Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

La Plagne 2007/2008

Chris Brookes, Morning, from Montalbert, all roads are clear at the moment BUT snow is forecast for this afternoon and all night. Over the years we have had to put chains on several times and once from Aime, (1996 I think) Driving up last week there was evidence of snowploughed snow on the road edges as far back as Albertville snowHead
Having said all that the roads are cleared very quickly once the snow has stopped.

gwaelod, We have them but luckily have never had to try and put them on. I keep saying i will do a trial run but was unsure if the roads upto the resort ever get blocked.

rob@rar, you seem to have as much knowledge of Les Arcs as anyone.

Our Chalet hosts have advised that our La Plagne pass for this year now includes a day at Les Arcs free, as compensation for the Vanoise not running. Thinking about driving round and according to multimap it's only 22km. Any ideas where would be the best place to park in the Les Arcs ski area, we are coming from Les Coches.

Chris Brookes, i'll post my favorite runs later but I think if only there for 6 days and you ahve never skied La Plagne before it would be a waste of travelling time driving between the resorts. About an hour each way, 2 hours wasted when you could be skiing snowHead

Chris Brookes, we used to go regularly to La Plagne (Belle Plagne) every Easter. On 3 occasions we needed chains to get out .
In January you often need chains. Practice putting them on before you go.

The road up to La Plagne is probable the most difficult in snow of all the resorts in the Tarentaise. Its quite a bit steeper and has a load of tight hairpins. The road to Tignes or Val is for example much longer, but less steep.

Chris Brookes,

Favorite runs. The runs under L'arpette chairlift are good. Don't take St Jacques as unless you get some speed up there are some awful flat sections on it and don't get your speed right you end up poling it. Les Sources and Les Inversens of the top of Roche De Mio are particular favorites of ours. We did the glacier last year more for the experience of being on a glacier. Which as an experience was about being high up on a snowy thing (if I had paid more attention in geography I would have known that in advance Blush ). We haven't done Champagny but I hear great reviews of the runs, was on our list for this year but now we can’t as will be in Les Arcs. Runs to Montalbert are good to. The red Carina of the top of La Grand Rochette is another nice run.

Particularly nice run to La Roche but you will be greeted by a madman called BernardC shouting get the feck of his garden. Worth the pain of hearing him though. Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

Most of the blacks were on our to do list for this year. Done les Pelees near Montchavin, not that hard.

For any inexperienced in your group the blues are as they should be, a little challenging in parts but great fun. If you have a chalet host they will give you guidance as well but it’s a huge great place to ski. The only note of caution is that the runs to Les Coches and Montchavin if it is very cold and not sunny can get icy and fun to ski on. Skullie

Park in Bourg St Maurice at the funicular station and catch the train up the hill. Much better than driving up if you're a day visitor. After your day skiing treat yourself to a meal in the Chinese restaurant in BSM on the way home Smile

Chris Brookes, Was chatting to my mate this morning who goes to La Plagne with me, he agrees with my recommendations but added another to the be avoided run is 'Le Tunnel' of the top of Roche de Mio. Potential for a lot of poling if you get your speed wrong. Nice run for novices but even they have to get speed up to avoid poling which can be scary for them. Les Sources (our favorite in La Plagne) is a much better alternative. Les Sources was re modelled this summer as there was one very tough (oh the joy of watching novices on it who had taken the run without thinking Toofy Grin ) slope in the middle of it. It has seemingly been made slightly easier but you may want to do it yourself before taking a less expereinced person down it.

Just back from an amazing week... very impressed with first visit to La Plagne, will definately go again! All the runs are in fantastic condition and a real pleasure to ski.

Les Sources is fine, as you say gwaelod, a fairly steep section in the middle but it is wide and smooth and was no problem at all. Managed to do all the pistes you recommended - great choices, thank you!

Couldn't believe the lack of people everywhere, it was possible to do whole runs without passing a soul! Even managed the parapente down to Bourg, which definately gets the adrenaline running - thoroughly recommended! Very Happy

For those that know the area we did Hari Kiri today which was open for the first time whilst I have been here for the last 3 seasons, and it was in very good nick snowHead Also did Bosses which was not too moguled for a nice change snowHead
I didn't appreciate that the whole area at the top/before Sources starts had been opened up levelled a bit and widened. I guess it is now safer with more space for skiers travelling from each direction and entering the fray from the restaurant, which has also had a conservatory style structure built over part of the terrace Very Happy

boredsurfin, gwaelod, is there something funny (as in odd) going on in La Plagne?
1. There is no announcement of the Vanois clusure on the website
2. The piste map seems to suggest all the lifts are closed
3. The on-line lift pass purchase/update facility is still not available
What's going on? (or not going on?) Puzzled

Jonpim, Wouldn't pay to much heed to the website. Between them and Les Arcs its hard to believe they even know it is winter.

On the Les Arcs site they have stopped the sale of the all areas pass

Jonpim, All of La Plagne is open apart from Hara Kiri which although open and in good nick yesterday was closed today Confused Most lifts are open except for one over near Montchavin called Vanoise Express which according to the info boards at all lifts ticket tourist offices etc is closed! wink

Gwaelod I dont think a bus to replace the VE is a reality as a good look at the map suggests a complicated journey of several miles and I guess quite a long time. Sad

Interesting all this sudden fuss to get to Les Arcs. We never worried about this before the Vanois Express. I don't think the journey is worth it, even with a car. There is easily enough to keep you occupied in either resort.

And I reckon the Great Waffle Challenge will demostrate that if you really want to get to another resort from La Plagne, then Courchevel is the right way to go. snowHead
