Is it? I thought most of the half terms started on the 15th, France and most of the UK. We're half term in Scotland, but then we're often out of synch with south of the border.

snowfraise, I agree, I think it's 15th too, we are then. Last week our school was a week early which was unusual and we met a lot of Scots there that week.

Rain at the moment in Chatel - but should turn to snow during morning. Some upgrades overnight in models for precipitation amounts - so chance of a bit more than we mentioned on last nights forecast update at: http://www.chatelweb.com/snow_forecast.php
Will be a forecast update online this am.

After a fabulous day yesterday with lots of new snow and bright sunshine we woke up to rain and wind this morning - bit like the UK out there my OH said - but it looks as if it gently turning to white stuff instead of the rain now.
Looks like a lot of wind today so lift openings will be affected, looking at the websites now seem like many of them have popped up as closed although it is still early. We were on the chair up the Wall yesterday afternoon and it was practically at a standstill inching up -

Heavy sleet with wet snow mixed in at 1200m Chatel - snowing just a little bit higher up - and hopefully here very soon.

under a new name, snowing heavily now and settling in the drive and on the road - we are at 1200 - temperature has dropped to -0.8 having been about +0.6 when we got up - once when I looked out the snow was blowing horizontally.

Its fluctuating between 1100 and 1200m at the moment - it lowers in the heavier bursts of precip. it is meant to drop to about 900m - but the question mark for the lower areas is how much will fall before the snow clears this afternoon. No new snowfall yet at 1200m as its still sleety at times, but up at 1500m and above there will have been a fair bit already.
edit - got the 1200 and 1500m mixed up! - correct now

Looking out of the window is the most scientific way most of the time and its certainly more accurate than a certain well know automated snow forecasting website, which has been truly dire this season!!!
It is snowing here at 1200m - but not adding much to the cover at the moment - so my forecast for this altitude is in jeopardy!! Having said that, Wednesday afternoon was a good example of how heavy snow can quickly mount up in a short space of time - lets hope for a repeat!

Agree. If you want to know what the weather will be like tomorrow, the only sure way is to wait until tomorrow and look out of the window.
I assume the Met Office building has no windows, because they often can't even tell you what the weather was like during the day just passed.

At 1200m on the Mt Caly side of LG and it's dumping, but wet and slushy. Decided to do my shopping in Taninges this morning instead of going up in the rain, there was a lot of slush on the roads coming back coupled with people driving summer tyred vehicles who insist on stopping to put on chains around blind corners or, over the blind lip entrance to my road... And the moral of the story is, I should have gone up the mountain.

Came in early. Tonnes of powder coming down in Ardent/Lindarets, bit warm so I got soaked through very fast. Snow level seems to be bouncing up and down - heavy rain in Morzine town this morning, wet snow (not settling) when I got back at midday, now medium rain again.

Been snowing in Chatel at 1200m for last couple of hours and now settling nicely - bit of a hellish school run at lunchtime!

Yep - I know
Was doing circuits yesterday morning on the 2 chairs near to yours - short walk each time back to bottom chair etc - via some off piste near to the Torgon corner etc etc - simply wonderful cruising through the fields lower down!

Absolutely chucking it down now at 1200m with huge flakes but it feels very mild outside and the few inches that have settled on the car are sliding down the sides.
Categorically my least favourite driving conditions. Pamski, fancy picking up my kids and keeping them for the night?

It has been a rather good afternoon - if you like untracked powder on piste and a deserted ski area (where we were we saw about 8 people in 2 hours). The snow was amazing above about 1600m, but heavy and wet lower down making DJL's favourite run home quite hard work!
10cm of fresh snow at 1200m (max recorded depth) - chance of a snow showers for a time this eve.
Guesstimate for 1900m was 30cm of powder.
More snow tomorrow but with a marginal rain/snow limit for the village itself - so uncertainty again for amounts lower down

Chatel Snow, Hope there was enough depth to cover the barbed wire!
At least it is building the depth a bit on the parts of the mountain where most of the skiing takes place.

I think that's what puts people off! Deserted up there today - lifties even seemed pleased to see us!
Depths building nicely and should continue to do so over the next week.

Latest forecast from our website this morning...
Chatel Snow Forecast Update 08/02/2014: 9.35am
Update to yesterday evening's forecast... there is still some uncertainty on snow/rain limits for the first part of the snowfall that is due to arrive here this afternoon and last into the night, but it does look marginal at the resort level of 1200m for a time, especially early on in the event, with the snow/rain limit lowering this eve. Although cham meteo are suggesting 25cm to 40cm for the event (including overnight) at 1500m, the latest model runs do not show these sorts of amounts for this area with both the Euro4 and GFS raw data suggesting less than 15cm of snow equivalent precipitation at resort altitude - so with the early wetness of the fall, Chatel itself may get 10cm, with perhaps up to 20cm higher up - that is, IF these models are correct. As this cham meteo forecast is the one used by our tourist office and will be posted on their website, then all of Chatel will be expecting 25cm to 40cm !!! One important thing to note is that the Cham meteo forecast is for the Chamonix valley and the Euro 4 model is showing higher precipitation to our south in their area - so this is where the discrepancy may lie. There is still a chance that we may see the higher levels of snowfall that they are suggesting and it will be another interesting test of how accurate these models actually are. Update to this forecast this evening.

zvordauk, have a good trip - we are leaving Les Gets for four weeks early tomorrow morning - just spent a few hours on a final potter around, slightly flat light first thing on the Tulipe, there was racing going on up there so both the chair lifts were running, eventually. Did all the Les Gets runs and over to Nyon for a bit - now feel a bit sad to be leaving, but I know won't enjoy the crowds at half term, and we will be back for some more, and hopefully lots of sunshine in March.
