After two significant ops, both at short notice, it became clear to me that despite all the crap thrown about re dysfunctional NHS, there are at least some super hospitals and many wonderful nurses and docs....good to know.

DoubleBombardino, I think most people who've experienced it first hand don't doubt the truth of what you say but it often seems to be wrapped in a staggering wrapper of administrative incompetence.
My most recent example - my mum had pre-op appointment for fairly major surgery last week. Tuesday gets a call saying a minor infection needs to be cleared up, GP already contacted and prescription ready to pick up - all fine, nurse says plenty of time to get sorted and surgery date remains as planned. Thursday - gets copy letter from hospital to GP saying that in view of infection she's been taken off waiting list and returned to GP's care and can't be returned to waiting list for 4 months. Result 24 hrs of stress before successfully confirming the letter is just a standard administrative form letter and shouldn't have been issued. Thanks NHS.
My personal experience - great surgery. Travel length of country for post op appointment as I'd moved while I recuperated only to receive letter on morning of appt back at home saying appt cancelled. Text message or phone call rather than posting a letter 2 or 3 days ahead possible?

In terms of the post-op room and short time thereafter, for me, not having morphine or equivalent simply wasn't an option, given side effects of <any> amount of dizziness / sickness / other.
Now seven hours after the op, I seem to be OK on codeine and paracetomol.

fatbob, yep I'd have to agree that some of the core process stuff seems in need of major modernisation.
I've had it both good and bad - ie hospital texting me/calling me on mobile to keep me posted on likely surgery then calling me in at short notice (a good thing). Then a bizarre letter posted to me cc GP saying a BCC was removed, not sure on biopsy, then 3 days later another letter to both of us saying biopsy confirmed as a BCC - why 2 letters, why not just a single 1 and via email? Exeter's RDE hospital is brilliantly run but even there some of the process stuff not right yet.
But the core point remains - if the poo-poo hits the fan then the NHS generally ups its game and meets patient needs. What worries me about the NHS is not so much its current ability, but its future capacity given the drift towards longer life-expectancy and single person households.
Much more importantly, hope allanm, is fast asleep and enjoying some of what Lance clearly got a taste for

^^ Have to agree. I was cancelled twice, should have had the op Wednesday. If you are cancelled twice you get bumped to the top of the list day three, here at Royal Berks. Only life threatening ops will bump you back down.
My impression is that the staff at ground level are excellent, the service provided from ambulance to 'stable' is without reproach.
It is after that the problems start. I was cancelled yesterday as the previous op didn't finish until 3PM which was too late to start mine as theatre finishes at 6PM. I think maybe utilisation of 'equipment' may be problematic........
My leaving over the weekend or Monday will be much dependant on a physiotherapist being available. It is not inconceivable that I may not get home until Monday although should be 'fit' tomorrow evening for that reason.
Just turned down anything stronger than codeine and for the first time today saw my BP at a 'reasonable' level.

I scored a supply of co-codamol (which seem a bit better than paracetmol - they are a mix of codeine and paracetamol aren't they?), and diclofenac (anti-inflamatories I think) when my sciatic nerve blew up the other year (I think it was the old back injury playing up), aside from that not much good has come of being injured.
