Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

the incredible silence tree skiing in powder

the rare moments when you traverse round a shoulder or boot over a coll and you are on your own

chairlift tension - you are just willing the thing up the mountain as you see people starting to cut up YOUR powder field

the magic dust you occasionally get when after really cold powder, thermals cause tiny flakes to float up sparkling in the sunshine

smoothly cruising between the crowds on the last run down, beer beckoning

assiette montagnard avec frites et un grande bierre

Skiing on a road that still open to traffic after a run through the trees on a heavy snow day takes some beating, especially last run at twilight.

Less bizarre is closing my eyes on the chair up and hearing the hiss of heavy snow, and the deadened sound from close by - anticipation...

Watching my ten year old son (who is hopeless at team sports and ball games) ski down the last run of the day at speed, holding his poles on his head like antlers, to his innocent delight.

Watching the look on my wife's face as our eight year old daughter talked to her - while skiing fakie so as to do so.

Sitting in a hot-tub while it snows on you (I know that's an "I like snow" but it is an odd one).

The crunchy squeek that snow makes.

The excitement that spreads through a lift line as news comes through that a bowl full of powder at the top has just been opened by the ski-patrol.

Waking up to the sound of explosions and knowing that it is a powder day.

Enjoying the music played by the lifties that I would never listen to the rest of the year.

Smokin Joe, there must be a reason why that stuff arrives in a test tube rack. Have you ever taken a bottle home? It's odd how it tastes amazing when half-cut in the Windsor Bar, but get it home and it becomes something beyond vile. Much like Ouzo does when it escapes from its Greek island.

Being the only one still working in the rain on Christmas Day - decidedly odd.

Being the only one still teaching on the upper mountain as the lifts are about to close due to high winds. And seeing all of the beginners I was teaching that day back for more the next day, still in terrible weather.

Going around saying "lovely weather for ducks"!

Watching the line of tail lights leaving the resort, and knowing you can't get home for at least 2 hours.

Hearing that Caltrans have closed I-80.

Things I like (although many of you have already named some of mine):

The fact that you have to forget your woes, whatever they may be, because if you don't you will hurt yourself

I reckon you see more hoodies (the garment, not the social classification) in ski resorts. But the hoodies are worn by laid back skiers or snowboarders who are more likely to say 'hows it going' than 'what the f*** are you looking at'.

Only travelling a few miles from the airport before you encounter snow in the valley
Sitting in a hot tub by Lake Tahoe looking up at the mountains

what a great thread this is snowHead

My quirky favourites....
Being woken by the sound of chains clinking on the huge caterpilar tractors they use to clear the roads in a resort
The beep-beep sound of the pistenbullys after the lifts close
The silent magic of a 50cm dump of snow and how it transforms everything
The angry hiss of the snow cannons above your head and the pricks of the crystals on your skin as you shuss through them
the hollow metallic sound of pomas returning to the bottom station
The sound of the Darty advert which usually preceeds a weather report when the room falls silent and everyone waits for the word neige
The inconvenience of having to fit chains to go any further snowHead
That feeling when a detachable chair comes off the slow speed loop round the lift station and runs down to meet the high speed cable
The crack of the doors on a gondola letting you out so you can hit the slopes again
The roar from the wind past your ears when you drop into a tuck
Being on your own in a whiteout and all you can hear is that flumpy sound of nothing
The smell of a raclette....which i can say is awesome as I sit writing this and having just finished one snowHead

Crouched beside the road up from Chambery, fitting snowchains on a very snowy dark evening, hearing a creaking noise, looking up to see a farmer heaving open the door to the cowshed, feeling the hot smelly rush of air and thinking "I'm back in the mountains".

Reliving that moment every time I've driven past the spot since.

Driving through the tunnel on the autoroute where the landscape on the entry side is green and rolling and on the exit side is suddenly stark and mountainous - I can never remember which tunnel it is, so every tunnel is an 'Is this it?'

When it is just the three of us,(small and cheap apartment) the first meal conjured up on facilities marginally better than a camping stove........and at least the camping stove has a constant power supply!

The same dodgy meal at the same dodgy restaurant by the same formula 1 that we always end up in on the way down.

The occasional thrill when the french sentence I've carefully prepared, comes out my mouth in the same way as it was constructed in my head and isn't met with a complete look of baffled lack of understanding by the recipient.......or the gales of laughter when I get it spectaculalry wrong.

The feeling this morning when a padded envelope came through the door containing our season passes even though we can't use them for a month.

The smell of my skiing gloves. Wierd I know, I guess its an association thing. I wore them at Twickenham on Saturday and that smell was the highlight of the afternoon! Confused

Ski shop window displays. The lighting on the brightly coloured kit makes it look so tempting. If I was minted, I could blow fortunes on ski gear in resort.

First run down on freshly groomed piste which is still frozen solid. Really wakes you up and blows away the cobwebs from the night before.

Seeing "crocodiles" of tiny kids snaking down the slopes. More so this year as hopefully my little boy will be in one...

Sitting outside to eat and drink in temperatures that mean you probably wouldn't even walk to the pub in England, never mind sit ouside it!

Ooo......No.............still not keen on that. That sort of surface wrecked my ski race in VT. Everyone watching and me knowing I could make a passable job of it in snow that skis could dig into, and it turns out to be this rock hard corduroy that you couldn't mark with a hammer and chisel and that made a hellish noise when you skied over it. Next year rearrange the race order - Good skiers first whilst its still rock hard - give the beginners next year a break.
