Poster: A snowHead

Hello peeps.
Until now, we've almost always geon with a tour op - only in north america have we gone DIY, and then we've had such a big group we've rented minivans
This year however we've rented a rather nice apartment in Arc 1800 for a week in january. We've booked flights arriving at CHambery airport. All well and good - until it comes to getting from CHambery to Arc 1800 (and back again obviously)
We'd like to hire a car that will fit 4 of us plus bags etc.
Except some of the bags will have skis in, so they might not fit in a regular car - e.g. renault scenic. So, we'll hire a roof rack - expect they don;t have roof racks for hire, only ski racks. At 19 euros per day, and they only take two pairs of skis anyway.
what do we do? Jumping up to an estate car pushes the price up dramatically, to the point where it's cheaper to get a taxi, but then we don;t have the convenience of a car so we can pop to BSM for valley prices on the shopping.
Your advice?

nbt, You may be able to get a TO xfer from Chambery, or bus - look at ALTIBUS.COM for a start. Failing that..... If the car you hire has any kind of a roof bar, you can usually bungee ski bags to those. Failing that (and looking at the cost), you may find it's cheaper for Phil to buy a new bag....
Also, your skis don't have to remain in the bag when you pack the car (bit of a PITA - but if it saves money ?)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

nbt, It'd probably be cheaper to insist that your mate Phil uses two bags!
We put our skis in a couple of inner bags (niftily sewn by Mr HH from some tarpaulin), on arrival quickly lift skis out of ski bag which rolls up quite small then skis are positioned at odd angles on top of luggage - they fit in quite nicely and there's no risk of damaging the hire car because the edges are covered. We use the inner bags all week to carry wet skis back and forth in the car....very handy!

nbt, if there are four of you in a Renault Scenic the ski bags will fit in if you fold down the centre seat. TH other bags can then go either side in the boot. We used to have a Scenic.

Is the 2m ski bag waterproof enough to be bungeed to the roof bars? We've often taken bungee cords with us to secure skis to the roof bars when we know that there won't be enough room in the ski racks.
We hired a Scenic last year for three of us. We got all our bags including four pairs of skis inside the car and didn't need to use roof bars/ski rack.
