Carled; It's true; I was wrong. The GFS models were giving snowfall for today (10-20cm) all week, but they have failed.
I am sad for it.
My forecast isn't desperate. It's what the models were saying, even this morning they were giving it.

This meteogram shows the temperatures that should be for now.
According to 6am GFS launch there is a little posibility of precipitation in the weekend

The only certainty is that I'll bet the GFS changes by this time tomorrow...
Check out the control line for the 15th Dec if you really want to get depressed (or ignore it as it's too far out to be meaningful )

Metalhead... the GFS models are notoriously bad at forecasts. By its very name it's intended to be a "Global" system and hence its unsuitability to a highly specialised area such as the alpine region. It's free, which is why snowforecast use it and charge for their forecasts derived from GFS data. Good trick, huh? As I have been saying for ages... just because GFS predicts a certain something does not mean it'll happen, I'm afraid. It does, however, give a good general overview, but it is only an overview and cannot be relied upon, there are many, many other factors affecting things.
The further away the prediction, the more useless it becomes. kitenski, I noticed the control run surge on the 15th too and I'm just now convinced that of all the wild innacurate things that are being predicted... this one will probably be true to confound us all.
By the way, the 06z version of the GFS readouts is the one that virtually everyone ignores as being the wildest piece of fiction around. The 00z and 12z are normally far more reliable indicators.
metalhead132, it's useful that you've posted a screen cap of the gfs chart. Just compare it tomorrow with the one that's out then!

easiski, mine are crossed tightly for you too. I think a certain person may be getting some new skis from Santa, and if Serre Che isn't snowy enough, we may have to come over to try them out .

Where do you think it snowed to? Looking from my window it is a bit hard to tell but I don't see any fresh snow below around 2300m, but we have the Grandes Rousses between us which can make quite a difference.

davidof, Well the hump on the Diable is around 2,200m I think. It does look as though it's snowed above there. Top of the Tete Moute deffo looks whiter.

kitenski, No. I think the ground is too warm, and with water supply issues here they won't want to waste it. It was cold last night (frost on ground this morning), so they may have run a bit in the middle of the night, but I suspect not. I won't be able to go up straight away on Sat as I have a meeting in the morning, but will head up the mountain asap afterwards to let you all know what's what up there. If it's all open above 2,600m then that's not too bad at all.

I couldn't go up this morning, but went up early afternoon - just for you guys, to see how it was and what was open. I have to say that after a 3 hour meeting for the building I didn't feel remotely like it! Anyway I'll put up the thumbnails and you and see how it was: Click on any one to see a bigger image.
Firstly, looking out of the Jandri Experess I could see that the Cretes is almost skiable after that I spotted the Lac Du Plan was frozen, which is a very good sign and the feeder lake appeared to have crop circles on it .
At 2,600 I saw that the Toura still needs some more snow before it can run , but that the Jandri was pisted and being skied down to the 2,600m level .
Looking up the glacier, you can see that the wind has been blowing pretty hard however lower down on the Signal it was relatively shletered . The Echines des chevres needs a fair bit more
there are several options for skiing down I took the Serre palas which gives access to the 8-man chair which is running from 2,900 - 3,200m and thence to the Jandri. This bit was well dodgy as far as stones are concerned and is closed. The Breche is not currently skiable.
So I skied the whole way down to the Cretes, but the Grand Nord is definitely not advisable under instructor level skiing - very nasty crust indeed . finally, I arrived at Les Cretes at 2,100m
the snow is much more packed than last year, and although there is less of it visually, I thought the skiing was actually better. I didn't do much damage to my skis for instance, whereas last year I wrecked them!
My friend the "M.Meteo" the pisteur says it will snow a little tonight, more tomorrow night and then lots next week. Keeping all fingers crossed
