Something seems to be stirring around the 25th - too far out to get really excited about but at least something to keep an eye on instead of the flat line we've had for a while.

there's a big low building up over nova scotia way and the jet stream is about to change... does this mean we'll get a system coming in to push into the high pressure cold air and make it snow?
me, i know nothing

if what you say is true, then it's going to be warmer for our whole week away... mind you, warmer than -18ºC at night can't be bad.
and... it's weather, anything can happen!

Well on the basis of the high pressure hanging around for another week or so I've agreed to do some ski instruction for a week starting sunday. All quite nerve racking, will be my first proper instruction, I do have a canadian qualification, but never formally used it in anger. Anyhow sods law says it will snow next week and I'll be stuck do snow ploughs on blue runs.
Snow is holding up well around here, a day walking and playing onnursery slope with my son at Ramsau, 1200m, sunny, plenty of snow, got a little soft in afternoon, but freezing well overnight. Some good depth of surface hoar forming in shaded areas, quite nice to ski before it gets too deep and sugary.

Am going to La Thuile in 36 hours!
Snow-forecast.com is predicting snow showers Saturday night and Sunday. Given what everyone is saying is that likely to happen???? Should I be worried? Thanks

something i've noticed this season is that the GFS seems to always be showing it warming up towards the end of it's forecast period. as time progresses it seems to push back this warming period a bit, so if you're worried about the forecast that's based on the gfs thingie as a lot seem to be, don't despair yet. (this is only something i've noticed, and is not based on anything meteorologically based, just a trend i've seen in the wiggly lines - i'm also quite an optimist at heart )

I think we should start a Snowangel appreciation society...

only one week to go until we fly out and it looks like (though i won't start believing it until the middle of next week) we may just have some fresh white stuff to go out and play in.
Who needs GFS when we've got the moon

Ditto, shoogly, suddenly the models are showing something VERY different for the end of next week. There's even a couple of millimetres of snow forecast for Les Gets

still looking like "something" may happen 21st Feb onwards....according to GFS, hopefully it means the high pressure is sodding off!!
Any experts care to comment if other models agree?

i was talking to a freind here about the moon and aparently if its sunny on a new moon (which it was the last one) it will stay sunny all month!
lets hope we get a bit next week, we could use it. But i dont think there will be a lot and i think the next big one will come just before the next new moon.
Very much wishfull thinking, fingers and everything else crossable crossed

Sorry guys, definitely no dumps and a bit warmer in the Alps up till the end of the month (more optimistic for the Pyrenees). I'm hoping for something better beyond my horizon.

if you look at the gfs above you'll see most of the runs (lines) are close together out to the 26th - a sign that the forecast is 'relatively firm' over that period. even beyond that they're not too wildly disparate.

That high can stay right where it is, I'm enjoying the sunshine and the alternative doesn't bare thinking about looking at the 12z GFS!!

Winterhighland, too right. At least there is still good cover at all but the lowest altitudes, and cold nights to blow snow. And sunshine. Given that this is half term, these are much nicer conditions for families than blizzards and much nicer for everyone than rain!

The latest GFS run for the PDS shows the temp is dropping all the time from what the models were predicting earlier last week. Looks like we might land a week early to get any fresh snow, but the lines are getting a LOT closer together come March...

I have to agree. Just back from La Clusaz and it was fantastic. Perfect blue sky every day and fantastic conditions with very cold nights to maintain great cover. Granted the snow two weeks ago made a difference but its just perfect out there now, 99% happy customers, just a few moans from those without children!

Depends on where your asking for!! Looking like "something" may happen for the GFS I've looked at for Engelberg 25th onwards, however
1. the runs don't agree
2. temperatures look all over the shop
3. It's a long way off
4. I'm no expert - hopefully one of the experts will be along shortly....

We'll be based in Bourg St Maurice, skiing Les Arcs for the first couple of days but then heading anywhere in the area that the snow is good (within 1 hr drive, though). It's an offpiste ski holiday so good piste conditions aren't what we're after.
I won't grumble TOO much if we end up doing spring skiing on corn, but we could use some powder...
