Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The White Lady was looking fantastic for some spring sliding ahead of the weekend this evening.

The Funicular, Cas Tow, Ptarmigan Tow, Ciste Tow and M1 Poma are scheduled to run Saturday and Sunday. Latest meso-scale model data suggests wind will be less of a feature than forecast earlier in the week for Saturday (now 15 gusting 30mph), becoming light and variable for Sunday. Still 1300ft of lift served vertical on offer including steeper stuff on the White Lady and Coronation Wall.

Great cover in the Ptarmigan Bowl with the Top Basin greens in good condition and the Ptarmigan Terrain Park has reportedly had a fair bit of work the past couple of days, 3 take offs on the huge kicker and 4 rails/boxes in place for the weekend.

Sorry I couldn't catch up with folk last weekend, had been laid low (more like knocked out) by a virus going around that had the sort of effects on my insides that will have sorely tested the sewage works Shocked

On the BBC world weather website, under their 'Country Guides' I have just come across the following in relation to the UK:

"The greatest extremes of weather and climate in Britain occur in the mountains of Scotland, Wales, and northern England. These are among the wettest places in Europe. Winter conditions may be severe with very strong winds, driving rain, or snow blizzards. In spite of occasional heavy snowfalls on the Scottish mountains, conditions are not really good for skiing and there has been only a limited development of winter sports resorts."Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Wholly inaccurate and nothing short of disgraceful!! A perpetuation of the continued myth - and by the BBC of all people! I am currently looking for an e mail address to make a complaint.

mountainaddict, Outrageous!

My e-mail complaint has winged its way to the Beeb. I have pointed out the innacuracies:
1.'Conditions are not really good for skiing' - Namely that, on any given day between December and April (and often longer), there WILL be sufficient snow for skiing at one or more of the 5 Scottish centres.
2. 'There has only been a limited development of ski areas' - ie five areas with up to 40km of pistes - which is on a par with several smaller Alpine areas.

I have suggested that it would be more correct to say: "Heavy snowfalls on the Scottish mountains mean that skiing is usually available between December and April - and sometimes longer. The UK's maritime climate means that the ski areas can be affected by Atlantic depressions, with high winds being a particular problem."

Here's the original page, which I meant to include earlier:

Sitting in the Sun by the Cas Carpark just now, uploaded a small selection of photos already to Winterhighland. Fantastic afternoon of May riding today on CairnGorm, mostly dry with light Northerly winds and sunny spells expected Sunday - Get up here if you can, summer is long enough!

^M1 Poma doing it's thing on Saturday 8th May. snowHead

5 Lifts, Funicular, Coire Cas T-bar, Ciste T-bar, Ptarmigan T-bar and the M1 Poma run Sat, same expected Sunday. 1300ft of lift served vertical with a selection of green, blue and red terrain on offer, plus the off-piste steeps of the Coronation Wall, Headwall had some tracks too.

What happens during the week when skiing is supposedly closed. Do they forbid skis on the funicular? How much of that is un-skiable?

they wont stop mid station for you and with no other tows running you would need to walk from the mid station down, the stupid closed policy might also prevent you from getting on the train with skis when the skiing is officially closed but im not 100% sure on that, either way it's a longish walk each lap

If the mid-station is actually "mid" it might be simpler to skin up. You'd have to be very keen to do that.

nbt, I think it was me that you spoke to on the Monday. Sorry for keeping the distance between us - the camp facilities in the mountains were a bit basic and i hadn't washed for a few days Embarassed
The guy I was touring with skis with Snowball, I believe. I also recalled someone on here wanting to ski Aladdins, I enquired as we might have offered to take them down if they were about. We skied Diagonal Gully, amongst other descents, a few days earlier and the snow was pretty good all the way down to the bottom of Loch Avon. The gully adjacent to Diagonal - i forget its name, towards Coire Domhain, looked skiable down to Loch level as well. Check out the Winterhighland backcountry reports, including ours(!) to check out for snow conditions off the beaten track.

Could well have been me - though can't remember if I enquired on here or Winterhighland Confused. Anyway, whichever site, one of the typically witty responses I got when I asked "How do I find Aladdin's Couloir?" was "Buy a map" (or similar) - on the basis that it's named on the OS map.

Well I may be being blind/thick but I just can't see it on my 25,000 scale Cairngorms map. Will I find it with Tom Tom?? Serously, er, where is it Puzzled ??

CairnGorm Mountain is primed for the weekend, after a cool week that saw little change in cover mid-mountain and more fresh up Top, it's time to wax your toy(s), chuck them in the car and head for the 'Gorm for the third weekend of May!

Still top to middle riding offering up 1300ft of vertical with a selection of green, blue and red terrain open and lift served, plus the off-piste Coronation Wall - a good portion of which is accessible from a traverse of the Ptarmigan Tow. Terrain Park crew have been working on the Ptarmigan Terrain park all day, should have 2 easy low set box rails for those park newbies, several more difficult rails, a variety of rollers (more on the Ptarmigan Traverse) and 3 huge kickers that were used for the Dawn of the Shred comp.

This was the Ptarmigan Bowl mid-week, full on winter scene:

This is the Ptarmigan Bowl today, looking great for the weekend:

Funicular, Ptarmigan and Ciste Tows definite. Cas Tow should run, M1 Poma uptrack required some work and will need to be assessed each morning, but all being well there should be 5 lifts on offer. Come get some, summer is long enough!

Hope to be up on Sunday but I'd better remember to slow down on that wide, open, straight stretch of the A9 with no farm tracks or other roads joining in it 2 miles north of the Dalwhinnie junction. rolling eyes Got the letter from Tain yesterday referring to the 'safety' camera van's 'video-graphic evidence' from 2 Sunday's ago. Embarassed Northern Constabulary really are making the world a much safer place. Evil or Very Mad

Running an 11 mile, 4,000 footer tomorrow so hope I've still got the legs for skiing and the sun's still shining. It could well turn out to be the last lift-served day if the expected warmth arrives next week.

A simply amazing late Spring Day on the 'Gorm today. Whether taking it easy in the Ptarmigan Bowl, thrashing mid-mountain bumps on the White Lady and Gunbarrel, laying out carves on Coronation Wall or the Headwall or joining those that went off in search of steeper and tighter lines in Sneachda, there's still something for all.

Think this photo sums up the day nicely, the White Lady was simply skiing beautifully from start to finish:

^CairnGorm Mountain's Endless Winter - The White Lady Sat 15th May 2010.

Some steeper tracks on the Cas Headwall:
