Awesome! Heading out on the 10th.....been to schladming many times but have not been able to ski since march 2013 when I broke my tib/fib. Curtailed my plans to do the season last year!

Hardly snowed at all in Bad Gastein (0.2mm precipitation in last 12hrs as opposed to 3.5mm in St Johann).
This seems often the case and am often surprised at leaving the valley and seeing much greater depths in St Johann.
I wonder why.

@snowheads68, for the first time in I don't know how many years I saw an apology from the Gasteinertal Bergbahn on the Panorama screens this morning. It explained that because of the excessive amounts of snow, the Avalanche Control Commission could not be sure about opening the Sport Gastein lifts today! So either you are in the wrong valley or you are being deliberately negative.
The links between Dorfgastein and Grossarl are open, the Grukogel area will open as soon as it is secured, the Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnertal area is fully open. The only ares closed at the moment are those that are avalanche prone! Over 40cms of snow fell yesterday in just about all the Pongau area of Salzburgerland.

You're talking rubbish. Sportgastein is often closed because of avalanche danger. Sometimes several days in succession.
You're also lying about Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnertal. Far from fully open. Even the official site says 47% piste open. And they tend to exaggerate. Ignore variations of pistes that are not open while the main variation is.
We've had a fair bit overnight (10cms around town) and things are thankfully much improved but what I stated was true at the time. Check the weather station stats.

Yes I sympathise - I get fed up 'with' people on this forum who don't read a prior post properly, are rude and accuse others of lying (your word). It's not necessary. Good day to you.

@snowheads68, Thanks for your information it is more valuable that those who post incorrect or inaccurate information on this forum. Some people think that if they post regularly and/or have done for some time this adds more value to what they say but this is not the case. I could well do without a lot of the posted information where it involves personal opinion and self-interest. Fortunately you can look up information about open lifts, snow depths, etc. and view webcams so anyone can and should check conditions themselves. I think Bad Dorfgastein was thought up in someones imagination. I've bought a house in Carinthia and would happily spend the time giving out information during future trips except for certain annoying people on the threads who would make me think why bother. Some of the best posts on here are from people on weekly holidays giving their opinions of conditions from their resort whether good or bad like yourself.

@snowheads68 - I'll back you up here based on my prior years experience. Even the local agent when he sold me my apartment in Bad Gastein told me that it gets the worst snow out of the Ski Amade area (or at least compared to St Johann where he lived). This excludes Sport Gastein of course. The obvious contrast for me has always been with the valley around Wagrain... there always seems to be alot more snow depth there and from what I've heard it has something to do with the S-N orientation of the Gastein valley compared to Wagrain which would be E-W. Apparently Gastein gets hammered by the Fohn because of this. I'm amazed though that not more is open given the snow that seems to have come through, I've always felt that Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein are short of pisting equipment and personnel. Contrast to Dorfgastein where pretty much everything is open.

Ended up with the day off today unexpectedly so hopped on the bus to have a wander round Radstadt and sort a couple of things. Plenty of snow falling as I got to Obertauern (I'm east of Obertauern, heading towards Mautendorf) and beyond down to Radstadt, definately the snowier side compared to where I am.

I think you're right about the orientation. It's also right up against the continental divide which makes it worse for Föhn I imagine.
Storms from the North often seem to peter out as well before they reach here.
The piste company don't always seem to make a great effort to open things up. I heard they had to be bullied into providing snow-making for the Bad Gastein home piste by the Swedish companies who threatened to leave. Some seasons the home run was never open for a single day.
Dorfgastein seems to make a greater effort. Skied there last April 26 and they still managed to have about 20 runs open. Always open daily from as early as possible as well.
Still a great area though. Nowhere better than Sportgastein on a sunny day or Graukogel on a Snowy one.

I skied Schladming this morning and altenmarkt, just to the west, this afternoon for a late mini ski tour. Def more fresh at altenmarkt, a good 40 to 50cms at even 1000m. We skied down in fading light in untracked meadows just away from the piste. Awesome way to end the year and it's still snowing steadily.

Hirschkogel first thing today was some of the best snow I've ever skied on. Ankle deep powder on piste and knee deep on the edges.

Hirschkogel is spectacular this morning. The rest of my group have gone in search of new pistes but I wanted to actually see what I've been seeing for the last few days. I'll probably do less skiing today due to all the stopping to take photos

@ukredsox, I skied until about 13.00 then buggered off to take photos of Hohenwerfen for some "Where Eagles Dare" fans. In doing so I discovered the "hidden valley" of Werfenweng, a delightful surprise with a fair few lifts. Just have to find out if it is a part of the Sportwelt Amadé, I suspect not, so this year I'll pass. But next season when I buy my Super Salzburg Ski Pass, I'll give it a few trials to get to know it.
I gave up after being stuck on a couple of lifts with people who were clearly still carrying a lot of alcohol in their systems (that horrible metallic smell they exude). With the crowds increasing and more and more idiotic behaviour I beat a tactical retreat. I'm still nursing a poorly shoulder after a collision this time last season resulted in surgery last summer.

@Samerberg Sue, a friend of mine is from Werfenweng, and claims that it picks up a lot more snow than the surrounding areas and has some of the best tree skiing in Austria.

I just wish that they'd make a token effort at pisteing the top of the drop from Gernkogel down to the three lifts at Strassalm. It was mogols first thing and only got worse as the late starters appeared. The blue/red combo off the top of Hirschkogel had been pisted and held up much better throughout the day.
the lack of base depth in high traffic areas is still showing. The drop from the Gernkogel pylon/viewing platform down to the restaurant was through to icy grass in places.

@clarky999, definitely worth exploring from what I could see! I know it by reputation for paragliding, but have never skied there as all my local mates said it was "old-fashioned" which I interpreted to mean slow old-fashioned lifts. The ones I saw most definitely were not old!
@ukredsox, they used to piste during the day, but all it does is encourage the "boy racer-types" to scream down the slope with no regard for others whatsoever. At least this way they have to slow down to manage the bumps. None of them are too bad to be honest and if you keep to the extreme left-hand side it is often much flatter for some unknown reason as well as not quite so steep. The black from the Gernkogl down to the Blue is rarely open in high season for similar reasons, plus it does not hold a base too well. Last week I saw people picnicking on that slope in the sun!

06 run has give a nice upgrade on the snow for this weekend.
xcweather has 40cms predicted for Bad Gastein.
Badly needs it. Graukogel open but shouldn't be (strewn with stones and grass even at the top).
2 of the reds from Stubnerkogel have been temporarily marked as blacks and have an "Experts Only" sign at the entrance. Not sure why as they didn't seem too bad although I did do them very early. The other 2 reds are not open yet.

@Samerberg Sue, haha - that horrible metallic smell isn't entirely from alcohol. I drink quite a bit of beer and hang out with quite heavy drinkers occasionally. We've made studies and this is what we found. That metallic smell only comes from the alkies who had a lot of garlic in their dinner. Seems the garlic opens the pores and let's itself and the alcohol out together in an obnoxious fuming stench !

Things warmed up in the valley here from yesterday afternoon onwards.
This made a bit of drizzle in the morning along with so much black ice it was dangerous getting out my door!
Things seem to have cooled down now and the new snow has hit!
Snow is falling in slightly 'chunky' wet lumps but it is laying again and dosing the ground a plenty.
unless things cool down drastically overnight I don't think we will have any champagne powder but will certainly have some decent quantity to get bashed in overnight!
