Just back - in time for some to be watching the rugby - from a morning around Les Gets and a bit of Morzine, showing round some friends who are just here for a few days and new to the area. I loved it first thing when nicely hard and corduroyed - they preferred it when it softened up. Its been cloudy today which must be preserving the snow with the sun hiding. Very much quieter today and I imagine the road down the hill would have been busy this morning.

Still hints of colder weather and snow in 7 days time - still just that too far away so that is has a chance of going pear shaped, especially as the GFS is rather different to the ECMWF well before then, but the potential is there.
Snow eating conditions today!

Here is our latest snow forecast from the site...
Chatel Snow Forecast Update 15/03/2014: 5.55pm
The latest GFS operational model run is showing the potential for snow arriving by next Saturday, with further snowfalls after that into the following week. This is obviously good news and the latest UK Met Office charts appear to show a similar evolution during next week. The not so good news is that the ECMWF charts this morning were showing a different set up, meaning there is still a chance that we might be seeing very different charts tomorrow. Tonight's ECMWF model run will be an interesting one and hopefully it will show a similar outlook to the GFS.
In the meantime, the weather looks like becoming sunny again tomorrow and also for the first part of the week with some very warm daytime temperatures likely which will make it feel more like summer.

I have actually gone down one set of gloves warmth-wise, still have another pair in reserve - up until when we went back to UK on 9th Feb I was in my thickest ones with the heating teabags every day. I have now discarded thermals but was in a light fleece, quilted jacket and shell jacket still today, but I am quite a chilly soul. I need to get into some storage bags and find some lighter trousers now - but that is as much due to the old 5:2 stuff as weight of the clothing!
We have friends staying till Tuesday and Wednesday so the snow needs to hold out a bit - on our own we can put up with muck and bullets!

Phew - another scorcher - lovely day over on Mt Chery where visiting friends were just amazed by the views. Clear, bright, bright blue sky. The boys preparing the snowpark for the boarders were doing a great job with Irish music and shamrocks around the place. Quite heavy skiing back down to the gondola just before 3 but with the amount of sun I was surprised it wasn't more so.

The sunshine compensates for a lot doesn't it Chatel Snow, but it would be nice to have a bit more snow before we finish.

Yep - am loving the blue skies and sunshine, but would be nice for a top up/ top ups to ensure good conditions for the last 6 weeks of the season.

It's very early in the season to be doing the "packing up at lunchtime" routine - it's normally into April. I reckon winter will make a brief re-appearance.

sarah, did you notice where Chatel Snow was skiing today?
In response to your earlier post I'd say grab the car keys and impose your will. Don't leave it to a vote. Cret Beni is a lovely little area, some great views and as it is Northish facing the snow is pretty good. There are lots of good blue/red runs and you could certainly pass an enjoyable day there. We did three days on which we skied one side in the morning and the other (Braitaz) in the afternoon or vice versa. Best of all a day pass is €27.50 compared to €47.50 for a PDS day pass. It is quicker to get to from Chatel centre than Pre La Joux. Only down side is that one half is served by a long drag lift which doesn't worry me but some aren't keen on them.
There is one restaurant half way up which looked very good and one at the bottom (Clos Savoyard) which is quite excellent.

Nice review DJL!
The one good thing about the long drag on the right hand side of the area is that it is self limiting - ie , that section tends to stay quieter
Special offer today 24euros for the day, though the only reason I found this out was that my lovely wife discovered she had left her pds season pass in our apartment (in one of her other jackets).
Clos Savoyard is very very good. And for none skiers - you can go and check out the dog sledding and horse sleigh rides a short distance away. Cret Beni is a little gem!

ps - in response to Sarah above - not sure when Cret Beni closes - as Panthiaz closes 6th April, so am unsure whether Cret Beni will be open at Easter.... will find out
pps - am told it might be a case of play it by ear, depending on conditions.

Chatel Snow, will be shut then for sure, we are not out til the 12th. I was hoping to get out on my own for 3-4 days before end of March but it's not looking very likely at the mo.

Blue skies in Chatel again this morning and already feeling very warm in the sunshine.
Brief look at the models this morning shows that we are still on for some snow at the weekend and it is now starting to show in the local forecasts too (Meteo Suisse etc)
Whether it is a brief return to winter, or an ongoing unsettled spell remains very uncertain.

Hi. Apologies for asking but not sure where to put this query and know there are a lot of locals regularly on this particular thread.
Having enjoyed a wonderful ski trip here during first week in March we plan to return during the first two weeks of June with our road bikes. Research tells me that lifts don't open until 14th June (we can't come later). Whilst we don't need lifts for road cycling it would be nice to get up and hike a bit (it would be good to go to mountain restaurants somewhere like Linderets/Les Gets or similar where we've eaten on our ski trip). Can you access the mountain at all before 14th June or are a lot of things including restaurants/shops shut? Many thanks!

Not to worry - have now spoken with Tourist Office who tell me early June is very quiet and alot of shops/restaurants shut. So perhaps need to rethink

under a new name, I am back from two weeks in the sun to escape the Alpine winter. I think I should have stayed in France, almost as warm.
Mrs zzz and I went for a ski around Nyon and Chamossiere on Sunday. I was expecting the snow to be devastated but was surprised to see most pistes well covered and beautifully slushy. Some runs were closed for avalanches from the surrounding terrain.
The weekend forecast now suggests rain but hey ho. It will be what it is. You won't care anyway. You'll be somewhere far warmer
|

|
|
|
zzz, Ahhh, we hope you had an excellent time.
It was 25C in Aosta on Sunday afternoon - mind you the bumps were lovely and slushy and the slopes around Chamonix, Courmayeur and Champoluc (notwithstanding the outrageous amounts of snow that has fallen in Italy) are all in good shape.

I'm so close to booking to come out to Morzine this Sunday but the scorching weather this week and the rather worrying webcam images are holding me back! How are the upper slopes holding up?
Maybe I shouldn't be too concerned as the long term forecast for Sunday and Monday look fantastic!?!
