The only way I found to save money on rental there was to book online in advance, although I've not checked Hervis, that might be worth a look as stanton says.

Yes ... Zermatt (which ain't a cheap place to ski either) has had a Migros supermarket and a Co-op supermarket for several decades. These places are free to sell stuff (including ski accessories) that specialised shops might cartel about.

clarky999,
If your only skiing/boarding once (1 or 2 weeks) a season which is your
average holiday maker its not crap but very good value.
Ski gear/apparel in general is grossly over priced in comparison
to the cost of its production in China or elsewhere.

I've always managed go get bargains in St Anton ski shops, you've just got to be savvy about it! If you choose to buy December - March you will pay full price, however if you buy pre-season or especially late season it's a great place for cheap quality tech gear. I know plenty of business operators in St Anton and have respect for them, and I know they provide a high quality of service and are not operating a cartel, they have a short season and need to get their returns on the capital they outlay on stock. If you go late, after Easter there's some great deals about.
Anyone who expects cheap ski/ boot hire is shopping in the wrong resort, the kit for hire on Alber, Jennewein etc is top quality gear and they charge a premium for this top gear and service....buy your own, invest in your own gear, buy it in summer sales and take if with you is my advice. Either that or hire in Imst, Zams or even Pettneu where it's much cheaper, but less convenient if anything goes wrong.

Shouldn't have read your post Markymark29, I know there are pre season deals, been doing my best to resist so far, especially walking past the likes of Surfers where they are getting out all the shiny, new stock, but might have to call in at some of the shops and take a look....
I will echo the fact that the kit for hire is quality stuff, there have been a number of times when either my guests or I have been handed brand new ski boots for hire (which as mine were season hire ones, I did not expect), and I know that Jennewein are good at letting you swap skis during the hire period depending on conditions. Doesn't seem to be as much choice or quality of rental skis at Hervis, which I think is what clarky999 is getting at.

Is there a link to booking Hervis online? I can't seem to find it on the website...but I might be missing it due to my servere lack of German

Dublinfella, not sure about hervis, but the big shops are all part of the main networks (e.g. Jennewein is in the Sport2000 network) so you can book via those sites. You might also get a discount via your accommodation provider - certainly worth asking.

Markymark, I cannot reconcile these three statements. Jennewein is certainly top quality gear and service. But then so are dozens (hundreds?) of French hire shops that are half the price.
That you agree that St Anton is more expensive than Imst etc. suggests you agree that St Anton is a very expensive place to hire kit for no particular reason.

Same as any other ski shop.

James the Last, for clarification Imst is not a ski resort, you pay a premium in any ski resort compared with a town down the valley. If you want cheap then go hire your gear in France so be it. Market forces dictate the pricing, and all the shops look busy to me. A question - If you hired a car in Knightsbridge wouldn't you think it'd likely cost you more than similar model in downtown Lille, same argument IMO.
St Anton is one of the premier wintersports resorts in the world, I wouldn't expect to be getting a bargain......hence the reason I keep my own quiver, service my own gear and drag it to the Alps myself. I keep out of the shops and do my buying out of season. All I'm saying I'd if you want to hire don't be surprised if you pay a premium, if you don't like that then hire elsewhere but don't say people are ripping you off, they're applying market forces!

Issue with StA is it's a rigged market ..... local cartel ...... there are no market forces !
I take my own but the locals rip off thousands of punters each year.

Billa opened today. Popped in quickly, just off the main road past Hotel Tyrol as you head towards Christoph. Not a large store but has, IMHO, more variety than Spar and a larger, if not poorly laid out, car park. Also has a cash machine out front so handy for stopping off to get cash without the hassle of finding somewhere to park and walk to one.

Sitter,
The Billa site was once owned by a millionaire British person (will remain anom) who had a large Chalet on the site financed by the banks. .
During that season ( a few back) The owner Repayments dried up & he absconded.
The Heating was left off during this period & all the water pipes burst & pretty much left a disaster zone. The banks took reposession of the property & tried to sell it without success as no one was interested due to the extensive damege & costs.
The banks own the site and new building & I believe there still pursuing the previous owner through the courts.

Will the snowboarders be trapped into a cage or will there be a fellow in leather with whips and chains?

OK, so gear hire now sorted through TO - seems to be cheaper through them than direct with any of the usual operators or places we could find online.
Next question, lift passes. Is there just one pass for the whole area, including St Christoph, Anton and the rest of the area? From the website I can only see one price on the list, seems to be 204 euros from 14th to 21st Dec - correct?
Sorry for the series of minor questions, but getting an answer out of TO takes 2 days and getting an answer here seems to take 2 minutes
|

Lift pass is inclusive of the whole area;St.Anton, Cristoph, Rendl, Lech, Zurs, Stuben, Sonnenkopf, Warth - even better value this season!
There's high season and low season from what I recall, you can check the dates on the price list found on the lift pass details pdf on stanton website.
