Temps are dropping, but it's been dry. Wolf Creek is open (they got a 2-3' storm last week). Others are calling out 8 Nov. Peaks are dusted, but it'll all be made snow for a while. Ski teams will start training at Copper next week, and it is scheduled to open to the public on the 8th, but right now it's just a beautiful autumn!

I'm checking the La Masse webcam pretty much every hour. In 3V from the 14th-20th of December and the lack of snow is starting to spook me! There's an archive on the webcam that shows a base of snow on the mountain from late October going back to 2021...! TBH I'm only anxious about it because I've organised the trip and chose the dates based on Baby FWNS being due in the new year.
Sorry if I've jinxed the whole northern alps with my hubris.

fallingwithnostyle, back in 2011 I was planning to bring my 20 yr old son out to La Plagne the week before Christmas.
At the start of December there was no snow on anywhere.
With little likelihood of skiing, I was going to suggest to him that there was not point in him coming along.
Then on December 5th it started to snow. And snow. And it just didn't stop. It turned into a superb season.
Have faith.

I'm semi kidding ( probably about 60:40) failing any snow I'm sure Gloucester Dry slope will be a suitable substitute

Yes typical Golden October / Kaiserwetter in the mountains. Pretty grey & misty around here. Very familiar from recent years. Mid November before a change is likely. Currently ideal mountain walking weather.

Yeti, Japan, opened today.
It is the first ski resort in Asia to open for the 2024-2025 season.
Snowfall in northern Japan is currently 1 week ahead of average.
Promising (very) early start for those headed to Japan.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Well I certainly preferred last years forecast for early Nov! Let’s hope it changes o er the next few days…

I don’t know why it puts that date (maybe when I saved the link?) but the one further up is this year and directly above is last year (from the previous years thread). Last year was one of the best Novembers in memory. Alas it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get going this season

Been snowing on and off in the Cascades since Sunday morning. More inbound for the inter-Mountain West Tuesday/Wednesday (Utah/Colorado), and the Coast Range in BC as well. Currently only Wolf Creek, CO is open.
Might get lucky and be able to dust off the rock skis for some bushwacking on Thursday depending on how things develop with potential for a half-meter to a meter of snow in the Southern Cascade range (Mt Hood, Mt Bachelor)
Mt Bachelor cam Monday morning.
La Niña is teasing us already.

Wolf Creek kicked off the Colorado season last week.
Northern Sweden, such as Riksgransen, due to get battered with 1-2m of snowfall in the next week or so.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Any good news on the horizon (freezing temperatures and snow) for the European Alps? The MeteoGroup currently forecasting +8c for Obergurgl in mid November. A nice resort to use as an indicator, having a long season.
Wonder how many years skiing in the Alps will continue. Year after year the warm weather holds whilst the US has seen a sluggish start it's opening for business and again shorts and T Shirts are required even at 1500 metres in the Alps. It is depressing looking at what I assume is another anti cyclone blocking cold weather (apols if I have me terminology wrong). After back to back 15 degree Feb half terms spirits are low. Perhaps to be expected the Alps location I'd poor might have to start looking at Scandinavia.
It's all crossed the luck changes in November. Where's that la nina!
Edit. Probably posted this mini rant on the wrong thread this one looks informative rather then the usual chatter and light trolling. Apologies to the serious posters here.

The Atlantic has been at record high temperature over the last 12 months.
https://climatereanalyzer.org/clim/sst_daily/?dm_id=natlan
Heading into this winter it would seem that an air mass from that direction will be warmer than normal. For Western Europe exposed to the Atlantic that is more likely to mean a higher snow line and more saturated air. That could however also facilitate heavy snowfall at altitude, like last year.

Temps trending down but no sign of snow until mid Nov at the earliest

@BobinCH, I’d rather a dry Anticyclone now rather than in Dec , one of the French Alps Meteo Groups I follow on FB mentioned that this Anticyclone has ended 12 months of Humidity and Rain . It had to happen sometime .

As of yesterday, there are 17 ski resorts open in Europe, 1 in North America, and 1 in Asia.
Mt Norquay (Banff), Canada, opening this weekend.

Whistler Blackcomb with about 12cm's overnight. Scheduled opening is Nov. 22nd. So far things are looking good.
I woke up to snow flurries at 4,200 feet. Up in the Cascades 1-2 feet at the higher elevations through Friday, and then another storm spinning way out in the Aleutian chain is looking to make its way across the PNW on Monday and possibly another low pressure mid-next week. Those systems will make there way inland and dump some snow in the Tetons, Rockies and Wasatch ranges over the weekend.

18C here during the middle part of the day….and 5C at night. Glorious Herbst. Looks that way for another 2 weeks….at which point the temperatures plummet and the snow will arrive

@Jäger, That's the optimistic view. Currently sitting in Barcelona where its the monsoon season (though not as bad as Valencia). Its very mild here too so doubt any snow in the Pyrenees. It would have been an ideal day for mountain walking / bike ride but got to work sometimes to pay for it all!

Snow continues to fall in the Cascades. Chatter about some earlier openings if conditions allow.
A-Basin and Keystone in Colorado set to open on Saturday Nov. 2nd.
I really enjoy the technical content in this thread regarding the weather - so thanks to those that keep it well updated.
I said to myself that I wouldn’t get weather anxious at all this season. However, I can’t help but recognise that some pretty big resorts in France such as VT open in less that 4 weeks time. Is anyone panicking yet!?!
I am not skiing until 26th Dec but I am skiing in Megève so panic is a very high possibility!

@leggyblonde, The Alps are nearer to here than the Sierra Nevada, its warm and damp here, assume wet and miserable in the Pyrenees unlike the glorious autumn weather in the Alps.

@Moorzee10, on 25th December two years ago Megeve had three runs open after most of the snow was washed away on Christmas Eve. However even then most runs were open in Les Contamines which is on the same lift pass. The year before there was deep snow in megeve in Christmas week but that snow had only fallen the week before. It is far too soon to worry about Christmas week.
Do the Pyrenees retain any snow over the summer normally? Don't think there's any peak above maybe 3700
Edit it seems it's 3400 at highest

@8611, there are still some small glaciers left in the Pyrenees.
I have done three long distance hikes through the central Pyrenees (Ordessa, Gavarnie, Aneto, Posets etc.) three times over the past 16 years.
In 2008 there was extensive snow cover on shaded slopes above 2500-600m in late July.
In 2012 there was even more extensive cover down to slightly lower levels but this was at the end of June.
I returned at the end of June 2023 and there was very little observable cover below 3000m.
I think the high central Pyrenees can get huge amounts of snow at the end of winter through to late April during the best years. More than the North Western Alps in an equivalent year.
I've seen the same phenomenon in the Sierra Nevada in Southern Spain where I have walked through areas with extensive snow cover to below 3000m at the end of June 2018.

I keep reading that, that they get more snow than Alps but last few years I think have been very poor? Maybe outliers.

Not panicking yet but its certainly taking its time - will be a lot happier to see something on the ground.
Fingers x for an epic season and none of these repeated wash outs like the last couple of years.
