Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alex A, if the weather arrives as forecast Le tour could be a bit bleak, the snow is fine but with no trees or cover from the wind it wouldn't be my choice. Les Houches if you can get parked has the trees it was thin a couple of days back but should be ok now. I've had some great days in poor weather in the Magic Forrest at GM. Failing that a trip to Courmayeur where at least you'll get a good lunch and coffee.

It's raining in Les Houches right now.

Alex A, very good reports from Grands Montets this morning. TBH, Les Houches is so sparse - which would be our normal bad weather zone so you're not going to find trees anywhere. I'd go B-F to avoid the GM crowds.

Great, thanks !

I did the magic forest 2 years ago as part of my first proper off-piste experience. Fantastic but super hard at the time. I'd like to try it again this year if the snows ok.

Skied in Courmayeur today, it was snowing hard all day and vis wasn't great, but had a brilliant day skiing in the trees, in freshies all day. Snow was a bit heavy but it's still going down as a powder day. Half hour delay on the mb tunnel looked a lot more going France to Italy. Sleety rain turning to snow right now in Chamonix, looks set in for the night. Very Happy Very Happy

Yes it's warm in the valley - well it's above freezing at the moment, but it's freezing up at night and there is no almost no one skiing to wreck the snow so no real problem Wink

Oh and the Vallee Blanche was very nice today.....during lunch brake.

Skied at Flegere today. Almost empty! Which was great after the mayhem of the last couple of weeks. On piste conditions are almost perfect, some sections haven't been bashed yet. Off piste there is still a bit to be had, although it's a little stiffer with the warm temps. We didn't get the 70% sunshine forecast by meteo Cham and had flat light later in the day! all in all, great skiing.

Idris, vb looks good, what the bottom like?

Les Houches was also pretty quiet today away from the races. Plenty of freshly groomed corderoy to lay down loverly carved tracks and also plenty of chopped up (and fresh) powder to play in: the overnight low made it a bit dryer and lighter than yesterday. Favourite run was the top half of Kandahar/Verte: freshly groomed and no-one on it apart from me and youngster (who still can't start racing for another two years...).

To Montonvers, fine .

To Mottets a bit of an adventure getting off the snout, wandering through the boulders. but the climb out is just as tough as normal. Ski out was in good nick, made it all the way to the level crossing before the uninterrupted tarmac made me take my skis off.

lynseyf - you'll love it, provided you can cope with the travelling to and from the ski stations. If you have a car, no problem - just a short drive from town to wherever you want to ski. Otherwise it's the ski bus.
I've been going to Chamonix once a year for a long weekend with some mates for the last 5 or 6 years. It offers great variety with something for everyone. Grand Montets is up there with the best areas if you like to ski off piste and the run from the top on marked but unprepared runs is great fun. You've got Les Houche for when the visibility is poor - lots of pisted skiing in below the tree line. It's our go to place after a big dump when vis remains poor - and it's often the only place open early as it's relatively easy to prepare compared with the more gnarly areas like Grand Montets, where avi control takes longer. Plus, Chamonix is one of the most appealing towns to spend a few days in over winter and spend money on ski related things you don't really need! Added bonus is that you can ski in Courmayeur on the same pass, provided you go for the Mont Blacn unlimited pass (it also get's you a discounted ticket for the MB tunnel). That's worth bearing in mind as an option if you have a car and fancy a day somewhere else. 2 years ago we had a horrible low cloud/fog sort of day in Cham and out hotel owner (who was also amountain guide) suggested we nip throiugh the tunnel. We did so and were greeted by clear blue skies and a fantastic days cruising the pistes and enjoying the cracking italian food.

Finally, if it interests you, the World freeride Tour is in town over the weekend 25/26th I think - worth spectating for a few hours if you like that sort of thing.

By coincidence, our annual pilgrimege there also starts on 23 Jan. Very Happy But sadly only lasts until 27th Sad .

Thanks for the reports - always a pleasure to read.
Have you been up to the Midi recently? I'm arriving tomorrow, and thinking that's prob about the safest place to be off piste at the moment, given the conditions. Do you know how the conditions are nearby, eg Courmayeur, Megeve?

Any tips for Courmayeur - where to ski (especially if bad vis) or is it obvious - just head for the trees? We've always stayed in the valley before but your comments have me tempted....Skullie

Cheers,
Dave.

mickv, thanks, yeah had seen the FWT was there but luckil this didn't seem to have too big an impact on accomodation.

How much of an advantage is a car, I don't mind getting the bus and am used to spread out ski resorts having skied Mayrhofen/Tux a bit. I am going to Geneva by train and boyfriend is flying from UK so we are arriving at different times so just getting our own transfer bus would probably be easiest and save hanging about the airport for ages. A car will also be quite a bit more expensive seen as there are only 2 of us and we would need to hire for 10 days, how much of an advantage is it?

nemesys, there are four areas.
The Toula glacier which is serious offpiste territory.
The val veny, shaded in the morning, sunny in the afternoon. Lots of offpiste fun in the trees, and some top specs for lunch and coffees.
The plan cecrouit side sunny in the morning, wide open pistes lots of easy runs. Plenty of lunch specs incl one of the best in the alps.
The Youla and Arp, this area is high and treeless with a red piste down, but has lots of top notch off piste decents without the worry of glaciated terrain. There are 3/4 north facing that drop into the val veny, and another couple more south facing that come down on the Courmayeur side.
All have significant avi risk on the wrong day.
Have fun.

AndAnotherThing.., I have skied from both quite a few times, but not this season! There is no restriction skiing from the arp anymore although they do seem to keep an eye on people who aren't equipped. The last time I was there last Sunday there were a few people skiing out to zerrotta, I assume they had skied from the top. There is a new book with these descents well described, Mont Blanc Freeride.

Hello Chamonix peeps. I'll be in the Grand Massif for my annual "boys trip" from this Sunday... as conditions aren't great, we may consider a couple of drives to try other areas... Cham is only 45 mins away (ish) - which area should we head to (all decent skiers... not overly fussed about off-piste). Any advice welcome, thanks - Steve

Thanks for the advice jbob and AndAnotherThing.. - much appreciated.

Usually spend most of our time off-piste but maybe not this year with the avi situation - perhaps stick to the trees and shallower stuff.
