@Dave of the Marmottes nobody should really recommend TW Soul7s... I firmly believe he will break them. As you allude to, most Rossi skis are far too soft for charging hard on hence why I think he should try some ballsy skis before buying... ie Preacher/Ragnarok/Cochise or something of that ilk

That's how I like my ride  My motorbike, Triumph street triple R, is not the most stable of things at high speed in a straight line but when it's being thrown from side to side through the hairpins, it will leave faster bikes behind, I like my skis the same way.
New White Dots are out of the budget, though I don't know what the budget is, if there is one (joys of self employment) the difference between the heads or wd could be the difference between doing the eosb or not.
One concern is how uncomfortable a wide ski will be when being carved hard on piste which is something that I could find out at the oktober test.
I'm getting ski lust, sod the new skis, how much is a ticket to New Zealand?

You're having a laff if you think you can get some hard carving in in a dome. Maybe one turn if the slope is empty. Big skis rail just fine on piste ( though it is highly desirable that the snow is soft enough to get an edge into) - real question is how much and how fast you can tip em.

What's it like off road? Only then would you be making a fair comparison. All Mountain skis are by definition a bit of a compromise. You will not be able to ski a slalom course like Alberta Tomba on them.

As you are buying a wide ski but not a full on powder ski you will be fine with the caveat see above. It is surprising to us old 'uns what they are capable of.

@tangowaggon, dunno what you were quoted for new WD's but you should ask Jon before assuming anything on price! He not only offers the best price but he also has all the ex-demo / cosmetic blemish / previous season etc stocks too. With the large number of Whitedot owners on sH, they also not infrequently do come up second hand on the forum, so keep an eye on the classifieds bit.
I say Preacher because it is just a bit ridiculous how good it is at both on- and off-piste. Being 112 underfoot it really does sound like a canoe but I promise it does not perform that way... Whitedot really did create a monster with that one. Get a bit of confidence (which takes me 1-2 days, I suspect it takes you about the time it takes to put your boots on) you can throw them around very aggressively and feel totally secure. I'm not a salesman for WD I promise... they're just ridiculous skis, providing you have the weight and/or technique to throw them around hard.
Either way, being that it's September on Friday, Oktobertest isn't far off, and skiing doesn't begin for a few months after. So I think one way or another if you bought anything before the ski test you'd be doing yourself a disservice.

Having skied with TW and as I own a pair of Soul 7s I'd say no way.
Garry definitely needs to get stiffer.

Isn't that the point? He doesn't want a race ski if he wants an off piste/ true all mountain ski but might want something which gives up as little as possible in the secondary areas he cares about while satisfying primary criteria.

This is what I skied offpiste and deep powder till last year with 20 yr old boots and shot bindings (the bindings are actually tight with new boots so I might bring them to the gnarlibug)

So can you tell me of a stiff, wide, float-in-powder, good off-piste ski which 'matches up to race skis'?
Did you read the thread title at all? I don't think he's looking for race skis.
@Dave of the Marmottes that's what I assumed too... maybe I'm missing something and the fat ski I wanted all along was only 67mm underfoot

If he is happy to take two pairs of skis on a trip then it wouldn't matter as much.

Sorry I didn't realise he was against taking 2 sets
Whilst he's asking about piste performance, I think the point was that he wants a wide, off-piste orientated ski than can still carve a good line when require. Which IMO, for big/aggressive people, is the Preacher.
Not, a piste ski which can be skied off piste with great amounts of effort. Because that's what he currently does.

Great first time off piste/all mountain ski with great carving ability. Very light and playful for their size (186cm). I'm 5ft 11 and 86kg and they are really manageable in steeps, trees and knee deep pow.
I was about to put them up on Ebay if u are interested. Have used them in Whistler, Kicking Horse, Sunshine, Grimentz and Lake Louise so have had a great variety of terrain and snow conditions. They have Atomic FFG 12 bindings fitted.

For the avoidance of doubt, I AM looking for new skis, but there has been some good banter to while away the long hours of daylight. I'm now paying the price for being too tight to try out different skis when I have had the chance, but getting a second pair of skis as well as a ski trip past my (now ex) wife was a futile excercise, that is obviously no longer a psychological problem but the maintenance payments leave it a practical one  but as I am now reaping the benefits of Paul bullying me into buying new kit the last two seasons, the beast of retail therapy has been let loose
Having absorbed everyone's comments, buying a ski blind, without trying it, is far from ideal unless it is very cheap, good deal, or second hand such that it can be sold on without too much loss. The oktobertest might be good to allay my thoughts on ski width or rule some skis out, either way, it will be good to meet up
Who I ski with means more to me than where I ski, so, with the exception of the sopib I probably won't be spending that much time offpiste so I'm happy to sacrifice a bit of offpiste performance for the sake of it remaining a good piste ski.
flyst@r, I might be interested in your Atomics, probably not one that I would have shortlisted but 2nd hand means that I could sell on without much loss if I don't get on with them.
Unless some serious bargains turn up online, I need to spend some time on the St Anton trip to rag a few demo skis about.

Tested some Rossi Sky7 hd's today, in the heavy & very tracked out offpiste i could just feel them starting to perform and the rocker doing its job but on piste they were awful, the 18m turn radius meant that they wouldnt carve on anything steeper than a blue and they just seemed very unstable. I swapped tbem for a pair of Rossi short turms at 12m radius and just 163 as the shop didn't have anything else offpiste worth trying. Even in flat light the little Rossis were so much more fun and incredibly easy to ski.
For me, I think "offpiste" skis will be horrible things on piste so I'll keep my iRallys as a one ski does all option.
