Did anyone get to ski the back corries at Nevis or was it too dangerous? |
Avalanche risk was 3 on Sat but there were still a few going over.

Left Aviemore at 4pm and made it back to East London in one piece, having dropped ElizabethB in Sheffield, and got to bed by 2am - I'm knackered today. |
Good to hear you got back okay

Have to admit that I sloped off to the cafe on Sunday after just one run down the M1 piste from the top - we'd been told it was unpisted, unfortunately that wasn't quite the case as it had been driven over by a cat not dragging a groomer. Consequently the run was pretty dangerous in the conditions and we took it quite slowly. Conditions being; gusting winds up to 80mph which at that time were varily blowing downhill and across, the rain was tipping down and 5 mins out I was soaked through. The snow itself was wet, churned up by the cat and on the whole a sticky mess - forget sludge, this was fudge..... or is that Tab in Scotland? I didn't want to do anymore, the chance of an injury was too high and how would I drive? So, I made my excuses and left the other nutters in our party to crack on while I retired to a sofa by the fire. |
I thought you headed in there to recruit to Snowheads - you seemed to be making lots of friends in there and telling them about the site, lol!

My final thought is: I'm really glad I've done it and I can see the attraction ......if you live nearby. |
LOL, I'd do it again like a shot!

AlistairPink great to meet you and thanks again for your company on Saturday's last run |
Good meeting you too Alistair.

II thanks especialy for the ski-guiding on Saturday. Your local knowledge really did the trick |
Absolutely II, it was great meeting you and I don't think we'd have had as immensely enjoyable a day at Nevis without you so thanks and perhaps we'll do it again sometime

Roga you're a champion for Scottish skiing and I half get it. Keep it up. As soon as those hills grow another 1000m you'll be in business |
LOL, they were high enough for me over the weekend!

TopSmoke great to meet you after hearing so much about you from JohnnyBoy. You are indeed a TopBloke! |
Seconded!

and finally, ElizabethB thanks for your company this weekend, particularly in the car! I couldn't have made that journey without you . Thanks for the introduction to Tebay Services!!! Who knew? What a find . Thanks also for putting up with the jokes, the music and the dodgy passing manouveres - all without complaint. I still regret the bunny but rather that than one of the deer, hey?! |
Great meeting and skiing you too ElizabethB

geoffers, I saw that earlier on Winterhighland, glad he was okay but it's a reminder of how dangerous it can be in there. I was worried about what lay under the snow, I'd already gone flying on The Goose after one of my skis releasd after jamming against a boulder hidden behind a small mogul!
All the same it made me feel better about chickening out of heading in when Topsmoke was keen to go - sorry Topsmoke, maybe next time!

Tebay Services are the best in the country - a one-off run by locals with a great view. I've been there often.
I'm even more sorry, now, that I couldn't make it. The photos are great. Once a few Scots had tried out the avalanche risk in the back corries I think I'd have taken the risk and spent the rest of the day down the back. It really is a fun slope though I can't remember seeing it that rocky - can't have been the big drifts I thought were mentioned. And he seems to be starting from the low end which seems a pity - perhaps the cornices were too big at the top end? I take it none of the Snowheads lot tried it?

Well, a mile or two north of 38. Seemed to be quite a few people going there just to shop when I was last there in the summer.
I have yet to sample the delights of salmonella sandwitches at the truck stop

did anyone else see all those squished white rabbits all over the place? I've never seen so many road kills in one place. |
Missed the white bunnies but, sadly, felt a bump under the right front wheel after a regular one showed up too late in the headlights

So you should be! I was close to having a fit looking at that mess.
Great to hear everyone had a good time. The next trip will have to be planned around a period of high pressure in the west country... Which will thus enable me to get out of the hole called Plymouth.
Well, Plymouth's not that bad, but it seems it when you could be skiing...
