Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

moffatross: Sorry but only just saw your post from Friday (re. your Glenshee trip) now - together with your kind offer re. pointing us to the best snow! Thanks.

We had a fairly decent day yesterday (Sun. 4.11.12) - see my trip report on this forum. However, it looks like H11LY may have found the best snow - at Nevis Range (See report on Winterhighland).

Four of us had a fun day out skinning at Glenshee yesterday for our first turns of winter 2012/13 Very Happy.

Cover was thin/rocky/grassy but we managed a few decent turns, as well as a spot of combat skiing here and there! The weather turned out glorious, with no wind and fantastic views - so a good time was had by all. We also spotted loads of mountain hares, that were just starting to turn white (for the hard winter ahead wink) - great stuff.

Here are a few pics:

mountainaddict, yeah, Helen's snow radar was fully functional wasn't it.

Nice photos though and it looks like you had a worthwhile day out and with better overhead than we had on Saturday too. We thought it was a pity that the cafe wasn't open because we fancied a bit of cake and a bacon buttie and there were so many families & passers by out of their cars, enjoying the snow that they could have made a useful penny or two.

Reckon we both made the right choice taking advantage while we could though, quite a thaw to come over the next few days.

Cairngorm quadrupling its snowguns to four this season.

Separately, a November opening for any Scottish ski resort is looking unlikely at the moment.

A promising cover of new snow overnight in the West and bands of beefy snow showers during the day today. Should be more over the weekend into early next week, though Sunday's forecast is still a bit up in the air it looks likely there should be decent snow falls at least above mid mountain level in Scotland on Sunday. Beyond snow should continue to accumulate and the 06z GFS ensembles for Aberdeen are very encouraging.

Time to start keeping a closer eye on the reports and webcams, a season start for lift served snowsports of Sat 1st December looks quite possible. Fingers crossed.

Please let it be, last winter was such a disappointment. Forecasts I've seen are all pointing to a definite cooling down during next week. Black ice in Cupar this morning anyway, that's the first time I've come across that this year. Properly frosty here.

(Not that we sell kids outdoorwear or anything!)

The Weather Outlook are also forecasting Northern Blocking, definitely a cold spell in the offing, hopefully with some more snow.

Just took the mutt for a scout around the top of the hill, looking good with about a 3" straight fall, which is beginning to crust up. Forecasts are suggesting
it staying cold with snow showers all week. More snow is required yet before we can open for skiing, but we will open as soon as we can. We are moving the guns up the hill tomorrow and hope to fire them up around the gunbarrel/zig zags as soon as we can.
Colin (Ops 1)

If it stays cold they should be able to get quite a lot of snow made made from the 4 guns they now have snowHead

That's it, looks like season start is this Saturday, latest on Facebook from Colin:

Guns are gunning....!
Ok Ok Ok . Weather permitting we will open for snowsports on Saturday. At the moment the Ciste tow will open with skiing on the Fairway. For better skiers and boarders there should be a run available back to the mid station via the Traverse, Cas and Zig Zags. This is the state of play at the moment and may change if we get more snow, and is subject to weather conditions at the weekend. We will have a better idea on Friday on what is possible. Anyone have any update on the conditions/weather for Cairngorm tomorrow? Winterhighland still showing report from yesterday. Also, on Wednesday they suggested there could be winds on Saturday?

Just trying to make the decision on whether to drive the 3 hours to introduce my 5 year old to Scottish skiing! Don't want to put him off if it is miserable! (he has skied before, 4 weeks of holidays under his belt, but not in Scotland)

Gilly28, here's a couple of pages for you to check out:

http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Cairngorm/6day/top
http://www.mwis.org.uk/eh.php?fdate=121201

The first is a computer amalgam of the various charts (mainly IIRC the GFS), the second involves humans so probably the more reliable for the next 24 hours but they're not always 100% correct. Looks like it'll be pretty cold with a fair wind chill so if you are up I'd suggest wrapping up well and doing short bursts in between hot chocolate breaks!

Hope that helps and the usual provisos apply ... as in it's Scotland so anything could happen Wink

roga, Thanks - travelling from outside Glasgow, (west). That's the worst, as you need to make the decision the night before and hope for the best. Done a lot of scottish skiing, mainly Glencoe as only 1.5 hours drive, and know how biting that wind can be, plus my son really feels the cold (wimp!), but in saying that, I really do want to get skiing in Scotland more this year, and know you just have to bite the bullet and hope for the best. Haven't skied in Scotland for the past 3/4 years (apart from a brief slot during Feb school week, which was more queuing than skiing!)

Mmm Sunday is looking better.........
