Back to Schladders on Saturday for a week. Looks a bit on the chilly side but plenty of snow due between now and Monday. The forecast is showing minus 17c as the maximum at the top on Monday. Frau Hefski is coming along this time and she is non to happy once it goes below minus 10c. Full report to follow.

Arrived into Maria Alm last night and woke up this morning to light snow which turned fairly heavy by late morning and it hasn't let up yet. Cleared about 20-25cm off my car today and that was last at 2:30pm and it is now 5pm. Slightly lighter snowfall now than earlier.
Not that great for race training though!

@Touchguru, Please keep me in touch with conditions if you have the time and inclination. I'm back in Maria Alm over half term next month
The run down the back of Natrun to Aberg is always a good sign as to how much snow there is.If that's open, there's loads! But,I've been looking at the panorama piste map on the ski amade website and that run isn't even shown anymore, let alone shown as closed, so I was wondering if it had been closed for good
I see a few more runs were opened yesterday and the long T-bar on Aberg. Hopefully all this new snow will open up a few more for you
Can't wait for my steak on hot stone at Thalerhof/Dengl.....salivating already at the thought
Have fun

I was speaking to some locals in hotel Ader during new year week and apparently the gondola/ chair to Natrun is being extended over the mountain to the base of Aberg for next year.

Wow, that would be great......so presumably the run is closed due to building work then?
The only problem with this is the fact they are doing it means that they are getting a far greater number of visitors than in the past to justify and pay for it. The great Austrian secret is now out ! Happy fro teh locals but....

Only out here until tomorrow unfortunately and then back on 21st until 26th so will let you know how things look then. My skiing will also be fairly limited to Hinterreit piste area but I will see what I can find out for you about the other runs.

I'm back out 23rd to 30th Jan so will update here.
Had a walk over Natrun over Christmas and they have been clearing trees. You get a good view if you look back from the Sinalcobahn.
For live video of Natrun check out my webcam linked below.

Hi all. We've been looking at maria alm for this year's hol. We wanted to go a couple of years ago but wasn't available as a package. It's now on Crystal website. Thinking of coming out 30th Jan for a week. What's the snow like there. Will it be good skiing as things stand. Hopefully more will fall over next 2 weeks. Couple of questions....what's the village like? I've heard its v pretty. Are there things to do at night? How easy is it to get the rest of the hochkonig ski area. Thanks for any advice. (it's between here and avoriaz)

@Jon Ford, I may be shot for this Jon, Maria Alm is supposed to be the best kept secret in Austria!
No idea what the snow will be like as we don't get there till Feb 13th but I'm sure it will be fine. The rest of the area is easily accessible . There's a route called the King's Route which goes all the way to Muhlbach and back. Nightlife is pretty much limited to The Dengl and Chilli's but we love the place and the food is fab. Steak on hot stone at The Dengl is a must.
All the piste restaurants are also very good and very good value

Ski with me and Queenie at Zauchensee, finish early then drive over to Schladders for the night of madnes?
@Kooky, I'm here for the GS tomorrow, I'm intending to ski over from the Red 8 (fewer crowds hopefully) and watch from somewhere near the start. Do you know exactly where the Start hut will be?

@queen bodecia, no we watch on the big screens in the market place the tickets were gone months ago! The atmosphere is totally mind blowing, even there and you can see the slope as well from some angles! The crush in the stadium is way too much for me to be honest!

There are still plenty of red standing tickets left, both east and west.
If i go I'm probably going to get a ticket this time... yellow's and stadium have sold out. The €525 specials are still available though!!

Jon Ford, why go with Crystal when you can book with Kate & Thom at http://www.skifix.co.uk
They do packages and live in the village, it'll be the best ski holiday you'll ever have!

Still snowing steadily for the third day, non-stop here in Altenmarkt since Friday. They are using snow blowers on the race course for the ladies GS race today. Anyone who knows the Kogelalm in Wagrain and has a Facebook account should take a peek at the photos there. They are digging themselves out. The wind is blowing the snow into some serious drifts on the tops.

@queen bodecia, if you're going to watch the Night Slalom from the side of the piste (red tickets?) take something to stand on. Sponge rubber mat or such like. You'll get very cold feet otherwise. There was a bar amongst the terraces they'd cut into the snow when we went despite what the tickets said.

@Kooky, grrrr. Sounds fab, make the most of it, I'm sure you don't need telling that. I very nearly booked flights to come out yesterday and return today as I saw the forecast looked bang on. Instead I've been making adjustment to van to accommodate more skis, those darn kids. Out next weekend kid free.more schnee forecast for next weekend though temps creep back up. Keep enjoying. Be safe.

@HutToHut, thanks for that tip - I picked up some of the closed-cell foam mats they handed out to the VIPs at Sölden and stuffed them into my backpack so they will get some air then next week. We are definitely going for the red tickets and will decide which side on the day.

Superb skiing today. Great powder first thing but very cold minus 15 at 1700 m at 10.30 on the Planai. Pistes now bashed rock hard after piles of new snow on Haus yesterday. Report from Reiteralm tomorrow. The Planai today near the 8 man fairy tale meadow lift:

Arriving on the 23rd for our first trip to Schladming. re the night race, do regulars recommend skiing elsewhere in ski amade on
race day or will Schladming be ok apart from the Planai piste used for the race ?

@BJP, it's normally pretty quiet in skiing terms.most race fans are there to drink. The local roads can get busy from mid afternoon. Enjoy the night race,it's a real special atmosphere and it always snows on race day.

@Herr Hefski, I was there today it was probably the best day I have had since last years powderfest with @waynos.
I did the powder bowl beside the paradise lift 6 times and didn't see a single soul It was damn cold but I have taken to wearing mittens( makes loading the fat skis in that tiny slot on the Planaibahn interesting) but at least my hands were toastywarm.

@BJP, what @waynos, said. I actually find it quieter as I think a lot of people are put off by the thought that the place will be rammed.

@BJP, as above apart from the race course the skiing was no different from usual. Possibly a little quieter even. When we went you could still get to the bottom of the Planai via red piste 2. Can't remember which day it was, but at one point they'd set up a small slalom course for the tourists to have a go on. PA commentator and names up on the jumbotron TV thingy! The town is rammed with people early evening onwards.
