I've updated the map near the top of this page (scratch that- repasted below)for 12z GFS. Delivers in a tight band for parts of Austria (Tirol) and Switzerland (SW), but a bit mean otherwise. It will change.

Interesting that all the raw weather data seems to come from German web sites.

massive rain if that comes true, so good job it probably won't

@pam w, 47:10 is the Arlberg/Ischgl area where most of the slopes are 2000m+ so if this forecast comes true it could be a lot of snow for many of the pistes.

@pam w, depends what altitude you were at.
@jbob, no it doesn't.
@Mollerski, couldn't possibly comment on whether your daughter and her friends are hot.

Out of the sun frost everywhere, still snow in our garden...

@davidof, great video! Over a month until I get skiing and we're going to Tignes so not directly relevant but I'm enjoying learning from this thread. I don't understand much but it's all interesting.

@pam w, good things *could happen*
well of course they will, but will it coordinate with everyone's Christmas holidays is something else.
Again, the annual Christmas thriller

@pam w, Could be although the difference in the sun, or not, astonishing. 4C in the sun, -2C in the shade... At least according to the car.

Depends on what you mean by 'most' of us. There are very many people with holidays booked, or apartments in high altitude locations.

Chamonix met for today said "temperature inversion toward 1400 m early in the morning" and zero isotherm at 2700m. It would probably have been a lot warmer than 4 degrees up the mountain in the sun.

@pam w, seems reasonable.
But all said, it is remarkably snowy.
We shall see Saturday what the pistes are like.

@emwmarine, some of those forecasts would see rain falling to over 2000m, I reckon. And everyone will be up your way if that's the case.

The North certainly looks Eisbedeckt, @mcspreader, absolutely perishing up there (and dark). I'll take my chances in France!

lots of snow, rolling hills to ski on, with 5 hours of daylight at Christmas... hmmm. You'll find me in the sun at 2500 meters in the Alps, dodging my way through the rocks down hill

Folks: This is going to work out for Christmas with the snow.
I got a feeling. Trust me on this. It will make you feel better.
And if I'm wrong, after you skied over a rock, you can pick it up and throw it at me, as if it were my fault.
Anyway, I wear a helmet when I ski

@duncansarmy, 7 days is a wee bit far out for a reliable forecast.
Ok, so the models today might be showing a spike, but by tomorrow it will probably have gone.

If only it were a spike. Meteo France sees FL at over 2600m for the 6 days ahead - but mercifully no precipitation. GFS very warm too. Big inversions might help with snowmaking at lower altitudes. Meteo Chamonix also has it very mild though with much uncertainty after Tuesday. Thankfully. I am ready to clutch at straws.

@notnats, the vast majority of ski resorts aren't high enough to cope with temperatures of the order being predicted. Top of Tignes might be spectacular (though a trifle crowded, especially if they don't get the funicular going ). If it stays the way it's looking (which hopefully it won't) the Portes du Soleil, the Grand Massif and much else besides will be looking very sad by Christmas.
I keep hoping someody knowledgeable is going to contradict me. Please? Anyone?
