37 days until I hit Morzine. I've spent far too many hours reading this thread and getting excited about my holiday!
Lots of snow please

Latest GFS (12z) has 1.25m of snow equiv precip for this area in next 7 days. Too early to say if it will be correct (as it often isn't) - but this run is a very very snowy run, especially for mid station upwards - perhaps the most potential packed model run of the season for PDS.

The snow rain limit will be yo yo ing about - but far too early to talk about detail - but yes it could well go quite high for a time, before falling again - as is often the case.

Which forecast is showing that?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Chatel Snow, that amount of rain was showing on Snow Forecast yesterday evening, for Thursday in total at village level in Les Gets, something like 4, 19 19 I think. That has disappeared this morning to be something like 1, 6, 5 on Thursday for rain followed by snow.
Its -8C this morning and a dusting of snow in our driveway.

Meteo France is the one to watch this week re. freezing levels imo.
As the situ is on a knife edge - small changes in the charts will mean significant changes in snow / rain limits. Expect further chopping and changing in the forecasts for the snow / rain limits through the week.
There is the chance of some huge snowfall - or a lot of rain!!! Which makes it all rather exciting!!!

Chatel Snow, hmm - looking at forecast right now for Thursday that might be the day for being a domestic goddess around the place - been here since 10th December and going back to UK at the weekend for a few weeks so some sorting out to be done.
Sun out and lovely today - much better than we had expected - great morning out on the Linga side - just that awful track to contend with on the way back down to Lindarets, managed to scoot most of the way along the right hand side and after turning the corner it was bliss to head off down the cut through, with no-one on it, to the goat village - and a bit of lunch at the Ferme.

Pamski, Those snow rain limits are changing for Thursday on every GFS run - so too soon to write the day off! Could be wet, could be snowy or could be dry from what I am looking at right now! Latest GFS (12z) has practically no precipitation for Thursday at all!!! Of course, it will be different again in 6 hours time (note if you are looking at snowforecast website - it lags a few hours behind)

sarah, the track is fine when its not covered with people. I don't know why they don't do downloading on the lift as its all set up for it and we use it in the summer sometimes - that might relieve some of the terrified faces that one sees. But I expect there is a very good reason why...
Just back from a Pilates class and someone there said that Thursday looks to be a cracking day this week so it really is all up in the air at the moment. Hope you have a great time when you are back.

Pamski, do you mean download on the Chaux Fleurie? I didn't know you could?
snowfraise, if it's what I'm thinking of there is a sign off the blue near the end saying 'Parking Ardent' and you ski off right, it bypasses Lindarets and delivers you direct to Goat Village, so it's not very 'secret'

It's a blue piste that heads off right a few hundred metres before you reach the Chaux Fleurie chair. It's well sign posted and no great secret. Meteo-Chamonix.org, my personal favourite are predicting heavy rain to 2000m on Thurs and heavy snow to below 1000m on Friday.

I've seen Chaux Fleurie downloading. That side of Lindarets catches a lot of sun and late season/bad snow years the bottom of the run is just not skiable.
More cannons now however so don't recall seeing downloads recently. And the run down isn't really so bad, just a bit narrow - if they can snow plough they can get down it.

It could end up being like that and I think we will see some rain at some stage - however - they are as only as good as the models they are looking at and GFS is all over the place and ECMWF is not even out yet this evening, and the Meteo-Cham.org forecast was updated at lunchtime - which was before this afternoon's GFS run which is now showing something completely different to their forecast!!!
As Pam says above - its still up in the air and our forecast round up will reflect that this evening - its too early to talk about specifics.

zzz, sarah, Thank you Can you get to the top of that run from the Plaine Dranse chair, or only the Rochassons?

DJL, zzz, thanks, so if you wanted to download on Chaux Fleurie you just ask the liftie? I know you can get down the blue but honestly it can be so horrifically busy and in such bad condition that at times it is one of the worst runs in the area for novices and timids IMO. I am pretty sure there is an off piste route which delivers you to just above the bubble, I think I'd fancy my chances on that more than the blue at times

snowfraise, Yes, both chairs allow access from the Chatel side if they are running.

DJL, snowfraise, which chair do you mean by the Plaine Dranse chair?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Anyone had issues with the wearing of rucksacks/ABS on chairlifts - as they have suddenly started enforcing the rule in Chatel, since 1st Feb.
This was causing some issues, as there was no signs and often the request to take them off came just as you were loading, causing some awkward moments, especially on the older chairs, that don't slow down in the station!

You know it makes sense.

sarah, Its the one that starts where the road splits from the piste on the way down to Pre La Joux. Starts near the second hairpin bend on the road down from Plaine Dranse at the bottom of the steep pitch that beginners have a nightmare on.

sarah, I'm not sure the liftie's will let you download on a whim. The download facility gets used when the piste is closed to allow the Avoriaz-Linga liaison to remain open.
If by "off piste route" you mean, there's a slope that may have snow on it that you could in principle ski down, then yes, you can just ski under the chair.
This may or may not be a good idea in any case but if you are talking about getting beginners and/or timid skiers down...? Well, it would be absolutely hilarious for evil spectators to watch from the chair but you wouldn't do it to them twice...
Meteo-Cham seem pretty confident about what they are predicting and that only the chronology is in doubt ...

DJL, I know the one you mean now, the old one, I hardly use it.
under a new name, Thanks for explaining the download. Last year we had a very timid 7 year old with us, downloading would have been a better option for her at the time.
No not under the chair, it's further over to the right(as you descend) I think and no I wouldn't take them I know because I was meeting an instructor once at the top of the bubble and he appeared from the off piste above it, I will ask him when I see him.

Hmmm, not to be recommended without knowing where you're going.

Chatel Snow, relatively rare for them to state that degree of confidence during a disturbed period.

No its not unusual for them to state this.
One thing to note is to look at the area of their forecast - its not for Chamonix but the whole of Savoie, the whole of Haute Savoie, vaud and bas Valais - that is a huge area and in situations like these - the weather up here in the N of the Haute Savoie and associated rain/snow limits is going to be very different to down in Savoie.
They may be right - but I think their confidence is mis placed in this situation - especially on a forecast issued at lunchtime, which has seen various changes in the models since then.
It will be interesting to see what happens.

Hi Guys,
Sorry I didn't post any updates when I was out. I had hoped to, but the internet in Hotel Acen Ciel was absolutely shoddy. (Just good enough to submit a tax return!!!! Ooops!!) The beer was good and the ambience great- shame about the slightly grumpy barman and the fire that blew white ash everywhere when it was windy!! Prefered it to L'isba though which had no decent beer on tap. The only beer I found that I really liked was the stuff served in the Panorama restaurant at the top of petit chatel, Cardinal I think.
The conditions initially were amazing, some lovely off piste on our first weekend, the 26th and 27th were excellent. We had a lovely time next to the black that runs back into Petit Chatel area- nice and steep and the powder was great.
Unfortunately conditions deteriorated and by the end of the week, everything was crusty, lots of rocks and brown bits all over, and lower down even groomed pistes were frankly rather scary on my rather too wide skis!! Lots of blocks of ice.
We didn't complain too much though and ended up having an amazing hotdog & fries for 7 Euro at the top of Braitaz/Conche 2000. Incidently, we loved the blue down from here, so wide and lovely! Also some of my favourite "mini" off piste practice off the top of Conche 2000.
Thanks for all the updates. I'll post some pictures when I get chance.

sarah,
Yes there is a really nice route that brings you out by the Ardent car park. It takes you through a set of cliffs with only one real option (an easy one) to get you through the rocks. It's very messy if you get it wrong! It's south west facing so has not had enough snow on it this year to be reliable.
