@Matrix, was the off piste in good Nick i.e light and fluffy not heavy or wind crusty?

@munich_irish, I think this is the first time I’ve heard of avalanches in the Zillertal actually (that affected people). In the Arlberg, yes lots of times but they seemed infrequent in the Zillertal.

@VolklAttivaS5, avalanche risk was high so only nibbled off side. We were quite nervous actually as there was a lot of wind lips and obvious areas which looked ready to be triggered. It had been very windy so some sheltered areas amazing and some areas the wind had moved all the fresh snow. But yes light pow to be had.

@Matrix, I bet there’s a huge amount of snow up there on the wind loaded slopes
It won’t take much to trigger you’re right.

is there an official site that gives a report on the avalanche? I'm wondering if it slid on the faceted snow next to the ground or a weak layer not so deep,

That one underneath/in the vicinity of the 150er lift must have been the off piste descent they call ‘death valley’
To be honest it was not very sensible skiing the pitches they’ve described in these articles considering the avalanche danger rating, the amount of snow fall in a short time and the visibility level.

@VolklAttivaS5, I think it’s closer to the black run back to the snow park. We had to take the 150 tux back to the valley as they had closed red 66 around lunch time.

@Matrix, ah right, I was thinking who in their right mind would go down there (in the valley) last few days!

Mind you the other areas where people were caught were slopes of 35/40 degrees making it likely rather than unlikely (considering the conditions).

@VolklAttivaS5, assuming the Moselbahn event was the bowl after the first corner (looking skiers left back up the slope past the tree line). You have to gain access above the avi barriers. Bonkers given the risks.
I didn’t see any tracks into Death Valley in the morning.

Looks like a period of warm weather coming over the next week. Hope it gets colder/snow before the Easter crowds arrive. We are there a little later than usual this year so will be praying for late snow!

My son is out there this week, been a mixed bag, lots of new snow but bluebird today and tomorrow.
I just committed adultery though, we always head out at the end of March, but as we were already there in Jan, and since a super cheap half board deal came up on Crystal for Galtur, Mrs said let's do Galtur/ischgl instead.
Will miss it, though may head back out in June.

@VolklAttivaS5, small world! We are heading out on the 1.45 out of Manchester as there's nothing left from Edinburgh. Bit of a pita but the drive will be forgotten soon enough.
Say hello if you see us. I'm a baldy b'stard under that hat.
Haven't been to Ischgl since 2018.
Coming down under the chair.
Looking back up.

How's the piste holding up in Kaltenbach - looks OK on the webcam but it seems to be quite warm ( even overnight) - we're heading out there in a weeks time

@phil_o, The pistes are complete and good in the morning. Lower down it's getting pretty soft by lunchtime... However, don't take any notice of this, because the forecast next week is for -8/10C and snow off and on all week. We're expecting it to be looking very different by next weekend.

Gschösswandhaus down below the Penken is fantastic for lunch. Bit of a pain to get to, but food and the views are worth it. Stieralm was good, although very busy. Schiestl's Sunnalm on Red 7 another favourite with exceptional gluwhein. We also love the Waldhutte if you venture over to Eggalm for the day for a drink stop.
Apres is typically just an hour in the Pilzbar as they now bin you out just after 4.30. Ice Bar at the Penken base if you fancy it...
I'd definitely use the train to have a day in Kaltenbach and/or Zell. The PostAlm at the base of Kaltenbach is an experience if you want the proper Austrian apres experience and (in my view) a considerably nicer environment than Bruck Stadl or the Ice Bar. If you're in the Kaltenbach area for the day, the Aarwirt is our favourite of all the restaurants in the valley. So, so good - spinatknodel is 10/10.
We had evening good meals at Cafe Tirol, Edelweiss, Hotel Rose and Hotel Kramerwirt but booking is now very much needed!
Also ensure you go for a drink in the bar at the Neue Post - the interior is extraordinary.

All good recommendations. For a bit more upmarket lunch on the mountain try the SchneekarHutte.
The tapas / steak place called El Torro in town is excellent.
For crazy apres try Brück n Stadl (dump your skis and boots first at your hotel)
Conditions look amazing. We are out over Easter too.

Spring conditions today. Last nights snow turned to rain below 2200. Bullet proof pistes until about 10am before turning to corn. Almost completely empty today so pistes didn’t get very bumpy in the soft chop.
Looks to be turning colder from tomorrow but big dump on snow on Sunday looks to be much less now.
Pistes in v.good condition though.
Home run on Ahorn closed.

Have been here all week, and we started with freezing conditions, over 40cm of new snow, followed up with warm spring temps, +6 degrees at the top of Kombepenken at 11 yesterday was surreal, followed up with rain last night. Was a bit colder today, pistes remain in good condition. To make the best use of the spring conditions we started the day by skiing the reds off penkenjoch at 9am, followed by 48 to a chair half way down to Finkeberg. We then headed up to Rastogel and did the reds at Hobergloch, Lammerbichl and Wanolspitz multiple times, followed by a coffee, and then back home via the resort run. After 2pm, most of the reds into the valley (which penken and horberg feed into) were slushy and sticky. Hope you enjoy Mayhrofen as much as we did, no queues, pistes quiet and the infrastructure makes getting around really easy. Hope to come back and do some of the surrounding resorts. Can't help with evening meals, we stayed and ate in the Elisabeth (which was excellent), we ate in the Italian on the main street for lunch twice (was v.good), Kaiser Meindl (solid food and good apres), and the pizza bar by Penken Park (my sons favourite, good pizza, beer and gr8 views of the jumps). Eating and drinking in the huts much better value than france, although I would take cash as some don't accept cards, and if they do have min order values fo 20 euro.....

First few runs done. Shocked by the signs of barish patches on 31 and 32 which no sign of almost 2 weeks later last year. Reflection of the season this year

@NickyJ, yes thin snow pack everywhere this season (apart from a few examples in North America) even with this latest dump this week.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@NickyJ, though overall the pistes are pretty much perfect. Not many places struggling. Only down to Eggalm really.
Cold today at the top (-7) but +3 at the board park at lunch time. Spring pistes!
