Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Day two of the seminar in Hanazono.

'The Legend of' Shinya spoke this morning re: the 'Niseko Rules' and gate access.

And then we went out skiing the bluebird pow.

Both Andy and I demoed the new K2 Backside line for 2009/10. Some great skis in there, all mounted with Dukes and with an innovative skin system.

But being depth whores we both preferred the new Explorer all-mountain ski that will have the Duke binding next winter.

I've been avoiding this thread since I got back, but couldn't resist a peek. Good to see Niseko's still turning it on, and conditions looking even better than when I was there.

Thanks for the tips you gave me in Paddy McGirty's, Mike Pow. Your advice paid immediate dividends over the remaining two days I had left on the slopes.

No new snow, but no rain either.

It's grey and the wind is kicking in. A few flurries in the village and it's really trying to snow.

The good news is that we've already had 32cm of snow in March, which matches the total snowfall for March, April & May 2008!

Mike Pow, am I right in thinking that it nukes snow Dec-Feb in Japan and cools off then? Somewhere I'd definitely like to be for a season, but my language skills are so bad I can't imagine being able to teach there... 3 months in the mountains and a couple more exploring the rest of Japan feels like something worth scraping some money together for Smile

Mike Pow, really nice powder conditions all this winter!! Are the conditions normally?? Or this winter is a really good winter in terms of snowfall?? Aprox 10meters from Nov to end of Feb is a nice mark!!!

Which is the best time of the winter to come there to have the chance of ski powder and if it's possible avoid peak times.... Really considering a trip there...

It has been a great winter but we've actually had less snow, more rain events at village level, and more wind events closing the upper lifts than normal.

So overall a less than average winter. Average is 14m at village level (based on records kept since 1953).

Can still make 14m if the rest of March and April brings snow. Typically very little snow in May.

January and February for greatest chance of skiing pow on a substantial base.

Best time would be first week in Feb, Aussie families have left.

Or last two weeks in Feb. Second week is Chinese New Year. Very busy.

But that's for the Niseko Resort Area. Plenty of other ski areas nearby that are pretty much quiet all the time.

Wouldn't come for less than 10 days to be honest.

Grey and windy until around 3pm. Then it started to snow lightly.

Then it started snowing and blowing in earnest.

By the time I called it a night at 3am there was 20cm on the ground at village level and the winds had died down.

Had to dig my way in.

Sunday 15 March 2009
Grand Hirafu, Niseko Resort Area

34cm in the past 24 hrs at MQ

Had to dig my way out. Top 25cm was light and dry, bottom 9cm was heavy.

Glen and I however made the cardinal mistake of leaving a 'sure thing' this morning.

Thinking that the top lifts would be on wind hold (a correct assumption) we decided to hit Rusutsu.

No wind, but also neglible new snow. Around 5cm.

So we drove back to Hanazono and got deepish turns and soft landings off the pillows in Strawberry and Blueberry Fields.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find cheaper than the Inghams package to the Niseko Resort Area and Rusutsu. Week in each.

January is the busiest time here - Australian and Hong Kong school holidays - but that's relative. 5-10 mins at most at the start of the day. After that nothing.

Started snowing yesterday afternoon and through the night.

Glen convinced me to venture up the hill and I'm so glad he did. And I listened.

Dust on crust the first couple of runs, then the snow started accumulating and the crust quickly became a memory.

The hill was deserted and it was fresh all morning.

Caught up with Beans (Ben) and when we called it a day it was knee deep and face shots. And dumping.

BIG WEDNESDAY

Woke to glorious sunshine and a blanket of fresh snow covering the spring melt, but before I'd finished breakfast the weather started rolling in from the ocean turning the sky gun metal.

But by the time Ian M, Jonathan Martin and I boarded our 8:30 chariot to the goods the bluebird had returned for arguably one of the best days of the season.
