Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Did you resist those newfangled parabolic skis too when they came out?

Are the big moutain freeridey folk less talented, do you reckon? You might be right about technique though. Look at all the skidding and scraping he's doing.

Mike Douglas and Shane McConkey

Mike practically invented the twin tip ski and McConkey perfected the fat one and how to ski on them, Tomba, Maier and Klammmer for the rest.

Personally Shane McConkey is the perfect embodiment of what skiing should be pushing yourself as hard as you can while having as much fun as possible with your friends

Extreme skiing - de bennedetti, unequivocally

The poo-poo he did and the stuff he did it on, alone, back then, is unreal

Look at the aiguille blanche de peuterey, ridiculous line then go off the cliff lookers left instead, insane

Plus his interview in steep on why he did it, particularly for a non native english speaker, is mesmerizing. I'd love to find out more about him, anyone know any books or anything?

Others, candide's style is sublime, petitt unbelievable for his age and that Henrik fella is pretty sick too. Prob Candide though.

People saying plake - plake was actually pretty rough around the edges and would have been an also ran if it wasn't for his hair. Has anyone actually watched the blizzard of aaahs? They land next to nothing!

Au contraire. I got a pair of x-screams in December of the second year they were out and I got a pair of Pocket rockets in 2003, though they were hardly parabolic but not sure you got the original point. Care to tell me what it was ?

Nickski, I think your original point was probably that ski porn makes it hard to differentiate the best of the best. I agree, to some extent its about who has the best PR. I can think of a few places where you can throw a rock and probably hit half a dozen skiers who'd be capable of stuff of the level in Abma's clip given dream AK conditions, an avy expert and guide on the crew etc etc, large heli budget. Where the pros earn their corn is being consistent, good at hitting their mark, displaying a certain style or elan etc etc. and being marketable.

If it was just a gripe about modern equipment making stuff too easy and racers being gods because that's the only objective measure then I can see why you got the response.

They were pushing it by American and British standards, but not by the standards of what was being done at the time in chamonix. baud and boivin must have been laughing at the thought of these lads been feted as extreme skiers in the states after a few descents of the poubelles and a bunch of unlanded jumps in argentiere.

I've no doubt he's spent years skiing harder stuff since, and is a generally photogenic and larger than life guy, but at the ski awards he wins the lifetime achievement or contribution to skiing award. It's laughable to suggest he's the best skier ever. There's several skiers with much better style on the average new skiing video.

Plake and Klammer for me. Boyhood heroes both. And remember that Plake did almost all of his stuff "Rippin' it up on DH boards" which is impressive in my book.

There are plenty better skiers than the two I've mentioned, plenty madder, plenty badder and also, we must not forget, plenty deader. Being at the pointy edge of things often carries the ultimate price.

I know a few people who've had, uh, "seat" issues as a result of candida. I don't believe it improved their skiing.

Great thread. A few others of worthy mention who I don't think have been featured so far :-

Tanner Hall - for bringing top level park skills into big mountain. Shame he's suffered so many injuries in recent years.
Jeremy Nobis - seems to get a lot of respect from his peers for his big mountain technical skills
Sage Cattabgriga Alosa - makes big lines and airs look totally effortless
Chris Collins - I just like his style, makes back flips look like a piece of wee wee

Oh and another vote for Seth. Super cool dude.

Racer - Franz Klammer

Extreme - Stefanno de Benedetti

Both the above are still unequelled in their field of play.

Just Best then Glen Plake. I don't know of anyone else so versitile or profesional in almost all types of skiing. He probably wouldn't get close to contending in a comp toda. BUT his skiing wouldn't look out of place in an FIS race or a ballet comp and you know his other stuff. And this at almost
50.
The most impresive thing I've seen him do is ski round linked turns in eivil death crust on skinny touring skis while guides and FWT pro's couldn't evan stand up on fat skis!
