Sadly the present Mrs. Carled doesn't fancy the idea of sharing me with another woman just yet (er, I presume you ARE a woman...?) but I'll keep your details on file and advise you should a suitable opportunity arise. Can't say fairer than that.

Very fair. Thank you. Yes, I am a woman, but the description 'chick', AxsMan, would be pushing it. Considerably.

it is snowing there at the moment (lightly) , based on the live Solaise webcam , we are arriving on the 9th and hoping for fresh snow too. I have no idea how to read these graphs so an eductaed response on Val/Tignes prospects of fresh snow would be great. Val D'Isere has stated it had 2cm of new snow last night , and that was not forecast on any websites and they are saying more snow today and tomorrow. |
Au contraire. The precipitation has been showing up on the GFS runs for ages. And if you've been paying attention you'll have heard me banging on about it being too warm to fall as snow much below about 1800m. Remind me again of the resort height of Val D'espair? Oh yeah, about 1800m, right? Amazing. Give me a television show right NOW. The weather gods demand it. Alternatively learn to read the wigglies. You know it makes sense.

No. You're wrong. Now stop being so damn negative. It's been alternatingly warm and wet for the last month or so and now, just on the verge of it turning cold and snowy again, you're fretting about whether it's going to be "only a few cm". Tell you what, I'll take "only a few cm" over warm and wet weather any day. You're a real "glass is half empty" kind of guy, aren't you?
It's going to snow a decent amount in most places of the alps starting Monday evening/Tuesday morning with some places getting a whole lotta snow and some places only getting a dusting. Hey, that's life.
Oh and, guess what? Yeah, Snow-Forecast don't know how much is gonna fall either. Isn't it exciting?

Here in Gstaad the local forecasts have been A1 correct .... constant drizzle for last 36 hours ( so far) ... all slopes 'destroyed' down to c. 1400m .... and not pretty above that .... above 1500-2000m very heavy and getting thin. I hope carled, is right about the temp drop ...

Raining in Stubai up to 1800 and warm but snowing at 3000 with decent 10 cm of pow but light so flat I generally find it on my bum. Coffee break now as it is the first time I have ever been at 3000 before 9 am

25cm forecast above 1,500m for Cham, high winds (the problem with being high, of course) stopping play in many places. Snow/rain limit now forecast down to 1,300 which is excellent. I have shopping and DIY to do...

Starting to go a little mad, off to Verbier on the 8th and was just starting to relax in the belief that we could be lucky and arrive after a fairly snowy week, only to see alot of the predicted snow disappear on the 06Z run. This snow watching is seriously bad for your heart!!!!!

All I am asking for is a measly 10-15cm, is that to much to ask for? I am now at the stage of snow madness where I am telling myself that I will refrain from looking at any forecasts until at least Tuesday, knowing full well that as soon as I wake up tomorrow the first thing I will do will be to check the Verbier webcams for the slightest hint that a dusting of snow may have occured and then striaght on to GFS to see if has changed for the better. The sooner this holiday is over and I can return to a more productive way of living the better!!!

Stubai glacier closed at 1.30 due to high winds, but it snowed all day and the pow was good although flat light made it interesting. Raining in the valley though so I hope the winds subside

Eastern Switzerland, I think this is good
The next week has lots of cloud and lots of snow symbols next to them on the web site for Flumserberg

Chill the **** out, I was asking a question and not saying that it won't snow for eternity. I don't know how to read forecasts so I was merely asking your opinion if my interpretation was right or not.

Timmaah, the thing is, that the "number of centimetres" of snow is just fairly meaningless, run to run. The actual amount of precipitation likely to fall is extremely difficult to predict, and subject to huge local variation. And the relationship between rainfall amount and snow amount is also not fixed either (ie an inch of rain does not always make 10 inches of snow). How often have you ever heard a UK weather forecast tell you how much rain is going to fall; it's rare, and usually only when severe and unusual rainfall is expected.
The experts on this forum tell us over and over again that:
a. any forecast of the "number of centimetres" of snow should be treated with great caution:
b. variations, run to run, of the "number of centimetres" should be treated with even more caution.
So I suppose they just get a bit fed up with the same questions, over and over again if people never take the trouble to read the answers.
However, that won't stop us looking. And my own empirical observations over 5 seasons have suggested that, more often than not, snow-forecast underestimates snow amounts, at least for our area of the Alps. Every fall of this season, so far, was significantly underestimated. So, fingers crossed.

pam w, precisely. And with 25 cms forecast for yesterday I think we would be lucky if 10cm fell above 2,000m - hey ho. Fingers crossed for snow down to the plain Tuesday and onwards...
Grands Montets lovely higher up and lovely slushy bumps lower down. Some real idiots around skiing beyond "too fast" though.

Just back from Montgenevre/Claviere where the temps were high all last week, as predicted, but there was hee haw snowfall. Only time it looked like it was on Saturday morning when it rained for 20 seconds and snowed for 2. High winds closed all lifts bar 2 at Claviere by mid-day. One thing's for sure, the March 2nd mega-dump that all the models agreed on last week never appeared.
One more important lesson was learned about this weather prediction stuff... Even only 24 hours ahead, it can be wrong.
Looks like good snow for the resorts up here in Scotland today though

Bit of a humour bypass on this thread over the weekend?
FWIW I really value this thread and the free analysis we get on it, particularly from Brian and Carled - delivered with a certain style. I quite like my image of them as grumpy snow trolls who need ego tickling to provide some views on specific locations and timescales, and that by asking those questions you run the risk of castigation for being presumptious to assume weather models tell you anything about specifics.
A bad result would be that they retreat into their caves (cos they're being told to chill the f*** out) and only talk each other on meterological forums and we miss out on all the fun.
Pretty sure they're not that thinskinned though...
