Well done MrsFS. Now the Stantonis can give it to the ESF in stereo!
I'm officially jealous and spending more time on here than ever. No skiing on the horizon until December though we'll be out in the summer.
That run down to Grand Paradis is one of my favourites though it's not much of a challenge (apart from dodging the prostrate bodies on that funny right hand turn) - just stand on your skis and follow the road down the valley - but it's a beautiful spot with my favourite view up to the Dents du Midi. We've never stopped at either of the restaurants but we'll have them on the list for next year. And then you get to ride on the two most comfortable chairlifts in the PDS.
Hope you have a great finale to the season.

Thanks DJL.
We were discussing how very Swiss those two chairs are - fast, efficient and comfortable.

FlyingStantoni, Well done that Mrs FS.
I am often disappointed with the Cubore bumps. i think it's a slightly funny gradient much of the way down and also suspect too many people think it's an easy route to wherever.
We got up to Cham after discovering a truly excellent Indian and Iranian restaurant last night (and thus not arising too early) to slope up to La Tour for lunch, irritated to discover that the Alpage du Balme had said at 12 of the clock, "no worries, come back at one, we don't take reservations but you'll be fine", upon arriving at 13h to hear, " no, we don't take reservations for the 2nd sitting unless you're a guide or instructor and crikey, look how many of them we have!"
Yeah, well, guess how many of our guests won't be sent in their directioninext season.
(sorry, that was way off topic. Oh well, it's late March)

Lou, white stuff very good today. Lovely to be back in Les Gets after two weeks and we were up on Mt Chery before 9 - skied over there till we had lunch at GO after 1 - scheduled to close on the 9th by the way. What I have been told is that the Ranfolly is out for the rest of the season.

Mr NN went to "the mountain we shall now speak of" this afternoon and said it was still quite lovely. We then went for a coffee down in Les Gets - whats it called, Rond something or other - forgot my glasses so couldnt really enjoy it as I was dazzled! Had a good look up close at all the jumps from the Ebouelle including the road jump - WOOOZAH!

Looks like another, sorry another... beautiful day in Les Gets this morning - just hit 0.00 and was minus overnight. Very, very quiet here. OH was at Ardent, Les Crosets, Chatel etc on Monday with friends and no queues to speak of and really good snow, I had Mt Chery to myself that day and we were in Les Gets and Morzine yesterday and at 1.30 yesterday the runs back down into the bowl at Les Gets from the top of Charniaz Express were still firm and not chopped up.

Pamski, leave some for me. I plan to be all over Mt Chery on Saturday afternoon.

andyph, all in excellent shape still - we were up from Ardent before 9 this morning, and then went over to Super Morzine and down Zore and Tetras a few times; thought we would then go down the Crot to Prodains and found a big hole there at the top by the telecabine and that part of the Crot now closed. Lots of digging etc going on there. Went up and down a bit (sorry hopeless on names) and then took the red that joins up with the Crot - it was the one that I never fancy as it has a bit of a corner... corner still not very nice but managed to avoid two people standing looking at it and the most enormous snowball. The run down at the bottom to Prodains was still very hard and in huge lumps and not easy to see as I had the sunglasses for bright sun on. Also a huge hole of digging going on at the bottom of Prodains
Blue de Lac, Arare all good, coffee at Flo's very welcome, and the glass of wine at the Ferme at Lindarets also enjoyed.
Going up in the gondola from Ardent first thing there was a piste basher going up the right hand side, and further up there was one going down the left hand side just below the goat village, luckily no-one skiing there at the time and they were going incredibly slowly. The one on the way down was well loaded up with, presumably, empty beer barrels.
Now got a bit of duck going on the grill outside - another afternoon to be wasted on the terrace in the sun.

Pamski, actually I've never bothered with Super Morzine even once, as the runs down that side are reputed to be rather dull. I know you shouldn't beleive everything you hear but with so much else to choose from... Plus I usually drive to Ardent or Prodain - no point driving to Morzine to then have a load of up and down before getting to the action. Anyway, I'll be very happy if the runs are open to Prodains as it's more fun than a downlift.
Soooooo... anyone around next week for a pootle around one day?
|
|
|
|
|

andyph, those runs were lovely first thing this morning - we rarely drive that way as Ardent much easier. Just very occasionally go all the way down B from Les Gets and across Morzine to go up Super Morzine, but probably not done it for 5 or 6 years. Usually when we have people staying and they like to try everything!!

You beat me to it. I was just going to suggest a Snowheadian meet up on Friday or Saturday next week.
Anyone up for it and any preference for day?

I'm not happy seeing all these comments!
Whilst not wanting to wish poor snow or skiing on any of the Snowheads out there it does makes me think my decision not to come out for Easter was a bad one. Bit of a worry hearing about "holes" in Crot. Presume its a stream running down there and it would not be good to fall into.
Some of those runs which are mainly used to access the higher areas (I guess Zore falls into that category) are often really good value first thing. Everyone is heading up the chair so the piste is empty and because it's low it has great snow (groomed, just softening, not cut up). We had a run down through the goat village to the Ardent bubble first thing one day on our lads trip. Brilliant! Usually we give it a go at the end of a long day in Avoriaz - slushy, busy full of chopped up snow and a real knee twister. As with most things timing is everything.

DJL, I hesitate here - but we did just wonder whether it was all something to do with that rumoured new lift from the middle of Morzine up to the top of Prodains. Probably wrong, and maybe just lots of drainage, but really quite a lot of excavation going on. Wait to be corrected now.
And Zore and Tetras were really good - still nice and hard, only a few people around just after 9 and really very few coming up to get on the chair from the Super Morzine bubble, hence we were able to go round and round a few times.

I saw zzz on the flight home on Monday and he said that Prodains is closing a couple of weeks early so that they can get the replacement lift in by the summer. On that basis it's probably something to do with that.
The new lift is planned in two stages - the first phase to replace the cable car and the second phase from Rue de Bourg (above the telephone exchange). The second phase hasn't been confirmed yet.
There are some details on the Marie website for anyone who is keen.

FlyingStantoni, Do you have a date of when Prodains is closing? Was just about to book my transfer from GVA and staying at bottom of Avoriaz so was just going to go to Prodains and get the bubble up... Might have to re-assess my plans?

You're right I do want to but we've got visitors over Easter and I've got meetings I can't duck the week after.
I could try the virtual option, go for a run on Sunday morning and weave about a bit on the downhills. Virtual long lunch is easier - there's some cheese I brought back from the lad's trip in March and Cotes du Rhone in the garage.

Lou, Bruno's is the restaurant just over the little bridge next to the bottom of the Ardent lift base. Its proper name is l'Escapade, but everyone I know calls it Bruno's.
andyph, possibly. Need to check with MrsFS (I only have certain delegated arrangement authority!).

quite right too!
Re - the snow - we had our last morning at La Grande Turche yesterday - pistes all beautifully groomed up there as usual, just us and a bunch of kids nearly all morning, the circuit closed on Sunday as Bellevaux has now closed its lifts, so we did many runs up to the top and down to the village. The run back down to the gondola base was fine all the time we were there - left about 12.30. Then went to Mt Chery from the Chery Nord side and only skied that north side which was all still in good shape, bit of lunch at the bottom by the lift and left about 3. Probably the hottest afternoon so far.

Dear Snowheads,
So FlyingStantoni, has set up a mini-bash on Sunday 8th but cries of 'oh no I won't be there then' are heard far and wide. Me too, so how about another date next week in addition? I am skiing Sunday 1st - Friday 6th inclusive and will have Mrs and 2x minis with me so it won't be hair-raising off-piste do-or-die stuff and we don't tend to be up early and out late. How about kicking off with Monday 2nd 0900 at the top of the steps of the Ardent bottom lift station for anybody who wants to meet up. I am in black clothes head to foot with a couple of Snowheads stickers on my helmet. We can then see who turns up and sort out if we want to go as a herd, split into smaller groups, select a lunch stop or whatever...

What an excellent day. 3 aging ex saisonnaires and one wife managed to actually coordinate themselves into a days skiing.
Hopes we high for some good chairlift chat, and maybe some nice spring skiing. First run back into Lindarets from Avoriaz initially un promising (too early) but then someone had a rare idea, a quick look at the "Couloir of the Rock" - from Mossettes down into Morgin and then "Short Circuit".
Splendid couloir, skiers right at top, cutting across to left about 1/3 down. Lovely spring snow, just turned.
Quick run up to Morgins top, then a lovely sunny lunch at the Buvette Sporting.
Quick scootback to Ardent, Across Linga with much fine slushiness and a few nice bumps. Essential Turns Only.
Marvellous.
