Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Trains run all year round and are very reasonable if you have a student railcard

As a non-student with no kids, there's little chance of me getting a railcard till I retire in 30 years Sad

And well in advance is not what you do for Scottish skiing. I always end up driving, even though it seems stupid. With 2 people it is cheaper and gives you much more flexibility (you can ski all day and drive home into the night) and you can go to more than one centre.

Had a poke at the ScotRail website, using connections and the sleeper (seated coach) you can get a £113 off-peak return (searched from Huddersfield) leaving Friday 10pm and arriving back at 7am Monday.

If you have a Student / 16-15 Railcard, it's £75 for a open offpeak return.

If the forecast holds with high pressure slap bang on top of us for the weekend it could be shorts, tees and shades time! Cool

^White Lady still looking good to the mid-station of the Funicular.

^CairnGorm from Loch Morlich. Traverse, 105, Coire Cas, Gunbarrel, Coronation Wall and Headwall looking good for mid-week tourers.

We are go for the 4th Weekend of May! despite the inevitable resumption of the spring thaw with the much milder then warm weather this week there is still Top to Middle riding on offer giving 1300ft of vertical.

There is a crew working on shaping and resetting the Ptarmigan Terrain Park (See video from last weekend, http://www.winterhighland.info/blog/) this afternoon, so it should have similar features to last week. There is still a wide cover in the Ptarmigan Bowl and though the snow is retreating off open slopes, still a big expanse to play on skiers right of the Ptarmigan Tow.

Traverse, 105 and Coire Cas should be pisted this afternoon. Uplift will be the Ptarmigan Tow for the Top Basin and the Funicular for the middle slopes. The White Lady is complete to the mid-station and the bumps will be somewhat mellower after the mid-week warm weather for the first runs on Saturday. Access to the Lady could be a bit of an adventure, unless it's now possible to get under the Funicular Track at the underpass - you'd have struggled to crawl under it last week!

For those with touring kit a huge variety of options abound still, there is huge cover on the Plateau for high level touring with lots of long snow fields to lower levels. Yesterday it was reportedly possible for tourers to go from the foot of the White Lady to Ben Macdui with just one brief skis off bit near the summit of CairnGorm.

Cloud has been coming and going today, there was some bright and sunny spells earlier, but it's overcast at the moment but the cloud base is well above the summits, so visibility and light is good. The forecast is for the cloud to break up more extensively on Saturday, but an outside risk of sporadic late afternoon thunderstorms - something to keep an eye on if going on long tours on the high tops.

It's currently overcast and +20c at the mid-station. Wax your planks and look out your shorts. Cool

Wow!! That is what spring snowsports is all about, what a fantastic day of amazing spring snow on CairnGorm Mountain on Saturday. A day that was shorts and t-shirts weather from the moment you stepped out of the car.

Despite the hot weather this week there remains top to middle riding and 1300ft of vertical descent. The mid mountain was skiing beautifully on Saturday, the White Lady was fantastic from the off with sublime granular spring snow. Last weekend everyone was commenting on how the surface conditions had picked up from the weekend before, well on Saturday, the surface conditions had taken another step up.

Photos are now up on Winterhigland from today, a photo that sums it up:

Amusing to think now, 33 pages later and one of the longest threads in this section, that this was the opening comment in this thread:

It has been an immense season for Scotland.

I hope they manage atleast one day's official liftserved skiing in June.

Then they should market the cr*p out of how skiing was possible in Scotland from Oct to Jun, for an 8-month season.

And how their 700cm of snowfall was perhaps the most in all of Western Europe last season.

And hopefully they'll also pull their finger out and get installing more snowguns.

I agree with you Whitegold, but somehow i dont feel they will do. They also need to reinstate the chair lifts at cairngorm, t-bars and pomas are not fun, the odd chair would make it a lot easier!!! An 8 month ski season in Scotland, jesus that is amazing if it could happen, i dont see why not!!!

Was up at Cairngorm on Saturday with my son. Was expecting a quiet day messing around on Ptarmigan in the sun, or doing some spring bumps. What we got was lap after lap of Coronation Wall on perfect spring snow - about 1500ft vertical from CG summit to middle station (with some bonus bumps in the gunbarrel). Absolutely amazing and a bargain at £30 for the two of us.

Exactly as we found it - incredible. In fact one of our best ever days on Scottish snow. There had been a lot of snow lost from the previous weekend so we're hoping the thaw might have slowed a bit this week with the cooler temperatures.

I wish the Gorm website would give an indication of whether this wekend is a possible goer (or non-starter) - we need to start making plans! Anyone heard any whispers Puzzled

It is no good having a shiny new chairlift on a green piste.

They need to wire up some snowfans and get blasting rightaway.

mountainaddict, with the forecast as is, it should definitely be a goer, nick over to Colin's blog (see link at top of homepage) and drop him a line, or keep an eye on winterhighland. Col has said they'll keep going as long as they can (snow lasting and punter demand - looks like they're still riding their luck on both counts too)

Ricklovesthepowder, did you make it up in the end? you had the nails chewed off at one point a few weeks back!

Whitegold, they've kept the fan they acquired temporarily this past season - it got fired up for a laugh a couple of afternoons a few weeks ago (it was buried the rest of the winter I think!)

The 'Gorm is scheduled to open this weekend, Sat, Sun and Monday (Bank Holiday). There should be very little thawing this week in the Ptarmigan Bowl. As of 8pm Tuesday evening the Traverse, 105, Coire Cas and Gunbarrel were still skiable to the mid-station and the White Lady though very narrow by the elephant fence for a bit is still complete to the mid platform (apart from the section where you had to walk around the top of the tunnel last weekend).

Weather permitting and baring some meteorological catastrophe not currently forecast the Ptarmigan Tow will spin. Whether there is middle stops on the Funicular will be assessed later in the week, it will be a safety call on whether the Gunbarrel is deemed safe or not - which lard ass is owning up to making a large circular hole 50yards from the bottom on Sunday? Laughing

People are pushing for the Monday opening to stretch to Tuesday to make it into June - it would suck to open on the 31st, then wait till the weekend and not be able to open and have missed the chance to spin the Ptarmigan Tow in June!

For those willing to do a little leg work to earn some more turns (and to co-ordinate a car left in the Ciste Carpark), this was the Ciste Gully about 7pm on Tues 25th, still complete to the boardwalk level.
