stewart woodward, whose colours will you be wearing?
Isn't this an opportunity that Brit ski schools should run with? Put together a package of cheaper group lessons, get agreements in place with TOs, take on more instructors?

albinomountainbadger, some predictable vitriolic comments on there like "when is the turn of the English restaurants and bars?" and they enjoy referring to their British chums as "a55holes" and of course highly critical of skiing ability. My Froglish isn't that good mind.

Bode Swiller, I find it reads a bit like this thread to be honest, but less chat of the deadly EU.
1. Introducing the article explaining the ban: "At last"
2. "Seeing how hard it is to get the qualification which guarantees the quality of instructors in France, it seems about time the law got involved in this!!!!! Of course a qualification should be necessary!!"
3. "At last: good news."
4. "Finally"
5. "It's not enough!!"
6. "So when [do we tackle] the English bars and restaurants?"
7. "Yes, I agree" [followed by presumambly anti-english joke I don't really get]
8. "And when they've all left Meribel you'll be happy eh... Ah but poo-poo, there won't be any work at all for the isntructors then..."
9. "Proctectionism... it's good... It's why kids get sent back to the shops for having twintips... It's why skiing becomes more corporate and more stupid... Decisions such as this are stupid... Thqt this job is protected, there's no question about that..."
etc etc etc
Then at the end:
"So in this case, what do you do about all the hoteliers who have accompanied their clients on the pistes for generations, without necessairly having an instructor qualification... Is it because they're local that it doesn't bother you? And when I ski with my mates from elsewhere on the pistes, am I illegal? Teaching skiing is a real profession, and to defend a profession is right; but there are times when you have to respect common sense..."

Not about to comment on ski, but having seen the quality of snowboard instruction elsewhere, I'd say that comment is utterly hilarious.

Maybe some of you with FB accounts should clear up some of the misunderstandings on that Facebook page? They seem to be confusing ski leading with instruction and also believe UK instructors only need a few days training.

I find that hard to believe, they're the best of the best those guys; you know they've done a slalom course on skis right?..

The following point of view courtesy of one of British Masterclass's clients this week:
"Next time an ex racing ESF puts one of his snivelling kids on my chairlift making me the responsible adult, I will throw the little git off. After all I don’t have a diploma do I ?"

Just for once I feel really conflicted . . . yes, hosting needs to be quantified and qualified . . . no I doesn't need Basi L2 + TT + Eurotest to do it . . . Some where in all this shite there has to be a couple of level heads that can get together and actually produce a working paper for real; discussion and if it has to be in French . . . so be it . . . It was once the language of English Kings.

And a few phrases of old Norman French are still used in Parliament e.g when the Royal assent to a Bill is given, they announce "La Reine le veult", see this

Comedy Goldsmith, What a Tw@. Factually incorrect, jingoistic BS. Daily Wail Skiing and SKGB share the same prehistoric genes. Both heading for extinction.
"Yes , we'll teach them Froggies, we'll all go ski elsewhere" to which the polite reply would be "Au Revoir .. and take all your m8s with you"

Agenterre, on the other hand, a straw poll of colleagues at work reveals that they too think the ESF are being a bunch of tossers, and several have said that it will serve them right if British punters (and others - bear in mind that Dutch, Belgian and Scandi ops offer the same service) either use other schools or just ski elsewhere.

Lizzard, Yes, it makes sense for folks to worry. However, even here (UK), folks on this thread can see two sides to the story and a degree of grey.
That 'article' is just BS.

If I correctly recall, they made a similar statement when the UK threatened to leave the EU... or was it, "Let us roll out the red carpet for you on your exit".

I thought the article was quite restrained. Certainly compared to your comment.

It's certainly a laughable idea but I think this is, sadly, the main driver of the legal action.

Hmmm.... I've thought of a brilliant counter to this nefarious plan to FORCE people into hiring instructors...
Why don't all those frightened British skiers get a piste map FOR FREE? I'm sure that must be what they do when visiting other places that don't offer hosting.

miranda, I'm sure that's what will happen (though the mention of 'fear' in the article is presumably ironic). Which makes the 'safety' argument moot, of course.

maggi, yes, in its "ironic" discussion of safety, it does make British skiers (because the article does only refer to British skiers) sound rather useless, if

denying them the free service of familiarisation could be considered dangerous in itself |

I had thought, as you said, hosting was a sociable activity for lone skiers - makes much more sense to me to argue that point.

Is this a large percentage of skiers?
|
|
|
|

blahblahblah, I'd guess it was a large percentage of people who specifically go to places where ski hosting is provided. Also, some couples like to ski with a host, just to meet and ski with others (and dilute the "let's go down the black", "no, let's take the blue" arguments!)
