DJL, a week tomorrow is a long way off from a forecasting point of view but it's currently looking mild for that week, which could mean a lovely spring week to enjoy the slopes!

15 cm further up Barbossine this morning and 20cm reported at Planachaux Swiss SLF reporting station.
Nice powder session in the trees first thing- wind had meant some areas were excellent. Then went a bit mild and has now clouded over again and weather closing back in - with more snow expected this pm.
DJL, Farm run home was fun late morning today! Looks like you may bring a high pressure dominated spell on your trip a week tomorrow - if this morning's GFS and ECMWF charts are to be believed.

Apparently the pleney bubble is out today. Currently snowing in LG. Snow was quite nice this morning but I only lasted a couple of runs after a very lazy off piste foray resulted in a sprained wrist and, more restrictively, a lost pole.

Snowing nicely again at 1200m in Chatel - not really got a handle yet on how much this one might bring as a few distractions today - forecast update later.

Snowing quite heavily here in Chatel - though wide range of possibilities for how much we will get - Meteo France again providing very contradictory info on its website.
Here is our take on it...
Chatel Snow Forecast Update 28/02/2014: 6.00pm
It has been snowing quite heavily in Chatel at 1200m late this afternoon and some further snowfall is expected this evening, though it may well become more showery in nature, with drier interludes possible during the evening and tonight. Once again there are some quite big differences between some local forecasts and the various models - for example the Meteo France Chablais bulletin suggests 25cm at 1800m from this snowfall, whereas this time, the Meteo France precipitation forecast and the models are suggesting less than this (13.5cm for the upper mountain according to Meteo France). It does look as though the southern part of Chablais may see more snow (eg Chamonix area) which might explain the difference in these amounts.
So, a very wide range of forecast possibilities for the Chatel area for this evening tonight with between 5cm and 15cm possible at 1200m and between 15cm and 25cm for the upper mountain. As last night's snowfall showed, small changes in the distribution of the areas of snow / snow showers, can make quite a difference to what we receive, so it would be nice if thing's worked out in our favour again tonight.
Further snow is expected in the form of showers during tomorrow, though the timing and distribution of these won't be know until the morning radar images can be viewed. Sunday may be dry, but then there is the chance of yet another snowfall on Monday / Tuesday. Beyond that, in the distant future, high pressure may settle things down for the end of next week - with perhaps a prolonged anticyclonic spell developing.

Pamski, Chatel Snow, thanks both, it wasn't too bad at the time although I was quite shocked at how difficult I found skiing with only one pole, gutted about losing that, it matched my jacket AND my boots It will definitely not stop me skiing but will perhaps stop me from jumping into powder covered bumps with half my mind on how well I'm carving. Pride literally coming before a fall on that one.
Snowing in LG still, would estimate about 5cm. Apparently it's only just started snowing in Morzine after raining for a few hours but it's very wet and not settling.

It has stopped snowing in Chatel - but 13cm on the van roof since 4pm. Be interesting to see if we get any further showers overnight to add to this total.

13 cm's was the overnight total here in Chatel - there has been a few flurries this morning but not amounting to anything. There is some nice powder up there today and as it is Saturday it is quiet though the avalanche risk is considerable to high today.

Been snowing all morning in Champoussin. Completely unscientifically I reckon between 5 and 10 cm. Has stopped about 15 mins ago so might venture out shortly.

8cm the max recorded depth on van roof from this morning's snowfall at 1200m here in Chatel.

HI All , Can anyone advise on how Morzine / Avoriaz /Les Gets is ? Considering a late March trip , so how it is at present base wise may be a factor in deciding ... I , of course realise a lot can happen between now and then ...

Went out and I reckon nearer 10cm than 5 especially higher up. Loose snow but cold and powdery so the incipient moguls were not too hard to ski through. Slopes far less busy than yesterday. Looking forward to better viz and pisted slopes tomorrow

Quick question for PdS locals. I'm staying in Morzine close to Super Morzine bubble and will also have access to a car. If I want to ski in Abondance or La Chapelle I assume it's better/quicker to just drive round than skiing to Chatel and catching a bus? Is the D32 Col du Corbier road usually open or do you have to go up further to the D22 valley road?
Does the same apply if I wanted to ski in say the Barbossine/Super Chatel area or is it about the same to ski via Morgins?
I guess the advantage of driving is that I won't have to rush back to catch a last chair at a particular time.
Any advice much appreciated.

gazatron, It's quite a long way round to Barbossine/Super Chatel via Morgins if you start from Morzine. Quickest way to get there is probably to go up to Avoriaz, ski down to Lindarets, up the Chaux Fleurie chair and ski down to Pre La Joux then get the bus into the centre of Chatel which is very frequent. Getting home would be the reverse of this but so long as you were at Pre La Joux by 16.00 you could get the two chairs up to the ridge between Chatel/Lindarets and then just ski down to the bottom of the Ardent bubble and bus into Morzine.
The bus down to La Chapelle or Abondance from Chatel centre is not very frequent so if you want to ski those areas driving is probably better. Col du Corbier is usually open and a bit quicker than going down to the roundabout and back up the Vallee d'Abondance. It is a twisty mountain road with a few spectacular drops and wouldn't suit everyone especially if there is a layer of snow.

More snow. It was clear first thing - long enough to tempt us over to Les Crosets, but at 10 30 the cloud closed in and visibility was about ten metres. It also didn't help that apparently the pisteurs in Crosets had the night off last night.
Back in Champoussin by 12 and it was clearer, but by 2pm it was snowing again. Still falling now, quite heavily.
edit: at 2 30pm local time it was -3 at the bottom of the village.

Light snow flurries today and some light snow for the last couple of hours - could give us a cm or 2 this evening. After that it looks dry for the next 7 to 10 days - with some beautiful spring weather on the way! Hints in the charts of low pressure trying to move in from the south during next week, but as the position of the high is yet to be established, there is every chance that this could end up being a 2 week dry spell.
Today is the 60th day since 10th October that snow has fallen at 1200m.

I was on this site quite a while ago and only ever posted a couple of times. I have been using it to view the snow reports etc. and it is all very helpful, although very distracting at work. I am flying out on Saturday for 4 days and can't wait. I was in Bulgaria last year and it doesn't really compare. Looks like the pistes are in great condition with the recent snow. Just wanted to say thanks for the reports and looking forward to the weekend.

Any Les Gets locals have a historical perspective on season length? I am potentially bringing the kids out first week of April and i realise its at the low end height wise, but if anyone has past experience I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Blue skies this morning here in Chatel and a few flakes of snow fell overnight. Looks like being a glorious day. The blue skies still look like lasting for at least a week and potentially 10 days to 2 weeks. Increasingly mild on the mountain during the day.

NaturalSelector, I've done that the last few years and am doing it this year. It will likely get slushy close to resort level in the afternoons. Your insurance policy is to buy a PdS pass and get the bus to Prodains in the morning and access higher skiing. I'm not a local though, and someone who is might offer better advice.
|
|
|
|
|
|
NaturalSelector, I was skiing in a foot of very sticky new snow on the 12th April last year, I was back mid May and there was still enough coverage on the pistes at that time, with no work done to it, to allow skiing above about 1400m or so.
I've only skied here the last two seasons in April but the opinion of the locals I know, and shared by me with my limited experience, is that you'll have no worries up the top. I only ski the runs back to resort when I'm going back to resort so it's not a huge consideration for me.

Warm spring sunshine today in Chatel - as it is school hols locally, took the youngster to the Abondance sledging and junior slope this morning which was excellent - especially as it has the only magic carpet in the area. Looking forward to getting back on the Chatel pistes on Monday, when it should be relatively quiet with less of France on holiday.
Shorts and T shirts weather this afternoon on the balcony. More of the same for the next 10 days by the looks of it, with the only uncertainties still regarding whether the high pressure will feed in some cooler air at some stage - otherwise its blue skies, chilly nights and warm or very warm daytime sunshine. GFS is hinting at a snowy breakdown at 12 days out, but that is so far off we will need it to come within the ECMWF 10 day range before it can be taken seriously.

Arrived back in Les Gets early evening - easy drive down with no hold ups - masses of traffic going the other way, all the Belgians, with all the roof boxes must have been going home. Long queue down the mountain as we got up here from Taninges. Mt Chery looking very tempting for tomorrow.

Pamski, we made the same drive down yesterday from Sussex to Montriond but delayed by all the problems at eurotunnel. Looking at perfect blue skies from our apartment in Montriond over morzine and to the top of chaux fleurie. Hoping the large trail of traffic we also saw heading north yesterday means the resort won't be jam packed today.

Pamski, nice to randomly meet you on the lift this morning and hope you enjoyed the rest of the day!
On a weather related front, it's warm enough for me to be wearing a singlet on the lifts between runs and I'm not about to go and sit on the balcony in shorts and do some work. Snow on Mt Chery was hardpacked this morning on the backside and slushy on the front side. Much fun though.

we only tend to use the tunnel in the depths of winter. We were able to be well set up for the journey with a huge breakfast in the brasserie and were third car off.
MeMyselfandI, and good to finally meet you too. We had skied the front and down the Lievre many times before meeting you and before it went slushy so a bit of hardpack stuff was then a welcome change. Took the gondola down just before 1 and have now come in from roasting on the balcony to do a bit more unpacking.
Seemed to be lots of people around but never a queue longer than a couple of people right in front of us.

Sunny and very warm in the daytimes here in Chatel - summer like rather than springlike!
Next snowfall still approximately 10 days away.

I'm due to arrive in Morzine on Tuesday and all this talk of spring like weather is a little worrying?
What are the conditions likely to be like, I'm presuming I'll still be able to ski for most of the day? I'm also guessing I would be better served heading to Avoriaz?
At least I'll not have to wrap up like an eskimo as I did last year. It was so cold my phone stopped working despite being in an internal pocket next to my chest!

shoosk, it's hot! That said the snow depth is pretty good and even the runs down to Morgins from Super Chatel were OK today if a little soft.
We did a day from the Barbossine lift. No queues anywhere in the Super Chatel/ Morgins area and pistes well prepared though suffering in the sun.
Five hour ski ticket followed by a few beers in the Avalanche watching the rugby. Great atmosphere and the right result!
Looks like early starts and picnic lunches for the rest of the week.
