Earthquake - or rather a tremor - this morning at 0804hrs, with the epicentre near Modane in the Savoie (45°38 north, 6°82 east). Only 3.5 on the Richter scale though...

Hey, don't knock 3.5. If it was a shallow earthquake that would mean it was widely felt. I experienced a 3.5 quake in Sicily (it was very shallow - actually above sea level) and knocked me off my feet, although I have to confess I was quite precariously balanced at the time.
Wonder how unlucky you would be if you were caught in an earthquake-induced avalanche?

Does anyone know if there was an earth tremor in Manchester on Thursday. I was in Tesco at the time and items on the shelves were shaking. It seemed v similar to those ones we had a couple of years ago. No one else seemed to notice...

stanton, an aftershock which is stronger than the original ? The site gives the one on 5th as only 2.5
beanie1, It's odd how some people seem to be much more sensitive than others. In an office birthday bash in Cairo, one guy suddenly looked very odd and hurriedly sat down. I though he was having a heart attack. Then some of the girls started screaming. I can't say I noticed any motion but the light fittings started swinging a bit. Missed that bad one in Kobe by exactly one week. I had travelled on the elevated highway that collapsed. Missed a bad one in Cairo by one day. Had a couple of minor aftershocks from that but only noticeable (to me) by the hotel chandeliers swinging. Lived in Tehran for more than 3 years and never even a tremor. Stick with me if you are nervous of 'quakes.

Nothing near Manchester. There was a very small quake in Caenarfon Bay, but you won't have felt that in Manchester.

Surely if you adopt correct posture at all times with ze knees bent and ze weight central, then you are less likely to notice a minor quake?

I was in Los Angeles Airport in March 1995 waiting for my flight home.
Thought i 'd go to the bathrooms before going to the gate. I only just sat down on the pan & the wholw airport jolted. It was the big aftershock from the 1994 quake. Quite a moving experience in more ways than one

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

You know it makes sense.

Peoples perception of earthquakes can be very different e.g. Quite often the earth moves for me but Mrs Frosty claims she feels nothing at all.

PG, thanks for telling me that - I was puzzled that the room seemed to shake for no reason, and had put it down to a bad hangover! Never experienced an earthquake before.

Nothing too unusual - was walking across a very steep and loose lava flow on Mt Etna with a heavy rucksack carrying a survey tripod on my shoulders. Was trying to step up a bit of a bank when the ground shook, fell over backwards, much blood everywhere (walking on new lava is like walking on broken glass), extended laughter from my so-called friend!

Here in California earthquakes are part of our daily lives. To see what I mean, take a look at the link below. I don't even bother getting under the desk any more...
Off to Mammoth Mountain tomorrow for three days, where they still have a 15 foot base of snow.

SteveG, it's not quite like that. At the office, those in cubicles 'prairie dog' it, ie stick up their heads and look at the other cube people, while those in offices usually either come out, or say something appropriate, like 'Hey, did you feel that'. And then all is back to normal. Usually.
And Mammoth Mountain gets more than its fair share of earthquakes. As it turns out, the skiing is done on a volcano, and it's not totally dormant. See my link above and scroll to the right to see which earthquakes are in Mammoth Lakes area.
