You definately are not.
I add to my disclaimer: You should not use a gps in hand whilst skiing but one that can track your speed whilst in your pocket so that you are in full control over your skiing.

On a mountainbike? Well in excess of mach 1, with a recorded GPX file to prove it. Uphill too (well a slight incline). Don't believe the accuracy of GPS, unless it has some pretty harsh filtering to filter out individual bad points, and then you can only take it as a reasonable approximation. Not used GPS skiing yet, but may do next week.

I went through a speed check in Obertauern (I think) at about 67 km/h.
It was a very patchy run however and there was a hidden brown patch half way down that I had to improvise to avoid, my mate who came down shortly after was not so fortunate.
Ski's weren't made to be driven in a straight line

I've never knowingly gone through a speed check, but tend not to live up to my name anyway. As Nadenoodlee kindly posted, when rob@rar put up some video of me, 'Can you go that slowly and still call it skiing?', or words to that effect.

56mph on Abricotine at Les Linderets. However I dont believe the accuracy of that. Stick your hand out the car window at that speed to get a comparison

Resort: Mayrhofen
Piste: 6 @ Rastkogel
Colour: Red
Speed: 93,9 km/h
Slowing factors: Sweeping terrain
I checked the speed right after the run (GPS), so it should be reasonable correct. Also in comparison with other runs that week. I hoped to go reach a speed of 100km/h or 60 mph, but this seemed quite hard to achieve / not sensible when you are not alone on the piste.

92.54kph on a speed run at Alpe de Suisi (reading was similar on my GPS), immediately before crashing spectacularly
Run was down into a compression, where you were supposed to get a max speed at the bottom, then see how far you could glide up the other side before stopping - but after the speed gate I looked up to check my speed, which at the compression was enough to throw my weight back into a somersault.

Oh, and no way would I want to go that fast other than on a controlled speed run.

According to my bike GPS I once hit 73mph, on the flat in Fenland, says it all really.

Piste: 10 i think but it's the red under the areitbahn bubble down to the bottom
Colour: Red
speed : 47.53mph
Slowing factors : end of a long day with tired legs.
recorded 43 and 47 mph respectively over two days on the final run down each day, so if not accurate it's pretty consistent.
other info: recorded using Berryski on Blackberry storm.

I have an app for my iphone which calculates the speed my fastest to date is 58.12mph on a red in Chatel. Quite scary I don't know how the pros go 90mph! The app is called Phereshhh or something along those lines! oh yeah and make sure you were a helmet when trying

If you can see a graph of your descent then it's quite easy to check the accuracy of the measurement and whether or not it's one of these 'peaks'.

My Garmin Etrex was a poor buy. It showed 535 mph maximum. It must have switched itself on the flight. It perhaps explains why the palnes navigation went wrong and we landed at Lyon instead of Chamberry

spead freak nutjobs? Get real, many of these are on timed runs, usually fenced off from the main piste, and I'm sure those tracking speed with some sort of GPS will choose careffully when and where to do it, get out there and enjoy yourselves.
btw, it is already February.

As someone who used to write GPS algorythms for a living and built GPS hardware (many years ago when it it had few satellites), I can say that if you ignore\filter the odd spike then GPS is extremely accurate, normally to within .5 kmh. Even on a 45 degree slope to maximise the vertical component ambiguity you will be well within 1 mph of actual speed. With modern multichannel systems its even better and its rare to see spikes on units that have been built in the last couple of years with >12 channel processing. I have 6 gps units in the landrover and they are always ALL within 0.5 mph of each other
My personal best, 48 mph which I was well chuffed about untill my mate borrowed my unit and stomed past me at 65mph! Totally empty steep blue run.
How folks go that fast (especially watching 90+ on the FIS downhills) is beyond me. At 48 I was sure I was about to die and my ski's were about as steady as a wobbly thing thats on uneven ground. That coupled with your eyes watering even inside your goggles!

LOL, I am very fastidious about waxing and recently I've made a big effort to not eat pies. Meaning I am now 25KG lighter than when I hit 48. So gonna be even harder this year to get speed

Last year me and a mate both had GPS apps running on BB & iPhone respectively. Him on a board, me on skis. On one run he clocked 100kph. I was beside him the whole way down and I clocked 60kph. Go figure.

The GPS's in mobile phones are not leading edge units, they lack the ability to concurrently process multiple channels. The small aerials prohibit strong signals and the built in software doesnt smooth and filter well. So doesnt suprise me. They are really designed to provide your location appoxamately to apps so they can sell you stuff
Try a proper Unit designed for navigation

169kph on my iPhone SkiTracks app a couple of weeks ago in Kappl, which clearly was wrong - I reckon I must have been doing 190kph at least
On the other days I remebered to use it, the max speed was around 77kph, which is more accurate.

Or a bit of fun?
They are usually fenced off to prevent people skiing on to the main slope and potentially crashing into someone.
I haven't done it since I was about 15, but I do think they are fun, kind of like a roller coaster
