Poster: A snowHead
|
Spending this year an hour north of Toulouse and am looking for a suggestion for a fun warm up trip in late March (coming off an ACL/Meniscus surgery and advised to take it easy until then). Looking for someplace with a bit of apre ski to celebrate my birthday and get in a day or two of light skiing to test the knee out before a week long trip with my daughter to the Alps in April.
I have been cleared to AT up with a very gentle ski down from the start of the season, so suggestions for any places that might be suitable for a weekend (or possibly mid-week) get away earlier in the are also appreciated.
Cheers

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Could be a bit slushy in the afternoons but I could suggest Superbagneres near Bagneres de Luchon in France (there's a bubble right out of the town) or Baqueira-Beret in Spain. Alternatively, there are many huts in the Aiguilles Tortes National Park so you could make a w/e by driving to a roadhead and skiing up and down to a hut or two. It's fairly easy going country.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Grand Tourmalet will be dead as nits on the slopes midweek, but as for the snow, it could be anything! But agree Luchon is probably a better base for apres than La Mongie and closer to Toulouse.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Superbagneres is a great bet if it still has snow (it is Luchon, as the bubble goes out of the town centre.
Piau-Engely probably has snow longest, but is further.
You'll find out where the snow is when you are there.
Luchon is a lovely town, great spa too!

MEfree30, I know the Pyrenees well, since I was coming to live in france I doing minimum one week of roadtrip every season, and also a couple of short break for longer weekends every year, the the earliest skiing I have done in the Pyrenees was in mid november in Cauterets, and the latest week I have done in Pyrenees was mid May, Pic du Midi, with 50cm fresh snow
The best choice late in season is norlmaly

thanks everyone...now to round up some Euro partners in crime.
AndAnotherThing.., do you have an address for your friends Chalet. It looks nice, but I couldn't seem to find an address I can plug into a driving directions program (the site give directions from UK, but I wanted to get an idea of driving time from Cahors). I might consider them for either my b-day, or possibly earlier in the season to just do some skinning up and easy skis down

MEfree30, A link to it's approximate location on google maps is here
Basically, aim for the A64, follow the signs for Lleida (or Lerida) exiting on the A645\N125. If you are driving through Toulouse from the North the trick is to follow the signs for Lourdes which will get you on the A64. On the French side the N125 takes you through Saint Beat & Fos. Once in Spain Turn left at Veilha and follow the valley up to the resort. It's very easy - Apparently3hr 25 from Cahors which sounds about right.
