Thread about before kids ski trips
First time ever I've done a week long ski tip from the UK that has not been Saturday to Saturday. The issue we had is that our daughter is doing a volleyball camp on the 17th and 18th December and we wanted to avoid going new year week for a few reasons. So given Christmas Eve is on Saturday this year I wondered if it was possible to get an apartment booking off kilter from the normal Sat to Sat. So I went to gsi immobilier that we've used in the past and sure enough they had some apartments rentable Mon to Mon. Job done. 530 Euros including tourist tax.
Crossing to book next and the wife needs some new skis.

@Boarderfarce, daft question but why can't you drive back on Christmas Eve?
You staying in Les Coches itself? Which building? Been before?

I’ll be intently watching your report as I’ll be in the vicinity shortly after you.

@Layne, not a draft question. We wanted to get back early on the 24th. We usually stop overnight on the drive, didn't want to do it all on one day and heard the roads are very busy in France in the 24th.
Yes staying in les coches. We have a chalet booked up. Not stayed there before. Been to belle plagne some years ago

@sbooker, it's always nice to go to the mountains after the long Autumn and the days getting shorter. If we get some fresh snow it will be a great bonus.

Yeah, everyone trying to get home for Christmas. And in France evening of 24th is the big thing. If we were coming back we would ski until 4 and by then time we were on our way things would be quiet I'd imagine.

You will enjoy the tree skiing - especially if you have a bad weather day. And it's very handy for going either to Les Arcs or into the main areas of La Plagne. I've a soft spot for the small town centre also. Allthough Montchavin is prettier it's a little less convenient and actually quite dark at that time of year.

@abc, TR = Trip Report. Live means there are posts pre during and post the trip, rather than just post/after.

|
|
@Layne, so I gather you meant to keep the trip report “live” from now till end of year with frequent interesting updates?

Can you recommend a good ski instructor for children in les coches?
There are 4 children, two aged 10 and two aged 7. We've done gruop esf in the past which was fine but we also had private lesson for the four of them in the past which was great. 5 morning sessions ideally.

@Boarderfarce, personally I can't as I've not used any instructors in Les Coches. Sorry.

We've booked lessons with esf and booked the lift passes making use of early 10% discount. Little bit of snow on the webcams at last

Not necessary, @abc,. But it's interesting to see how a trip takes shape, from first ideas right through to coming home afterwards and reflecting on what went right, or wrong. People - even Snowheads - don't think morning, noon and night about their forthcoming trip. And it's not compulsory to read it if you find it tedious.....

Not really done much more on account of a busy work, family and social life.
I did renew our travel insurance with LV @ £175 (Premium) up from £150.
Need to book crossing and buy the missus some new skis.

No, it’s the other way around. I don’t find it tedious. I just found it not very “live”…

@always29, we have a Tesco CC and buy our diesel there because it's generally pretty cheap but we don't generally shop there. Just don't like the ambience/produce somehow.
Not counting sleeps right now as there is so much other stuff going on but certainly looking forward to it.

As ever we have had a bit of car trouble - leaky injector. Problem was the mechanic had gallstones so was out of action for a while. Finally got it sorted and then turns out a pipe or some such needs replacing. Still to be done.
Meanwhile, the home ski servicing that I've had plenty of time to do in past weeks/months remains undone. Need to find an evening with a couple of beers and the music going. Although I prefer it when it's warmer he kinda of feels more authentic when it's cold, which it will be later in the week!

Should have been a relaxing pack and departure given we are leaving on a Sunday afternoon. But it never is.

Despite the continual heavy rain wasn't too bad on the roads down to Folkestone. Indication that the food outlets in the terminal building would be closed at 8 so dipped off at M20 J9 for burgers to go.
As it happens no queues whatsoever going through the terminal and bumped up 30 minutes.

Hope to ski half day. Weather improved as the night went on. Driver swapped twice. Now at Geant in Albertville. Filled up with diesel (1.66) and now waiting for supermarket to open.

Had to stop twice, no fresh milk at first supermarket, made it smoothly into resort at 11. Unfortunately, even though agency is open and apartment available, there is no one able to give us keys.
We can't ski until 12:30 as that is went the lift pass becomes active so decamped to La Taverne du Monchu for hot chocolate and cafe au laut. Wouldn't let us sit inside. Welcome to France!!

Got out skiing at 1.
Sun trying its damndest to get out but never quite making it. Warmish for the time of the year though.
Pistes a mixture of very good, through a bit bare here and there to, in a complete of places brownish.
Went up to Mio and down one of our all time favourites Sources. Then over to and up Becoin. Made the mistake of going down the Natur piste Palsembleu. Mrs lost a ski which ran away. Discovered later quite a lot of movement on the back bindings - needs tightening up.
After that we cruised down and then back over to our home runs.
Now got the keys to the apartment, moved in and tea and pastry has been taken. Now shower, beer, dinner.

Apartment not cold but not the warmest either but thankfully they had 2 duvets so was nice and snug, and had a good nights sleep. Only trouble was prising myself out of the pit!
We are staying on the 3rd floor of La Traverse, at the back looking back into the valley and over to Mont Blanc rather than the front which looks up at the lifts and slopes. Apartment hasn't been updated much but is pleasant enough and well equipped enough. Had better but not complaining. Everything is pretty handy, that's why we have stayed here a few times. Car for pack/unpack, boulangerie, bins, ski locker, lifts, shops all a short walk away.
Anyhow, started out mid-morning and skied until last lift. Son has been under the weather the last 3/4 days and asked to be left in bed. So the 3 of us headed over to Les Arcs. Visibility good and temps again warmish but light very flat for the most part. There are some thin patches on lower slopes and some pistes are closed but generally good. We had a good motor around Les Arcs before heading back to Les Coches mid-afternoon to meet the son.

Couple of events yesterday. First off, Les Arcs seemed to have a technical issue with random lift pass gates not letting people through. Happened to 3 of us at Peissey but we saw others at that lift and at other lifts. Very occasional. We didn't have a problem after.
Second thing. If you are familiar coming off the top of Arlette from Plagne Bellecote if you go straight over direction of Les Coaches there is a long schuss with a sharpish left towards the bottom. You need to have decent speed to make it to the rope tow (or skate) up to the col where Bijolin comes up from the Les Coches side. Anyhow, we saw an Heli hovering in and when we got to the top of the schuss everyone was being held. Seemed there must have been a bad wipe out. Hope it turns out to be not too serious.
