Anyone in Chamonix know if the snow got further up the valley to Le Tour / GM?

Still (just) snowing. About 10-15cms in town, apparently 40cms + higher up which will be most welcome. Les houches fully open, higher runs a little restricted due avalanche control.
More forecast for the weekend.

Scot_Ski, yeah, it was all a little scratchy until today. I suspect today was rather fine but we were a little sluggish...

Skied the Grand Envers ( a variant of the Vallee Blanche) today.
Had to retreat form the Moyen Envers (to the Grand Envers) variant as the avie and crevasse situation was a bit much.

Idris is how is the exit? I've seen photo's from around the Salle Manager that look passable but not so well filled in. Is this the same for some of the Envers Variants?
Will this weekends snowfall (and wind) help much?
Skied over at Flegere yesterday. Pistes heading over that way were quite good, but busy. Managed to get a couple of knee deep powder laps before the Swedes arrived. It was getting very hot by then and the snow was definitely getting warm too! The general coverage isn't great though so you have to pick your way carefully. The line I took traversed across and down from by the bottom of the Floria drag.
There was a skin track heading lac Blanc way, but nothing on the Traditional Berard Valley traverse direction. Getting there could be sketchy, but the main gentle open face could be very good down to the beginning of the valley/refuge. Having toured Alphonse Favre a good few weeks ago I'd imagine the exit is still tricky.

What a difference a day makes. Had a semi powder day in Courmayeur yesterday, early start this morning to get parked at LH was less fun! The cover is thin, the back chair wasn't running and the parking was all full when we retreated at 10.30. So second breakfast, and a walk around the market, plus fingers crossed for this afternoons snow fall.

jbob, we had a disappointing morning at LHs yesterday mostly because there was a >1hr queue for lift passes and although we arrived before 10h00 - and got straight into a parking space at the "complet" Prarion car park (which must refer to omelettes as there were quite a few spaces at that instant) - we had to be back in Cham for 12h30 so up Prarion and only a couple of runs before hometime.
Big mistake was thinking it a good idea to recharge a badge on the phone while queuing, which then didn't work, although we had by then paid for it and they refused to refund when we eventually reached the desk at 11h15 (n.b. The group/online ticket collection queue was practically immobile). So a short ski. N.B., the online recharge system allegedly takes 10-15 minutes to process the recharge. Which is clearly crap tech, frankly.
Pistes firm, scratchy, quite a few stones around. They'll be fine for most folks his week although I would hate to be repairing hire skis... Bro in law whose flights we had to get him too would have been quite happy having a long day.

Grand Envers exit to VB has some mandatory steep skiing/sidestepping
Salle Manger - Fine
Exit to Montonvers either rock skis ( that will probably get you killed/very scared higher up) or take em off and CRAMPON down
Exit to Mottets a long walk on crampons

under a new name, arrived in Les Houches at last , pouring rain since east of Paris , and snowing all the way up from Sallanches , A40 from there was covered as you climbed , but the snow was wet so not any real issues driving.......just poked my head out on the balcony and it is still snowing and lying at 1000m...time for a couple of glasses of local vino then a well earned sleep.

The promised snow was quite a bit less than forecast, but it has made a big difference. Went to Courmayeur yesterday and it was a bit of a powder day, lots of freshies to be had, on piste, all the snow was in good nick plus they were busy making more. Today we headed to Le Tour, we knew it would be busy so planned to go via the Valorcine lift, unfortunately it was closed due to technical problems but should be running tomorrow.
So back round to Le Tour and it was f busy, the car park was full so parked on the road. Waited half an hour to get on the gondola. The snow was generally fine although there were a few scrapped off patches, off piste was still light and even a few untracked patches. Some of the lifts and runs were closed incl the home run but it wasn't obvious why.

Les Houches surprisingly good this morning.
No crowds and in general very nice pistes.
Yes there are a few ratty corners to be avoided - Shuss Des Dammes (the far right red below col de Vosa) and the bottom of the Kandahar (the steep bit back to the Bellevue lift) .
But Aillouds (the blue to the base of the Prarion) is good to the bottom.

Ooops.
Lovely few hours up Flegere against all expectations - late start due wifi complaints (why do clients like pulling cables out of connections, especially when they're duck taped in?).
Grotty weather, grotty forecast, only went out as had arranged to meet chums.
Got from Brevent to Flegere and about to turn back but thought best at least do an Index.
1/3 way up? weather cleared, blue sky and fresh powder off side piste. Two lovely indexes (I do not think that the plural is indices) and a Floria then home for lunch and admin.
Conditions much improved. Off piste still somewhat sketchy and still a few patches with exposed rock and or stones. But getting better all the time.

Got friends in Cham now. Tomorrow, with the weather as forecast. Where would you ski? If it was snowing lots I'd normally no La Tour / Vallorcine, however not sure its covered up enough there yet?

It's an interactive lift/piste map for the various Chamonix areas but if you click to the Les Houches map it just takes you to pornography.

Just looked on the chamonix web site and it looks like some slopes are still closed due to lack of snow. Does anyone know what the conditions are like or is this common for this time of year? I'm there for the last week in February so I suppose its too early to start panicking.
|

much too early
conditions are pretty good right now, off piste is a bit sketchy but between piste and on piste is good. not as good as this time last year, but then thats not a fair benchmark to set!

Alex A, very good reports from Grands Montets this morning. TBH, Les Houches is so sparse - which would be our normal bad weather zone so you're not going to find trees anywhere. I'd go B-F to avoid the GM crowds.
