Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

...and to the Underbar (also in Saalbach) to see the brilliant Cuckoo later tomorrow evening! The taxi fare will be worth it - besides which (if self-catering) you can eat cheerfully and cheaply by partaking of Bobby's renowned spare ribs across the road. In fact, how about this for a Wednesday evening session to make up for lost time:
4.00 - 7.00pm Hinterhagalm
7.00 - 09.30pm Bobby's Pub
09.30 - 11.30pm Underbar
11.30 - 12.00 Mango (for a night-cap)
12.00 Taxi back and in bed by 12.30am

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
We seem now to be in the grip of a warm, southerly airstream, which some might see as the onset of spring, although this can happen, with utter unpredictability, at any time of the season - for example in late December/early January this year. There's plenty of time for it to become colder again - we've often had sizeable dumps of snow in late March, and last year we had one in early April, hence the saying coined a couple of seasons ago in late March by our old friend, Erika, erstwhile chalet manager for Ski Miquel, "There's always one more dump".

At least in the short term, it looks as if the order of the day will be early starts, long, leisurely, al fresco lunches, and some consideration to the orientation of slopes in planning itineraries.

On a positive note, this is what the Saalbach website has to say about it:

"Until next Tuesday, it remains in full beautiful late winter weather. Sunny days in a mostly cloudless and deep blue sky provides the best conditions for winter sports in the mountains, and for mild thaw in the valleys. There is usually no wind and in the nights are still very cold. These few days of sun this winter, so you should use extensively since the middle of next week, we get into a convoluted Südföhnströmung. On Tuesday it lives on strong southerly winds in the mountains."

Fingers crossed that this "convoluted Südföhnströmung" will be short-lived!

Having arrived in the usual sleep-deprived, zombie-like condition, we've had a fairly typical evening in Saalbach: schnapps and beers in Hansi's, followed by a really excellent chicken curry in Bobby's (7 euros incidentally), a few beers with Powderseeker, then ran into a gang of British blokes all impressively and convincingly dressed as American comic-book superheroes (Graham Bell wasn't one of them), then ran into the Blues Brothers as we passed through the village square on the way home, and then (finally) encountered a very amiable, English guy dressed as a prisoner in a stripey costume and holding his ball and chain in his hand - he was apparently lost and wandering in the general direction of Schiliftstrasse. All he could remember about his hotel was that its name began with 'A', so we turned him around and pointed him in the direction of the Alpenhotel and the Auwirt.

Breaking ourselves in gently tomorrow by skiing down to Viehhofen with Powderseeker, who tells us that he needs a rest after skiing the whole valley today. Looking forward to a Gulaschsuppe in the Hecherhuette, and later to seeing Cuckoo in Bobby's.

As for the weather - not a cloud in sight, and can't believe how hot it was when we arrived at around midday, although, as joe1978, has commented, it became very cold later on, and we hear that the pistes are holding up very well, and are pretty well perfect between 11.00am and 1.00pm.

Chasseur, It's a weight off my shoulders! The last 3 weeks in the UK seemed like an eternity! The first observation was how incredibly warm it seems everywhere here, and yet the pistes were fine today - so it must be an illusion. Flew Easyjet from Gatwick - no problems, but what is a bit nackering is leaving home at 01.30am to get a coach from Coventry to get down to Gatwick - come back please Thomsonfly to Coventry Airport!

Just to make you hate me even more, we escorted Powderseeker, today down that lovely Viehhofen run, calling at the Hecherhuette for one of their superlative gulasch soups, also skied down from the Wildenkarkogel to the bottom of the Schoenleitenbahn without seeing another soul (!), then down to the bottom in Leogang (via the video slalom piste - yet to be watched) and that nice little black at the bottom, then to the Burglar Alarm (Bergeralm) for Happy Hour Drinks (and one of their delectable apfelstrudels), then to the Hinterhagalm for the last hour of the party (I think (Powderseeker, was well impressed!), and we now have an hour to get changed and fed before rendezvousing in Bobby's for Cuckoo's not to be missed, Monday evening live performance!

Well I got home at 11.30 pm last night after a great days skiing, and would just like to thank Mr and Mrs Tatman for their great company and superb guiding of the great area.
Obviously I really like the area as this was my fourth visit, and generally I try to sample as many different resorts as possible, but Saalbach ticks all the boxes for me so its well worth going back too again and again! (Should I really say this!! Go to France instead) wink
Thanks to Tatman's Tours I had a great time both on and off the slopes and sampled the Hinterhaglem, the Hecerhutte Goulaschesuppe and Bobby's as well as a few other places,(though was feeling a bit under the weather by the time I got to Bobby's so didnt make the end of the night).
Anyway just to let you all Know the snow held up really well despite four days of wall to wall sunshine, though judging by the warmth of the breeze that was picking up yesterday afternoon it might soon start to suffer.
I will post a trip report soon but would like to thank Tatman's Tours again for showing me this great area including parts that I had not seen before despite 3 previous visits.

jibber, Don't miss the Irish band, Cuckoo, who on the evening of Saturday 16th are booked to play an extra Paddy's Day gig to their usual Monday night in Bobby's Pub ! Last Monday they were even more brilliant than usual and received a standing ovation - well, I know most people are standing already in Bobby's, but you know what I mean. Even if they weren't playing, I would say that Bobby's is most certainly the place to be; last year we emerged from the Paddy's night party in there at 04.00am, and we're comparative lightweights!

I'm ashamed to confess that we stayed in this evening, despite the dual attraction of Bobby's ribs and Cuckoo in the Underbar. Quite honestly, although I felt like a wet lettuce earlier, I feel quite fed up about missing what might have been a very enjoyable evening. The moral of the story is don't have a "power nap" at 8.30pm.
