David Murdoch, I have to agree with Alex A, on this one, not as far as his little spat with carled, is going, but in relation to the way this season has gone so far. You and I have both been out here long enough to know that despite what a lot of people may think, this is not a great season. How many powder days have we (I) really had, five to ten maybe? The snow below 1500m is shite for the time of year; the only worse years I can remember are those glorious years of the late eighties/early ninties and last year. Granted the snow above 1500m is fine, but that's all. I can't see them running the Hauts Forts slalom race in July this year!

zzz, I have boarded about 20 days this year so far and have had 5 huge powder days, but surely the early season massive dumps have set the season up for an extended period, skiing from end of Nov to late in to the season hopefully at altitude due to the good base, which makes it a good season?. Quality and cover is one thing, but length of season is also an indicator as to how good the season is. For me the fact that I was knee deep in powder on 1st Dec and likely to be having decent conditions well in to April at EOSB is more important than snow cover at 1300 or how many powder days I have had.

February was (in Europe!) by and large unseasonably warm & dry. Yes Agenterre, I know that for the first part of the month it was brass monkeys, especially at night, and this saved a mini-disaster by at least letting the resorts run the snow cannons for extended periods. Had it been as warm throughout Feb as it was at the end, then it would have been pretty glum indeed before the latest snow arrived.
Largely speaking I suppose that it's all utterly subjective... if you go out there and get great snow on any/all trips you have then you had a "great season..." If you're looking at it objectively and in pure statistics of the amount of snow that fell, then it suffers in comparison to many other years... agreed.

The 12z run is trickling out - up to Monday 10th at the moment and it's pushing the precipitation through a bit sooner and looking like Switzerland/Northern French Alps & Austria will get precipitation a bit earlier than was looking likely. I say "precipitation" as at middling heights (1300-1500m) it may be a bit borderline for snow/sleet.
...
... just hanging on for a few mins here to see where this big lump of precipitation that's wellying the British Isles on Monday (damn strong winds too) is headed and how quickly...
...
Hmmm... Late Monday into Tuesday is starting to look very meteorologically interesting indeed for the Alpine regions... my word... very interesting indeed. Should be a nice set of wigglies for this run when they come out at about 7pm or thereabouts!

Wowsers... loads and loads of precipitation right through Tuesday and into Wednesday. Being caused by the warm/cold fronts pretty much running all along Europe in a line running east/west so it's a ceaseless loop of dumping going on... Would cause some very nice accumulations of snow if it happens. What's the betting it will all slip South over the coming days... ?

No... oh hang on, yes, I think I am a member on netweather, but I hardly go on there anymore as I got fed up with all the idiots who take it personally if it snows in Norwich and they get nothing in Derby or something. There are too many people out there thinking the weather is running a personal vendetta against them...
I spend too much time on here as it is already, not enough time left over to play elsewhere!

from my reading of the wigglies, still a good possibility of snow around the 11th thru 13th March, the control run has a warm blip for 2 days starting on the 12th, but not many other runs agree.
After that carled's snowman is either going to melt or be very happy, as there is huge divergence around temperatures...but not much (any) new snow....
cheers,
greg

No - well not for Wengen anyway! - the snow will arrive on or around the 9th, not the 11th and stay until the 13th on and off. Then a clear, warm period (without rain, fortunately) then a drop back down in temps and more snow around the 19th/20th = maybe a day or so before if the weather systems kick in a bit quicker. A bit of sunshine/clear skies in between the snow too.
Lots of freshies for MSB crew in Wengen! A slight word of warning though is that the snow is coming from the Southerly edge of the weather system... if that tracks any further North then Switzerland and Austria will start to run the risk of missing out on the snow. It would have to shift a fair way though and the risk only seems there from Tuesday - Sunday/Monday is looking pretty much nailed on for a bit of the lovely white stuff now... famous last word probably...
Kranjska Gora is in line for a bit of earlier snow from the looks of things - I can see the end of the lump of precipitation circling around Italy at the moment shoving up and over Slovenia starting tomorrow and maybe into Saturday. It's a decaying system so not huge amounts of snow, but any snow is good snow, right Fruity? Then it should be patchy clear/cloudy for a day or so until the weather system coming in from the West (that hits Switzerland/Austria on Sunday) makes it into Slovenia by Monday and should hang around until Tue/Wed and then clear up for a couple of days before the chance of more snow later in the week.
Confidence-wise, I can't see the Alps missing out on the snow coming through on Sunday/Monday (and, indeed as there is a huge pool of precipitation currently circling a couple of hundred km South of the alps with a few bits breaking off and tracking North, Italy/Austria/Slovenia/Bulgaria may well get a few 'splinter groups' of snow before the main event shows up on Sunday) as that weather system looks too well set in to break up now... we'll see... The outlook beyond Monday/Tuesday is a little less certain as some of the wigglies go for the frontal system moving off North and some have it sticking South enough to help the Alps out. I think it stands a good chance of sticking in the right longitude to continue delivering snow as things stand... bit of sleet/rain down below 1000-ish metres as things push through to next Weds/Thurs maybe, but not too bad in the grand scheme of things.

No worries. Yeah I'll be in Wengen from 15th-22nd, so although it'll be a warm start to our weeks, it should turn colder and end up with some fresh snowfalls to play with... fingers crossed. At least there's fresh snow going to be falling between now and then to keep the pistes topped up and that has to be good news.
