Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avoriaz / Morzine / Les Gets / Chatel - 2007/8

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm off to Chatel tomorrow evening and so am watching the forecasts with interest. The predictions for rain / sleet at the weekend have been reducing steadily and I reckon we'll get away with snow or nothing.

Conditions seem to be great and so it is only skiing in rain that would bother me at the moment - I hate those runs where the snow turns to rain halfway down, you get soaked on the first half of the chairlift and then freeze solid at the top. But the optimist in me is reading the forecasts and interpreting them as saying it'll be fine. In fact, given the snow at the moment, it'll probably be a whole lot better than fine!

Hello all, I'm currently resident in Les Gets and can confirm another 6-8 inches outside my door since last night (added to Monday night's 8 inches and Friday's big fall), so all last week's icy patches will have disappeared, I hope. I'm off out after lunch so can report more later. Now stopped snowing and skies are clearing, should be great skiing for the next couple of days. Temperature 3 degrees C. Hate to mention it, but the Chamonix weather site forecasts some rain for Friday...feel free to ask me any on the spot questions and I'll do my best to help.

snowzebra, i'm out to Les Gets for the first time next week(thursday) looking at met check and a couple of others looks like the freeze level is going upto 3100m on Saturday with temps hitting between 5 & 8 degrees for 4 days running so a bit of thaw looking likely. The snow over the past week has looked great on the webcams but will there be any snow left when i arrive or will I be travelling to the higher altitude resorts from Les Gets every day? what's the word in the village? any info gratefully received. snowHead

dlawless - there's a very, very good base. A few days of higher temperatures isn't going to make it all melt!

latest long range forecast show very minimal rain fall just 1mm before the temp is expected to drop again on Monday. Avoriaz records 210cm depth and Pre la Joux has just over 1.5m at the top. it will not all melt. the problem will be that unless more snow then falls off piste wont be very good at all and avalanches are likely to occur during the weekend, this could result in some dodgy traverses like those from Champousin over to Les Crosets where you were on grass and some people were falling under the snow where it was warping up from the ground beneath. Im sure youll have a good time!

dlawless, I was out last week and it was pretty warm with a bit of the more wet kind of precepitation and it made little impact on snow levels. Things were a little "firm" first thing in the morning but fine later in the day. With the existing base and the snow of the last 48 hours (more due tonight) it would take a lot of warm and wet weather to have any real impact.

dlawless, You'll be fine! Stop worrying! I'm out in PDS on 26th and I think eveything looks superb! You know, years ago, a quick resume on Ski Sunday and the Daily Telegraph was all you got until you arrived in resort....I don't remember having ever a bad time! Sometimes too much information can be a bad thing!

Relax, enjoy yourself and ski over to Les Gets for a world class jambon cru, reblochon and tomato panini at the "Snack Shack". While you're there have a play on the slopes at the back of Mont Chery.

Flying out from Heathrow on Thurs morning and coming back Wed afternoon after we've squeezed in a morning's skiing. Our chalet has organised our transfers and will ferry us around to lifts during the week which is nice of them. Though we are only 400m from the centre we are 800m from nearest lift.

Am very interested to hear how the rail trip goes as am always keen to avoid airports and all the hassle that comes with them rolling eyes

torico, that's the one. The burger is very good too! Flambeau has changed hands for this winter and have yet to try it out this winter. Le Pic has started doing pizzas though and I rate them. Few duff options in LG. Feel the need for some skiing and savoyard lard just thinking about it all ....

dlawless, I'd meant it as "there are very few" rather than "there are a few". If you see what I mean... Good outweighs bad by a long shot. I am a creature of habit and tend to stick to the places I know I like and all of Torico's list are ones I'd favour. Pela was always a good bet for a savoyard blow out (tartiflette, fondue, pirade etc) but I heard a rumous that that had changed hands too. Other snowHead s may be able to confirm.

rayscoops - I'm out from late Thursday night - although I'm probably skiing in Chamonix on Friday. If you ski someone on telemark skis wearing a blue helmet and green jacket then that'll be me. If the skier looks competent on telemark skis then it's not me... wink

Update from the PDS - I had one of my best ever days skiing yesterday, off piste off the back of the Coombes in Avoriaz with a guide. The clouds lifted early afternoon and it was like a film - untouched powder fields and no one around. We did two runs down and saw no one and no other tracks.

The powder was extremely deep in places where the wind hadn't scoured it away. One of my snowboarding companions managed to stack in a hollow where it was up to his waist! I have cleared another few cms from the steps this morning and the sun has just started to come out so should be a brilliant day on the slopes. And I'm having an office day.....Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh

Just come home for lunch. WOW!! best conditions I've skied in for as long as I can remember, snow like velvet, on and off piste. We were amongst the first in the Les Gets bowl this morning and the pistes were smooth as silk, the powder still light and fluffy. cardweg, hope you are having a great day over Morzine way, we are very lucky. Blue skies and sunshine and only a few people around..Mountainscape astonishingly beautiful, trees laden with snow, clear sunlight on the peaks all round us.
Last night it snowed lightly from 11pm till around 8am, so topping up every night this week. No icy patches, no rocks anywhere now so should last for some time. And reasonably cold up there.
