Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

sheepmadang, yep, I think the snow will hold out fine. Looks more likely it will get topped up further Very Happy

Currently the weather looks like it might be cracking on Saturday, snowy on Sunday (but not too windy on the current runs) and then possibly clearing again on Monday.

I'd say an excellent weekend to be heading for the hills. I have my younger son's birthday party on Saturday but I'm thinking of trying to get up on Sunday or maybe a cheeky wee midweek day next week.

Precise details of the weather are bound to change around a bit as we're in a spell of fast moving systems but overall the jetstream looks like staying on a southerly track for at least another week, so snowcover should continue to build snowHead snowHead snowHead

Anybody seen/heard anything from the Nevis back corries, they must be filling up a treat on these winds ?

II, Very Happy

I see from the trips thread you're going on Thursday. Would be grateful for a further report, particularly interested in if you can ski the whole way back round and if there's any chance (not much I would think) that they could run the braveheart ?

Skied in Cairn Gorm yesterday. Poor visibility at start of day but by 11am clear blue sky. White Lady unpisted and limited cover, M1, Gunbarrel, Ptarmigan Bowl all fine. Left hand side of CisteFairway only due to low snow depth on rest of piste. Mid station only although saw a few trying to ski to base station. Very quiet so a good day out had by all but more snow needed.

They had 1,200 on Sat and 2,000 on Sun - car park was full on Sun.

I think the all time record was about 10,000 people one Sunday the early 1980s but 4,000-5,000 was probably more typical at weekends in the 80s.

Queues on Sunday not bad at all - some lifts had no queues.

According to figures in the local press Glenshee had 1,200 up on Saturday and 2,000 on Sunday, I presume these figures are based on ticket sales.

Yeah, they did say 30cm...

Serious winds as well though. Could drift the snow to over a metre in places and could also blast it away to almost nothing in places as well!

Only time will tell.

Apparently they're now confirming that something like 30cm fell and there's more on the way! Gale force winds at the moment though so goodness knows what the hills will look like by the time it clears - a lot of drifting I suspect but with all the snow fences and gullies collecting drifted snow it'll hopefully fill things up nicely. It's a very different pattern to what you get in the Alps!

"Conditions at the Snowpit site today at 670 metres.

Strong winds (135mph on Cairngorm Summit) today with heavy snow and drifting. Poor visibility. Trail breaking in deep snow from 400m alt. Bodes well for the future snowcover"

There was new snow down to 200m in the Pentlands south of Edinburgh this morning. Ski areas currently digging themselves out following todays snow and wind. Heaps of new snow showing on the web cams which aren't covered by snow.

Forecast is for light winds and sunshine on Fri/Sat followed by lots more snow, with freezing level well below the ski areas.

Here's the latest from Nevis:
Quote:
Large quantities of snow have fallen in the last 36 hours and all runs are complete with quite a lot of snow lying below the top gondola station. There are ample areas for beginners and sledging. However it will take some time to get the snow under control and storm damage will have to be assessed at daylight. Piste machines are working tonight. Most runs will be skiable from the lifts which are operating on Thursday we expect to run nearly all the lifts on Friday and at the weekend.

They also add:
Quote:
Great skiing conditions expected for Friday and Saturday.

Well fancy that! Laughing

There's usually snow well into April sometimes longer, the season before last Cairngorm closed in the second week IIRC of May.

In fact usually the best months are March/April so you should be safe unless there's a serious thaw between now and then.

roga, this is Scotland, there's bound to be a serious thaw between now and then. Laughing

... but hopefully lots more snow too. Mid-March is about as snow sure as it gets here and the centres have shut in late April/May due to lack of demand rather than lack of snow on more than one occasion.

Are the chair runs complete ? Any word from round the back ?

brian, Chair runs are definatly complete there is full snow cover for at least 100m vertical below the bottom of the chair.
It was Summit gully Shocked that was being skiied on Monday. There is loads of snow over the back and as the snow level is 400-500m skiing back round shouldn't be a problem Avi risk is the only thing to consider.

II, me and my car sharer have settled on Glenshee since we don't think we'll get away too early (both of us have morning child duties).

Doesn't look like they'll get Glas Maol open but can't wait to get in some Tiger action, haven't been on it for a few years Very Happy

Went to Aviemore again yesterday when all the upper runs open with great snow and could easily ski to Base station which was good because both the Poma and T Bar next to M1 were both out of action. This meant only way up the mountain was using the train from base or mid stations. Hope they get these working for the weekend. East and West Walls, Ryvoan, Bynack all closed.

Started snowing again by mid afternon and when we left it looked like today and the weekend will be fantastic.
