Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

carled, "Wigglies" is the highly highly technical and scientific term used for the description of the multi coloured lines appearing on the weather charts. I thought a snowHead of your vast experience would have encounted such a term before? Non? wink

After tonight/tomorrow's squizzle of snow/sleet/rain (depending at what level you're at) there's nary a sign of owt else until early next week and it's a bit warm then. Possible signs of significant accumudumpulations of snowiness from middle of next week onwards, with the freezing level showing hints that it may gradually drop down as we creep into March. As things stand, it'll be raining on the lower slopes from midweek onwards with the snow/rain line gradually dropping.

There are one or two scary ensemble members... sorry... target audience... I mean "wigglies", of course... that are showing signs of getting on their bikinis and slapping on the factor 50 though, so I hope they get all unexpectedly cold and goosebumpy by way of retribution.

Is It starting to look really good for the french alps the 29th onward?

My limited understanding seems to decipher that theres a a bit of dumping going on from 27th (albeit rain at lower levels) till ultimately snow down to valley on the 29th/1st/2nd march.

My only concern is the cloud cover will persist for the following week (I hate flat light)... Ho hum, time to hit the tree runs in vallandry Smile

Interesting 00z run... I think that's a rare sighting of a megaccumudumpulation of snow around the 3rd March... snowHead Obviously it'll slope off and hide now it's been spotted as dumps of this magnitude are very shy and easily spooked. Try not to stare at it and it might not think it's been seen...

In a nutshell. Very warm for a week or so but not too much wet stuff. Then just warm for a week or so with a bit (mainly drizzle with the odd localised downpour) of precipitation about. Then around the start of March there is something potentially good, even special, in the offing as the temps start to drop again. The only trouble that I can possibly see is that it looks like the weather models are unsure about which way this pattern will resolve - the proverbial knife edge. The potential meteorological fireworks are going to be caused by a nice big cold front smacking up against a huge warm area centred over eastern europe... think of a sumo wrestler who just got out of the cold plunge pool running slap bag into another sumo wrestler who just walked out of the steam room... kapow! The edge of this frontal battle will see (potentially) HUGE amounts of precipitation falling in a massive line stretching North & South across large areas of Europe and, fantastically, the whole alpine region. If the current 00z comes off there's gonna be a whole lot of fresh snow around (to pretty decently low levels) for quite a few days in early March.

For us to benefit the most, we need the frontal argument to stay in place. If it all shifts off to the east more (to be honest, that doesn't look *that* likely with the warm air mass positioned like it is) then we miss the snow, if it shoves West (not that likely as the weather systems are coming in from that direction) then we stand to get warmer air over the alpine region - still precipitation, but wetter instead of snowier.

All in all... I have to say it's currently looking rather bloody good for the MSB crowd. Although if it carries on (as seems possible that week as things stand) then it may be a bit cloudy for the week of the MSB, therefore making it splendiferous for those going out in the pre-Easter week... ahem... Very Happy snowHead Little Angel

Trust me, it makes a pleasant change for it not to be me. Although March 15th is a long way off at present and I'm sure that big warm pool of air off to the West will be more than happy enough to sachay over and plonk its fat bum over Wengen for the week I'm out there...

carled, interesting - I recall this happening last year in Verbier, bit of snow at the start, nothing much through Jan and early Feb with associated high temps, bit more around half term then a really big dump first week of March with cold temps. Then unfortunately really high temps for later March and April. Luckily the early season base is better this year and it was colder this Dec than last season so hopefully the later part of the season may be better. Optimism as ever.

Nice Sumo analogy as well Toofy Grin

If I read the GFS correctly it could be spot on to start snowing/temps lowering around the 29th Feb just as I fly out to Basel for a weekend in Engelberg Smile

I have long thought that the w/b 8 March was going to be the best of the year. About the only week no schools are on holiday, longer days, good base, good chance of fresh snow....but yes, let's not look too hard.

Pretend you don't care, whether you walk on the lines or the squares.

I'm just hoping the temperatures stay on the low side of what the GFS is forecasting - if we could get through the week with low temps instead of high then it looks like we'll get some fresh powder - if not then it's rain Sad
