For those who don't speak Kraut -
Ischgl will open at whatever the cost (est to be circa €1 million for the artificial snow). Pistes were green last week but cannons have been running 24/7 and the pistes will be made with 100% artificial snow for the Nov opening. Such a snow opening snow drought at Ischgl has not happened for over 20 years.

Here's an early review of the weather in Nov for Austria from zamg.
http://www.zamg.ac.at/aktuell/index.php?seite=1&artikel=ZAMG_2011-11-25GMT12:17
Confirming what you probably know already, in that Nov was very very dry and a distinct temp inversion persisted. I know in schladming there's been no rain or snow since late October, just unbroken sunshine. This weekend looks to hold some promise, lets hope so.

Really surprized that Lackenhof opens before Obertauern - suppose the lower temps in the East have enabled them to run the canons.

Yes, this is the result of the temperature inversion of the past week. They were able to use their snowguns.
The lift company in Obertauern had their meeting on opening today and decided to stay close for the weekend. Their planned opening is Dec 7, Wednesday.
And speaking of other resorts close to you. Hochkar and Semmering also postponed their openings to December 8 and 9.

Timmaah, Me too, but I'm sure we'll find plenty to do and at least the crowds won't be around. Watched the webcam for Hintertux on Sunday, looked really good.

We're off out there in the New Year have they got anything yet?
At least there is the back up plan of the glacier but a bit of a pain in the behind

After failing to find any snow in Portugal last week, I returned to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier yesterday. On the way there I stopped briefly by the Areitbahn I lift in Zell am See. There the snow cannons were going full blast. I asked at the ticket desk when they expected to open the lifts but the lady didn't want to commit herself: "It depends on the snow and the weather," she said, so I suppose we're not much wiser. Although they have laid down some snow, it is hardly skiable yet...
At the Kitzsteinhorn things were much as they had been a fortnighht ago, blue, cloudless skies (though a little more wind at times). Pretty quiet again, with less training groups but more school classes on the slopes. An RAF snowboard team were there, without aircraft but getting plenty air I think!
A couple more lifts were running, the old 2-seater Sonnenkarbahn, which didn't add much, but also one of the the T-bars to the Maurer glacier. This opened up an interesting new run, easy enough at the start, though moderately steep - here the view from the top...
But at the bottom there is a narrow gully which was mostly ice - hard going, I found...
Impressive piste bashers were busy grooming a second Snowpark just above the Alpincenter...
All in all, a good day's skiing.

How were the pistes, were they kind to the skis? (i.e. few stones or brown patches) |
The pistes were fine. A few little gravelly stones here and there but even on the track back over from the Schmiedinger piste, where I had expected some stones, there was nothing that worried me. The occasional larger stones were easy to miss.

linseymcd, Welcome.
espri, Cheers for pictures. Interesting to see the Schmittenhoehe prepared to make snow right down to the valley. They must be confident of at least there being no thaw?
Alastair Pink, Hope it doesnt get that close?!
We are off the ZamS on the 27th Dec, Don't normally go that early in season although we did in 2007 and there was plenty snow, even the lake was frozen solid enough to walk on.
This year I have my Sister and BinL and two small nephews coming from Singapore for a UK Xmas and a week in the Alps. A few weeks ago I had dared to hope for a white Xmas and a winter wonderland in Austria. I know there's plenty time yet but I wish to c****t it would a least start!

Timmaah, No, family trip, better a trip to the snow than christmas at home, and that's just what the kids say. Mixed group of boarders and skiers. Remember a couple of years ago being told no snow anywhere in the whole of the alps, spent every day skiing for ten days. Mind you we do drive out and so can travel daily to where the snow is.
RetroBod, Same happened to me on my first ever trip, arrived at dusk in the pissing rain, woke up to more snow than you could shake a stick at.
