, so ALL IS NOT LOST!

Charlotte, tell them to get all the snow cannons on full blast on Weds and then again on Sat/Sun/Mon (you'll get wet on Friday if they leave them on...) as you could do with getting as much snow down before it gets warm again Tue/Wed next week... lasting for about a week or so unless things change a bit. Definite hopeful long range signs of improvement but not until almost Christmas week and it's too far off to be certain yet. Some signs of serious cold breaking through from then and it could be seriously cold... nastily cold, even. Greenland area recorded record low temps for start of December in the last day or so and that cold pool could break out if things pan out. On the other hand it may stay warm and bloody mild...

carled, At the moment the temp is too warm and the ground is too warm to use the cannons. Anything they made at night would melt during the day at village level. With a water shortage on this mountain, we have to be a little cautious in their use. If it gets cold they surely will run them as much as possible though.
Our main advantage is that nearly all the skiing is ABOVE the village level of 1650, so although it's ideal to be able to ski the whole terrain, the Jandri side from the top to the Cretes is still a very decent area to ski. (1468 vertical metres) Especially if they get the Grand Nord area up and running (can't see the top of the Bellcomber lift of course).

carled, well, at the moment that run (the Chemin des Demoiselles) is all road, so it isn't a consideration! It is a problem here, but think of it this way: good skiers can ski on easy runs, but moderate skiers or beginners can't ski on blacks, so having an upside down mountain means everyone can ski all the time! There is a move to create a blue run down at the other end of the resort, but it would mean fairly major earthworks, and they're holding out for widening the Chemin, but some of the landowners (27 in between the town and the Cretes) are holding out .... annoying really. Meanwhile \i continue to champion the use of the Belle Etoile chair as a very nice way to come down the last part of the mountain - civilised and no queues. Bus stop quite handy too! Also the Village chair, but you do have to walk a little bit to get back to the skiing. Of course the Champamé runs late to allow traversing back to the centre - ditto the Lutins lift in the middle ....
As a matter of interest, (to peeps who ski black), the Grande Pente is nearly all grass underneath, as is the Diable, so in thin snow cover they are the best routes down if you want to avoid the combe Valentin (doesn't everyone, late in the day?) Sapins, l'Y and Posettes have a lot of rocks under the snow.

Apart from easiski's helpful daily postings, what weather forecast is the most reliable for L2A?. I read one 2day which forecast 10 cm of snow 2day (down from 20ish yesterday) and another suggesting no snow 2day but 38cm 2morrow. Hopefully they are both right!!

simonmj66, I look at: Meteo France, Meteo consult, Metcheck, Snow-forecast.com, BBC Western Europe and also Lameteo. At the moment all but one is saying that the snow level in descending all day and it will snow heavily today and tonight. Tomorrow morning should be fair, and then a return to heavy rain/snow on friday. On Fri/Sat/Sun it looks as if the 0deg isotherm is bobbing up and down a bit, but is unlikely to be higher than 2,000-2,200m which means that where we already have snow we will have more. The ground on the face and at village level is quite warm at the moment, so any snow that settles is unlikely to last until the temps remain low for a while.
It's just turned from rain to snow here in the village, and the lower part of the face is beginning to look grey. Poor Paul S and Louise are here for lessons, and everything's closed due to 70+kph winds higher up. A real bummer. Hopefully, they'll now be working on the Cretes so that if it's very windy on Friday (looks like it might be) we should still be able to ski at lower altitudes.
All in all quite hopeful, but just a real bummer for Paul & Louise .....
