I am going to Les Arcs 2000 with a group on 13th December so am glued to this post. Thanks especially for any 'white' photos - I've been getting nervous. I've been looking at lift pass prices. There seems to be a premiere neige price of 150 euros for Les Arcs but no premiere neige price advertised for the one that gives a day in La Plagne or the Paradiski pass. Is it easy to upgrade to go to La Plagne if the link is open? |
Vanoise isn't opening until the 19th so not much point in you buying a full pass!!

Hello all. I'm also arriving in les arcs (2000) on the 13th of December. Relieved to see the good stuff is finally here!
I have a few questions for the brains of les arcs, if you could oblige.
Is there absolutely no movement on the lift over to la plagne or will they open it early if the conditions allow?
Also does anybody know of any good qualified ski instructors that would be able to give personal tuition to the other half who is an itermediate?
Where is the best place to hire equipment?
Many thanks!

90% definitely not - given there's probably no more than 1000 people (max) skiing les arcs that week it's just not cost-effective for the lift-co. You could always arrange a taxi there/back if you really need to ski the other domain. You will find that not all lifts will be open in Les Arcs on the first day you get out too, but might open porgressively during the week (depending on conditions) - it was still one of the best weeks of last season (IMHO!)

John Thomas from Ski New Gen is fantastic, but last year their programme didn't kick off until the 20th. I'd try Spirit 1950 which generally gets good press on Snowheads, although I don't know a specific instructor to try - http://www.spirit1950.com/en/ seems to be running from the 13th too.

The one nearest your accommodation!! Never rented from there so can't help, but Frosty the Snowman will probably be along in a minute.
Take the other half for a special lunch at Chalet De L'arc (up the hill from 2000 just down from top of Marmottes) - lovely!!

Another week, a new update.
A little snow has started to fall and as genepi, says they have started the Arpette webcam at last. The list of lifts to open the first week has not changed from my earlier post so going to the Arc 2000 bowl should be ok. But it needs to snow a lot more to be able to get back to any of the other stations. Not much chance of doing that right now. All the work on the lifts they plan to open this season is nearly complete, and they are hoping to get the canons working if it starts to get colder. If I hear anything else worth posting I will add it here at the weekend.
bertie bassett, sometimes you do make me chuckle. 1000 people max in a week skiing. Where do you get these facts. Sorry mate had to have a laugh. Last season there were a lot more than that in resort during the first week. But it is a big place so they do disappear quite well. This year it will be the second week and due to film festival the week before there is sure to be even more people around.
tillywhim, Not much chance they will open the link as everyone works to contracts and they have already made the official start date the 19th no matter how much it snows before the link will not open early, but we can always HOPE! They will be posting a list of what lifts are open the second week soon, when they do I will put a copy here. Right now still not much snow around so we had better start the snow dance or we will be skiing on grass down to most stations. One of my friends tried to go touring last weekend but said it was a waste of time.
brandonski, Welcome to our little thread. who are you working for and where are you based. More important, I will be out from the 5th when the lifts open for the season so if you fancy meeting for a beer PM me.
Poshlad, you can rent gear from a number of places in Arc 2000. Check out the skiset link on the les arcs web site as they normqlly have the best discounts for online booking in advance. Also ski republic as they were planning to open a shop in Arc 2000, but I do not know if they have yet. I think the skiset shop in Arc 2000 is either called Intersport or Sport 2000 now, but it is easy to check anyway. For ski schools, there are some very good Instructors at the Arc 2000 ESF who speak English. Vincent if he is still with them is an older guy, speaks great English and will give private lessons. There are a number of others but as it is only the second week, hard to say right now who has returned this season until I get there and check it out. Spirit 1950 are also very good sometimes!!, like all these ski schools it depends who you get. My advice, send both schools an email now telling them what you need and see what they offer you. If you PM me after the 5th when I am in resort I should have some better info by then.
That's all the news I have for now. How is the training going in the snowdomes. I heard some of you are already having a little slid.

I'm heading down on the 13th for the season with the misses,
We are staying in Moulin, which is just down the hill from Vallandry, anyone know what the pistes are like on that side?? Also, will we be alright getting over to Arc 1950e etc...? Any advice appreciated!
I've only done a week in this resort so would be interested to find out good routes, off piste run etc...
Cheers guys

Dry Boy, Could be argued that the best skiing in the resort is above Valandry, as well as the easiest black in the Alps.
You'll have to catch the (free) bus to the bottom of the lobster pots to get up to the Peisey lift. You might be able to ski right back if the conditions are 'bad' enough though .
Have a look at Bertie Bassets Blog loads of stuff there.

Allanm - Yeah thats the place, we stayed in Moulin last year, it's not too far to the lobster pots,
My misses refused for the fiirst to days to do the easiest "black" run in the alps because she thought it was going to be like "Le Face" in Tignes/Val
I'll check out the run back if we get enough of the white stuff cheers!

Dry Boy, Good to hear you are also out for the season. Moulin is ok but a bit away from where others are based. Like allanm, says, the lobsters are your link to the main lifts and if you have good snow you should be able to ski home for a while after the snow comes. Getting over to 1950 or any other bits of Les Arcs is easy just head to the middle station of Transarc and go over to the Arc 2000 bowl and ski down. After ski lifts close you are not really able to get anywhere else but your village unless you use your car as Moulin is quite a way out and the buses stop quite early. One big plus you do have is you can ski back from the La Plagne side to where you live as well as from the Les Arcs side without coming back on the Vanoise link. But you do need to learn the route to avoid walking. It is therefore well worth you getting the full Paradiski lift pass. If you fancy meeting up for a beer sometime or even a ski/board let me know. And off course you need to try the Villaroger Challenge.

snowcrazy - What is this challenge? Ive read about it, but my knowledge of the mountain is not great as i spent a week riding blind only checking a map at the end of the day when I need to get back over to Vallandry! We chose Moulin because we stayed in a catered chalet there last year and the people who run the chalet had rooms to rent in their house. The big bonus is all mod cons included sky, broadband etc...and space. The only thing me and the misses could afford on our own was one of those pokey little studios!
Where are you staying?? Be good to hook up as me and the misses aren't going to be working so would be good ot meet up with new people and get to know the area!
A few questions!
How long do you think it would take to walk home from Vallandry?
Where do most people base themselves?
What time do the buses stop running?
Cheers

Dry Boy,
Vallandry to Moulin is downhill all the way, prob about 3K's .. 3/4 hour perhaps...
Me... The Mont Blanc (pub), don't know about others.
Buses finish at about midnight Mon-Fri and just after 6 at the W/E - Yup, less at W/E. The late buses don't all go through Moulin, but you can get off at the Nancriox 'turnoff' and walk back to Moulin, probably not more than 1/2 K.

Not sure how open Peisey Vallandry will be till the 19th. I've just found this - with the comment at the bottom in french saying opening between 12th & 18th depends on conditions. Somewhere it ruled out Grizzly & Coombes opening before 19th. I seem to remember in previous years, Les Arcs opening a week earlier then Peisey Vallandry.

Dry Boy, If you're a boarder then drop into the flying squirrel for an apres beer - go to the bottom of the new blue piste in Plan-Peisey - Poney and unstrap and walk down the road. When you see a parade of shops then you're looking for the shop next to the sport 2000 - as it's a bar. The guys working behind the bar this season are all boarders and all have done 1 or more seasons in the area. I'm sure they'd be happy to ride with you guys. There's usually quite a good apres vibe in there (might take a few weeks to get warmed up) and there's a bus stop at the end of the car-park no more than 100 yds away.
Definitely worth hooking up with Snowcrazy too as he knows the area very well indeed, and provided you're up to it can show you some fabulous off-piste runs. The challenge is in my signature - if you look at the piste map it's bottom left of the map, Villaroger to bottom right, Montalbert and back again. Good fun on a quiet saturday, can be pretty well nigh impossible mid-week at Parisien 1/2 term holidays

@Poshlad - there's a great instructor in my village called Christophe who is Ecole du Ski Francais but generally does one on one lessons with established clients. He's our neighbour and a lovely bloke. We live down beneath 1800 halfway to Bourg, but he'd do lessons in 2000. My mum is a decent intermediate and always takes a lesson from him. He's got very good English. The only downside is he can be too chatty and if you invite him round for dinner, he will be more than happy to sit up drinking and talking until the wee small hours. Not that this is necessarily a problem! PM me and I will send you details.
All - is anyone out w/c 20th Dec over Christmas? I'm skiing with my mum and her fella. They're late 60s so I'm likely to get a little bored and would love a good day of skiing. Not sure there is much prospect for off piste that early in the season, so the Villaroger challenge sounds interesting. Anyone care to elaborate? Am guessing it means doing the whole domain in a day like the 3 vallees challenge?
Cheers,
JimF

Nope, no pubs in the village, infact I didnt see anything in the village, that said Greg's bar is just down the road in Peisey (I think thats the village) but it is only about 5-10 minutes walk.
We used the Mont Blanc Bar for apres ski and the guys from the chalet would pick us up at 6ish, if not there is a bus stop right outside of the chalet that picks up in Vallandry/Plan Peisey so you'll be fine for a few beers!
Theres a facebook group for the chalet, if your a memeber!
