some aren't much good in the first place, and none of them is much good without loads of tread. |
But a low quality winter tyre is still going to be significantly better than a decent summer tyre in conditions like we have today. I bought the cheapest Asian winter tyres I could find recently (new car meant budget was tight) and they were brilliant today. Absolutely no problems with traction, when many, many cars struggled to make progress up the hill.

rob@rar, I bought a full set of Continentals, which really hurt the budget, as I had just paid for two new tyres, fully expecting them to be the M&S type (no snowflake) which have been fiine in the past. Turned out they were only Chelsea tractor tyres, so I choked and forked out for the winter ones when the garage said we needed to replace two more.

i had a discovery last year and that was great going up the mountains.
This year the front wheel drive volvo with winter tyres has been nearly as good going up the mountain and with snow chains seems to be able to get up anything. Got up to Val Thorens on Saturday morning very easily. It would have been fine just with the winter tyres to be honest.
