kitenski, I know, I wondered but I didn't like to assume. Also I wondered if there might something about them sticking to their own areas? For example BASS Chatel lessons rarely ski outside Chatel except on privates or some All Mountain courses, likewise I've never seen BASS Morzine/LG in Chatel.
abd, hope it goes well

Skiied morzine today, fun to be had over by chamoissiere with the best snow of the day on the red, the black beside it was a touch icy in spots. Pistes holding up surprisingly well, very nice day's ski. A lot of joy to be found carving through the slushy soft bumps!

Normally because the travel time of getting from Morzine to Chatel, or vice versa, eats in to teaching time way too much. But on all-day courses the BASS or TSI guys will head to wherever there is good teaching pitches (the Stade in to Chatel is particularly good for short radius turns, so I've spent a fair amount of time there).

One of my best days on skis!
First lift from Pre La Joux and over to mosettes, peered at the couloir by the cross but left it for later and had a couple of runs including the run down Tovassiere to Morgins which was great at the top but too much road later. Then round the Swiss side back to Mosettes and down the cross couloir about 11.30. It was hot work and a bit too soft by then but OK. Steep at the top and narrow at the bottom but another one I've looked at a lot over the years. Then up the Chavanettte chair and down to Avoriaz foe a few runs. Coupe still good at 12.30 but the Arete des Intrets bumps were pretty icy which puzzled us a bit.
Lunch half way down to Prodains then our first experience of the new lift - very nive but the escalator is a bit wierd. Few runs round Avoriaz, down through the goat village to Ardent then back to Chatel to finish off with a bit of silliness on Donkeys. Then it struck me that I can now ski bumps with a bit of rhythm.
abd, if you are interested in BASI and bumps the BASI jackets were in action on the side of the red Chaux Fleurie from Rochassons and the stade down to the Express Intrets chair in Avoriaz.
sanman, still lots of snow - a few of the sunnier Swiss runs suffering bit it will still be good next week.
Last day tomorrow and I think we're going back to Cret Beni!

Chaux Fleurie was a Level 2 group, the bumps to the side of the Stade in Avoriaz (underneath Express Intrets) were Level 3.

rob@rar, that clocks my level then. I reckon I could have got in amongst the Chaux Fleurie group and not been shown up but those guys in Avoriaz were looking far too good.

DJL, the Avoriaz bumps were required a lot of commitment, but they improved when the snow softened. My knees are a bit sore though!

So all you locals & Chatel regulars, what route would you recommend for the drive from Geneva airport to Chatel? Over the top of Lake Geneva, Lausanne or South of the lake and Versoix?
Whichever route, where's best to stop on the way for a supermarket for provisions?
Thanks as ever

abd, we always drive all the way and so come in via the North side of the lake, Lausanne, Montreux, Monthey, Morgins etc. From the airport I don't know which way is recommended.
Coming in from the Swiss side, there is a big Co-op (I think, could be Migros) and a commercial centre at Monthey though we've never stopped there. From the French side then my recommended supermarket stop would be the enormous Carrefour at on the Espace Leman 3 Commercial Centre at Anthy, near Thonon. Otherwise there is a reasonable sized Intermarche between La Chapelle and Chatel once you are almost there.

|
|
|
|
abd, I would have thought it to be much quicker thru Geneva, Thonon and val d'Abondance? Stop at a big supermarket just before Thonon (I think there's a commercial centre).
Although GMaps seems to think there's not much in it timewise, but via Lausanne an extra ~60kms...

Think it depends on the day and time. My preference is for the south via Thonon. Big Carrefours at Douvaine and Thonon. and plenty of smaller ones along the way.

MeMyselfandI, yes, towards the bottom of the bumps section, but only for one run as the snow was cooked. Was mostly on Ambroselli (sp?) and Rhodos, then a couple of laps on the Yeti.

There were some BASI guys standing halfway down Sautenailles (to the right of the Nauchets) watching people do short turns that I went past two or three times. I was slightly tempted to stop and ask them what they thought of mine

Well I think that may be end of season for me unless we get a cheeky weekend in right at the end.
Both bits of La Chapelle, Torgon and Barbossine today. Snow was obviously softening as the sun worked on it but there is still enough to ski all the way down the Jorette to Torgon with no bare patches. Very quiet in those areas so the snow didn't cut up too much. Some bits if caught right were really very good.
Lunch at 1500m above Cret Beni was scorchio.
Have fun all you lucky types that are here for another month.

Pamski, looking at the piste map there are two drag lifts that you have to take on the circuit. Are they particularly long or steep? Other half is a boarder who hates drag lifts so need to use my powers of persuasion to get her to head that way! I do like the idea of having the mountain pretty much to yourself.

gazatron, you don't see many boarders over on that circuit - the first drag is marked 'tres difficile' and is quite long and has a bit of a bend in it, the next one Torchon does periodically do quite a jerk so could throw a boarder off I would imagine. There are also some parts that you have to keep speed up or do a bit of poling so might be tricky for a boarder. In fact there is now a third drag which gets you back on to the run down to the gondola base and cuts out a long flat bit - so that could be considered an improvement for a boarder, and its a really gentle poma, one of the elasticated type, not one of the ones on a pole. Not meaning to put you off but if your OH is a bit iffy about drag lifts then it might not lead to a great day out.

Just back from morzine and was skiing the area today. Temperatures extremely high at 18 Deg at top of pleny. Snow is wet and thin and in some areas horses have been put on the pistes to graze! I would say there about 7 days of skiing left unless the temperatures drop dramatically. I'm no expert but in the four days I spent there it was clearly visible how quickly the snow was going.

I''ll post the pic of the electronic screen which stated 18.2 deg. It was incredibly hot in Morzine, I spent 3 days skiing in a T shirt and there were several brits skiing without any shirts all together. I really hope it cools down as things are getting silly, more like water skiing o. Lower slopes...

These were horses grazing, can't remember the lift but you have to take a run up hill then through a small tunnel. Snack bar just the other side then the lift (very long and slow 3 seater. It takes you back up to a run that gets you back to pleny.

gazatron,
edit - just realised I was replying to the wrong post - tip for drags, suggest to her to secure both feet in bindings in the queue, this then makes all types of drags a doddle.
sarah,
We love La Chapelle Cret Beni, it is often very very quiet and makes a pleasant half day excursion (same can be said of Abondance).

mrlossyman, Ricklovesthepowder, don't underestimate how good they are at keeping the pistes skiable, nor the differences in melt rate between compacted piste snow and uncompacted snow elsewhere.
