The third of March has come and gone. It’s not looking too hopeful. By the middle of March the Dolomites are starting to get rather warm and the season tends to end fairly early in April.
The super Dolomiti has thrown the towel in. It’s the season that never was. What a shame, particularly because the snow and the weather have been superb this year. Sod’s law will probably ensure poor natural snow cover and high temperatures next year.
At least they should have a decent summer and autumn.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Please tell Jet2 if you'd like them to run their Manchester to Venice flights from December to mid Feb, like they do the rest of the year. More info from link...

Just received this email for Dolomotisuperski :: Must keep an eye out for the Gnomes next year.....
Dear skiers,
Once upon a time there was a gnome who lived in the kingdom of the Dolomites. During the winter season, every day in the morning the gnome - whose name was Flor - would come out of his shelter in the middle of the rocks and with the aid of two wooden planks tied to his feet, he would slide down to the valley to visit Princess Matilda. He was madly in love with her, she lived in a small house at the edge of the woods.
He loved to be touched by the crisp morning air along the snowy slopes of the Dolomites and enjoy the rising sun. In the evening, after spending the day admiring the princess, he would load the two wooden planks onto his shoulders and return to his humble abode among the spires, retracing his uphill path. Every day, every winter, for many, many years... until one day Flor noticed that men had built a carousel, which brought him back home without effort. And this carousel became every year more comfortable, cosy and fast. Even on the descent, the gnome noticed that he was no longer alone. The descent took place along slopes which were more and more smooth, together with many coloured men, who enjoyed as well the sliding on the snow with planks.
Then the winter of 2020-21 came. After the first snowfall, like every year, Flor went down to the valley with his boards. At the end of the day, when it was time to go home, he noticed that the carousel wasn’t working and so was the next day and the day after that. To his extreme disappointment he also noticed that during the descents he could no longer compete with the coloured children to see who could make the highest jump or the most beautiful curve, because he was alone. The gnome could not understand this fact, especially since the winter of 2020-21 was wonderful: it had been years since he had seen so much snow, a white blanket beyond imagination that made the landscape even more enchanting.
The Dolomites appeared like precious stones set in a natural pattern between the sky, the snow, the sun and the stars. On one of the days when the spring sun was taking over the harsh winter, he heard Princess Matilda telling a neighbour about the "corona" pandemic and that that winter the men had to stay in their homes because a bad disease had frightened them. Flor, saddened, walked with bowed head and for the last time that year up the mountain to return home. But in his heart, he was sure: next year the carousel would be running again, the children would be playing and enjoying themselves and he would no longer be alone.

Perfect sunny conditions and great snow for mid March right down to the valley floor.
Currently minus 11c at 2,500m and it looks to stay cold all week.

This is a form of torture
Serious question, how would one sum up the Dolomiti snow season, this year, Good bad or Average
If memory serves me, huge snowfall in Jan and some more in Feb, has been dry and warmish in March , I think
Im guessing as we approach Mid March, conditions are as one would expect

I’d say very good indeed. Best season since about 2015 ? Not only have they had plenty of snow but it’s been a lot cooler than normal and they have lost very little snow. The weather has also been typically Dolomite with sunny clear weather just like today. They would have lost very few days to high winds, avalanche risk or poor visibility.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

As a brilliant poet once said...I should be glad to be so inclined, what a waste, what a waste, but I don't mind.
S'pose it'll still be there next season
You know it makes sense.

The main snow this season fell in early December and between Xmas and New year. February and March so far have been mostly dry. Only a year to wait (hopefully!!) till I go back

@Holly101, Keep a lookout for the Birthday Bashers. They will be wearing bright orange snoods. You could bump into them anywhere.

Webcams showing a Temperature of -9 today at Piz Sella! : Also, some racing (or training) going on at Kronplatz....
It’s the last week of the season that never was and conditions are still brilliant. The forecast is for a drop in temperature though not quite as radical as here in the UK.
The Dolomitians must be pretty fed up having lost such a great season. They will have the summer to look forward to but what chance that next year will be anywhere near as good as this one would have been
Still cold, still full cover on runs down as low as 935m at Kronplatz. Temperatures will eventually start to creep up.
What an extraordinarily long snow season by modern standards.

@albob, yep, the 3D map is no longer supported. Mine stopped working on my PC and my android phone.
The new web based version is here. But is not tailored with detailed info.

Here is the Dolomiti Superski map. Not as good as the old one, in that you can't go full screen.
@Awdbugga, Thanks for the reply -- but, the online version is not working for me either (microsoft edge as a browser) : shall try Chrome and check

Hmm - If I go to your second link and select Arabba, no lifts or pistes show, if I search for e.g. Burz, the lifts and pistes show up ..
Maybe it is just me.....?
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@albob, nah it's not just you. It is clunky. Using the second link, I select the ski area, say Arabba, then as you say nothing is shown; then I search for Arabba and bingo, all lifts and pistes etc are shown. Quite a few of the rifugios are missing off the new map as well. I suspect the cost to be included was getting prohibitive.
Conditions looked amazing must have got decent snow recently
Realised the piste he finishes on was one I repeated with my 3 year old on his first trip a few years back. Happy sad thinking of the lonely piste (and me not on it!)
@8611, thanks for the link ; shall enjoy that tomorrow

Just superb
Demonstrates what a superb season they have had snow and weather wise and sadly how much most have missed out
Still some good short ski tours to be done for the next couple of weeks here in the uk though
For fans of the Dolomites, the Giro D'Italia will visit the area on the 24th of May ; passing through Snowheads favourites Alleghe, Canazei and Arabba before finishing in Cortina
Many years ago I saw a feature on NewsNight about to Southern Tyrol. The presenter started the piece with "Apartheid is alive and well in the Southern Tyrol"...
Can't remember the town he visited, but it was a bit like Northern Ireland with separate schools for the different languages and people living in 'enclaves'.
It was quite 'harmonious' though.

Snow looking pretty good in yesterday’s Giro d’Italia as Bernal headed over the mountain into Cortina.

It may be now but it wasn't in the 1920s. I have noticed an increase in Italianisation in the Dolomites with many of the tradditional names now being replaced with Italian ones on road signs etc.
