My mate told me on Friday that his (farmer) father is selling lambs at the moment at over £100 a head to the French whereas traditionally he used to be lucky to get £40. Some people are benefitting, but it is playing havock with the love life of the locals
Reminds me I must start listing stuff on US ebay

...The reasons to be negative on the pound are stacking up,” says Melinda Burgess at Royal Bank of Scotland......The risk now is that the UK will be left behind in the global economic recovery and interest rates will be on hold for longer than most, despite the stubborn inflation environment.....Sterling headwinds are just getting stronger and stronger
Quote:
But some analysts say that there could be a bright side to the pound’s weakness. Mr Wood-Smith says that while the result of a weaker pound will be higher UK inflation and gilt yields, it will on balance be good for the UK economy and good for UK investors. “We can look forward to enhanced returns from overseas markets and from another rise in our own domestic share prices,” he says “Everything may be a tad overbought just at the moment and due a pause for breath, but the prospects for the next six months for UK equities are getting brighter by the day.”
If you have some cash sloshing around, now might be a good time to buy the currency you need for skiing.

achilles,
A I said before... I found it ok-ish to live with 1.35 chf, so 1.8 will be sheer joy...
JT, must admit I would probably buy currency were I not in the early stages of buying a house. £1= ChF1.67 today, according to the FT. If you are saying there are (ahem) place in Switzerland that are very good value indeed, I agree with you.

achilles,
last time I looked the £ was closer to 1.8...
Now if Brown would do the decent thing, then the £ might get a boost

Now that would be a selfless act purely in the interests of the country.
So, it's not going to happen then.

Already dropped just today by 3 cents on the dollar today and 1.5 cent on the euro
Some small ski TO's are looking at big problems again for next season unless Brown does the right thing and bug off before Xmas. But as we all know politicians never do what’s good for the country just what’s good for them

There is still Switzerland - not such a dire exchange rate situation. Don't tell anyone on this forum though
it did'nt look good yesterday when I checked. down from 1.83 to 1.65 in a week..From past experience though currency seems to bounce quite often so fingers crossed.

Hmmm - saw some guy on the news this morning saying that Italy must be at least 50% more expensive than a year ago. Was he implying that Italy (and/or the Eurozone) has 20%+ inflation in addition to the 30% drop in exchange rates from whichever peak they are using as the comparison point for media purposes?
Still I like this exchange rate - Gave me a cheaper Christmas last year than I had expected, and the bank transfer I used for s5BB was at a pretty good rate too Just re-costed a bike I've been considering (but can't justify)... just gone down by £400

andy, FWIW, I am planning for 2 out of my 3 skiing weeks to be in Switzerland. Even so, I might hedge my costs by buying some ChF soon.

A ringing endorsment on Brown, then..????
So, nobody in this country rates him, the europeans laugh at him, the Americans tolerate him, at best, and all the time Rome burns..
Where is that Manse sense of moral compass now...???? where it has always been..up his back bottom...!!
Hopefully, the delegates will do the decent thing and out him, as this can't just be allowed to drag on just so he finishes his term...
He was never bequeathed a term by the electorate anyway...
You know it makes sense.

Oh bother... having paid the co-prop and run out of the Euros originally purchsed at 1.16 ( which was bad enough), my Tax Fonciere arrived this morning, another bloody grand.

Bookings will help the cash flow, and most are from outside the Uk this year. New Zealanders, French and Belgians, and more enquiries from Sweden. Only a couple of weeks booked to Brits.

Anyway I'm off to trash the CHF, my wages have come in and I'm going to buy my EUR tonight.

Whilst the Bank of England continues it's policy of quantitive easing to help stimulate growth in the UK economy sterling will continue to fall against the euro & to a lesser extent against the US dollar. Basically in the most simplistic terms they're printing more money therefore the pound is not worth as much. At the current rate of decline predictions are that the pound will reach parity with the euro some time around christmas. The only thing that is going to stop this happening is a miraculous recovery in the UK economy which seems unlikely looking at global indicators. So folks you're either going to have to suck it up/look for cheaper places or not go to euro zone ski areas.
the boe and the govmnt will be more thns happy with parity with the euro in the current zero inflation enviroment,, the uk had used a crafty deval to get out of the economic mire more times than gordon brown has talked bull shoite..
